Jersey Patches Allowed Next Season

its all tied in. Its becoming difficult to support your team without supporting their sponsors. Thats why you stock up on the old school jerseys now and build your collection before another level of capitalism hits the nba and the owners.

I refuse to aid the cause of any organisation who wants to give money to the maloofs, not until im certain they will redirect those funds into the team and community.

If you need a reason to grab that old school richmond, hurley, williams, webber, bib, jax, jersey you can add this to the list.

Hell ill be getting my cousins and evans jerseys before patches are added

oh then if hes talking about soccer, what the hell do you mean nobody takes notice. the jerseys look completely ridiculous.
I am talking about soccer, and nobody here takes notice. Nor does it look ridiculous. It's just part of the game, and does far more good for clubs than bad. Talk about having a hissy fit over nothing. Nobody looks at someone wearing a soccer jersey and looks at the sponsor, thinking "Oh, I need to check them out." Nobody cares. Presumably it will/should be the same in the US.

No offense, but we're talking about US basketball, not European soccer. I don't think you can presume anything about potential similarities in fan reactions, especially if you look at the riots, violence, etc. that seem to be part and parcel of a lot of soccer fans nowadays.

While sponsor logos may look perfectly alright to you, I find them not only distracting but feel like it cheapens the sport. Just my two cents, but I think it helps illustrate the differences in perspective.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand - sponsor logos on US basketball jerseys - I still think the projected figures are way out of line UNLESS there are already plans to broaden the field. What's next? Selling naming rights not only to your arena but to your team itself? The idea of the Check Into Cash Sacramento Kings, for example, just doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. And, because of the whole Power Balance Pavilion fiasco, I have no faith that the Maloofs wouldn't sell the rights on a yearly basis. The only benefit there would be in trying to collect all the various jerseys from each year's name sponsor.

Blech...

i couldnt even tell you who the sponser on my football teams shirt is in all honesty... all i know is you get money for the team and it really makes no difference to the jersey and nobody cares over here

Again, I think it boils down to a difference in perspective. Some things are just not going to be the same here as they are in the UK/Europe. Want another example? Your fascination with the "game" cricket. (My theory is that cricket is the world's longest-running practical joke.) :)

NASCAR might be a shocker. Each driver has a sponsor and is instructed to use the sponsor's name when interviewed. There are smaller patches all over the cars. A driver caught on camera drinking a Coke makes an extra $5000. The gas used is one brand. The tires are one brand. The only thing that isn't used as a revenue source is tattoos. Every other word mentioned on TV seems to be a sponsor's name. It's something you get used to.

Last I heard our team was in financial trouble. Any revenue source will help us.

i agree i think it looks cheesy as hell. the other guy says people dont notice and arent bothered by it with soccer, but then again, soccer is terrible. so if your willing to sit through an entire soccer game then your tastes are obviously different from the average US sports fan.

Just moved to Seattle about a year ago.

For the longest time I thought our soccer team was the "X-box 360s". That's what it says right across the front of the jerseys, and on a tiny itty bitty wittle shoulder patch it says "Sounders" (the actual team name).

I think its lame, but hey....As long as the NBA doesnt go all Nascar with it, whatever. Sign of the times.

Also, agree with Reke 13 Havoc...Soccer is boring as hell.

Maybe they assume if you are at the game you know the name of the team. :) That IS odd, I must say. I'm going to look for a picture of the team.

It better be worth a lot of money.

soccer/football and basketball are ranked the 1st and 2nd most popular/followed sports in the world.

Theres no need to turn this into a which sport its greater debate.

What is clear though is the divide been the rest of the world and US sports. We're behind so to speak in terms of revenue making ability here but its going to take getting used to which is why we'll start with small 2x2 patches and grow from there. From a basketball perspective we'd be the last league to add sponsors. Checking out the Panathinaikos euro basketball jersey they have sponsors across the front of the jersey under the player number.

