Interest in Chuck Hayes?

I would be pumped to get chuck hayes! The guy is one of the best post defenders in the NBA. He's nothing flashy, but he always seems to do the dirty work and get the job done. he would be the perfect 3rd big as long as his contract is also nothing flashy.

He is awesome at post defense. Would be great to have as a 3rd big and bring him in to guard teams with a post threat that's killing us.

As a replacement for Dalembert?! Hell no!

As a heady veteran, the glue guy that provides leadership and will give you 100% every time he steps on the court?! Hell yes!

Chuck Hayes' name got brought up pre-lockout as someone who you would add to the current rotation to provide depth, leadership and stability. But if we are talking as a replacement for Dally then it makes no sense.

If we re-sign Dalembert, I am not sure there would be any minutes left if the front court unless of course we ship out JT or less likely Hickson.

I am not opposed to the idea provided the context in which we are getting Hayes is right. It would need to be in addition to Dalembert or Chandler and NOT as a replacement.

Why?

We need Daly or a replacement. That guy is paired with Cousins. We have Hickson, who will surprise some fans. He was a damn good pick up for us. Then we have JT, who I like off the bench. I think he'll have a very good year. THEN, we have Whitside, a 5th big, who I'd love to see get 10-15mins a game, and that will be tough to get as is. Where does Hayes fit in? Do we really need him? What for? Don't see it. I pass. Hope this is BS.

If we re-sign Dally or get his replacement (Chandler/Jordan) there will be a log jam in the frontcourt. We had similar problem last year until we traded away Landry. Then all of a sudden Dally was back to his best and JT started playing basketball that he is known for. I think we are in similar situation again with Dally - Cousins - Hickson - JT and with Westphal's wacky rotations we could be in trouble by the time he finishes experimenting.

However, what we clearly lacked last year was leadership and we certainly have not addressed this so far in the off-season. If anything we have gone backwards in that regard by trading away Beno. As a result, our off-season is not just about filling the roster spots and accumulating talent. We carefully need address the leadership void and this is where I think our interest in Hayes comes in. I also wouldn't be surprised if we show interest in Battier and the likes. We are in desperate need of leadership and not just talent.

If we signed Hayes and Dalembert I'd be down with trading JT for a first round pick. Next year's draft is deep.

Chuck Hayes would be a good bench vet NOT a starter.

If we get Hayes and not sign a Dalembert/Chandler, then Westy may have decided that Cousins stick to being a C. But if that will be the case, they better get a solid PF next to Cousin, not named David West.

Just to add to my previous comment. If we do have interest in Hayes I doubt he would be the solution to the front court. Remember that we need to spend some $16-17 million just to make the minimum salary.

It might also suggest that we might have a trade lined up that would send out JT and we would get Hayes as a big man replacement that brings leadership and defence despite being severely undersized as a C

Chuck Hayes is obviously the solution to nothing. People point to his defense, but most of them kind of ignore the Rockets compelte defensive collapse once you replaced a 7'5" center witha 6'6" one. Now what Chuck Hayes COULD be useful as is a good defense/hard worker/roleplayer veteran. The sort of guy you bring in to be "big" man #5 not so much for his ability on the court, as for his effect on the lockerroom and on team culture. We need vets who value defense aroudn ehre if we're ever going to instill that in the kids and get better on that end. A guy like Hayes could be part of that solution. Not the solution itself, but the sort of does it the right way vet you wuld like to fill out your roster with.

Problemis that he's gotten so used to playing big minutes over the years for the Rockets, I doubt he would agree to come on here as a 5th big. We've just got too much size and talent up front to be a logical option for him.

First thing I thought of.

Get used to the agents exploiting the Kings cap situation to get the bidding interest active for their clients. Petrie may have contacted agents about a great number of players. This one just happened to find it's way into a story.

This doesn't surprise me at all. The question is whether Hayes is seen as replacing Dalembert or simply replacing Darnell. Further, how does Hickson fit in? Does management seem content let Dalembert walk and treat Hickson as the major addition, moving forward with something like Cousins-Hickson-Thompson-Hayes-Whiteside?

I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I could see them thinking that. The next question is... where do you spend all the $$ to meet the floor?

This could very well be true too. The nromal agents' throw every team's name in a hat and make a list to try to create leverage for their client. Given our size/depth up front its actually maybe even more likely than not in this case.

1. Cousins
2. Thompson
3. Hickson
4. Whiteside
5. Hayes

Hmmm! I think he would be the 5th big! Excuse me! Little big!

I'm not going to pay too much attention just because someone threw his name out there. I agree that it sounds like agent talk to me. Now if they want to hire him as a future big man coach, thats fine. He certainly knows how to get the most from the least.

It is agent speak. Agents have a clear job. They use reporters to get the name of every team that’s shown any interest in their player in an attempt to incite a bidding war. With the reputable agents, you rarely see them just make up a team. They will over state it, for example, intense and mild interest is reported equally as “having talks.” But if the list is short, instead of upsetting a GM by alienating a fan base with false talks, most good agents will say “several teams including” A, B, and C, instead of just making up D and E.

I’m sure for the right price, they would add Chuck Hayes because he’s a good post defender. And thus, I’m not shocked they’ve contacted his agent. And because it’s the way business is done, Chuck’s agent put the Kings right out there.

For everybody holding out hope for Nene and Chandler, their agents are floating out the names of the teams that have contacted them and the Kings aren’t among them. I suppose it’s possible that the agent decided to list some of the names, and omitted the Kings, but that’s not consistent with how they typically do their job. I guess the Kings might try to jump in late, but with 10 days of free agency, that seems odd.

Instead, it appears the Kings are taking the approach of signing or matching an offer for Thornton and picking up some pieces. Hopefully, it’s more, but you would think they would at least bid on the top center free agents. Maybe they will clean up on the mid-tier guys with good value contracts. But right now, it doesn’t appear that we are bidding for Chandler or Nene.

PS – I read about some people trying to front load the first year of Gasol contract. That would work with a bonus, it hard to load up 2012 because the number is going to be cut by 20% - because there are 20% less games. It wouldn’t be a problem for Thornton, because you could just raise his offer by 20% to offset that. But with Gasol, Nene, or Chandler, you are going to bump up against the max.

I like it. I like him at the 4 more than the 5 though. I've really liked his defense on guys