Yeah, you obviously don't know me very well. ;)

There are many similarities between various countries but there also a lot of differences. Personally, I like the idea of differences. Makes it pretty boring if everywhere you go is just the same as the place you just left. All I'm saying - and not backing away from - is that I dislike the idea of advertising on team jerseys to the point that I will never purchase a jersey that has advertising on it.

That's disgusting. The only way I'd accept something like that is if they were giving away an X-box with every jersey purchase. :p

ya your just helping my point now, overseas basketball jerseys look ridiculous. what are the 3 biggest sports in the US? id say its clearly Football (real football not futbol), baseball, and basketball. none of them have ads on the jerseys. and its gonna look terrible if any of them start doing it. the jerseys just look so nice and clean with just a team/city name and number. i really think it will take away from the NBA,MLB,NFL,NHL, if they start with this. like i said before, i dont care if its even just a ad the size of a penny, i will NEVER buy another NBA jersey if they do this

Yep well your going to have to come to grips with this.

Considering the business backgrounds and profit maximisation interests of owners and leagues, im suprised that this never came into play earlier.

Clearly a step behind.

"real" football would then be the sport that is predominantly played with your hands, while the guys that are actually allowed to kick it get ridiculed constantly, yes?

I'm pretty confident in saying that despite the hideous color schemes they use up there, the Xbox sponsor actually sells Seattle kits and is far more valuable to the team in driving new fans than it is in ad revenue.

Of course most MLS kit sponsors are MLM schemes and other junk. In Portland we get Alaska Airlines which actually puts us in the top 2-3 imho. Beats Herbalife, Advocare and Amway. In Europe half the teams are sponsored by online gambling companies. So that's more likely what we'll get.

I don't mind though.

We root for a team that is broke and whine about a way to increase income? Are you kidding? Look around. Everything is paid for in this country from proper product placement in movies to ads on TV (why don't we complain about three minutes between scenes?), above mentioned $5000 on camera drinks of Coke, etc. Advertising is all around us. A little patch may lead to more but so also will it add to our tolerance. I think we are arguing about personal tastes and in some ways, it is unarguable. My taste means as much to me as your taste might not. If the ad doesn't interfere with my ability to watch the game, so what? There is more good done than bad.

MY objection is that the haves will come out further ahead than the have nots so I hope the revenue sharing takes all this extra league income into account so we can benefit from LA's ads.

What a silly little argument.

I don't think it's whining and I don't think it's silly. If you don't have a problem with the ads, that's your choice. If some of us do have problems with them, shouldn't we also be able to voice that choice?

Fire away. It's my opinion it's silly. Never said people couldn't argue it. It's your choice to see it that way. Nothing new about that.

Well, things could be worse. I mean, we have some hating the Sea kits, yet their fans pack the stadium to the tune of about 38K per game, which would be about 7th in the Premier League, which is nothing to sneeze at at all. If also flies in the face of whoever said Americans don't like soccer. Here's an interesting stat. MLS averaged more fans per game than either the NBA or NHL last year. So, one could argue MLS is MORE popular, despite soccer being a boring game(lol, baseball isn't?), and is even MORE POPULAR than NBA basketball is in Sac. But i'm sure it's just that the Kings are incredibly popular, yet the same economy which prevents fans from attending games in Sac fills the staduim for a worse sport in Sea. Say what you want, but almost 2.5 as many fans show up for soccer games in Sea than they do for NBA games in Sac.

We can barely ever sellout and get 17,317 unless it's LA or Mia showing up, yet the horrible sport with horrible jerseys gets more fans at the gate. I'd love to have the problem. People are also being insincere about a 2 by 2 patch by acting like it would suddenly turn into a 6 by 6 patch replacing "Kings" on the front of the jersey. Also not sure why some wouldn't want this IF it helped in making the Maloofs case for leaving even tougher, with yet another new line of revenue on top of revenue sharing. Just my opinion.
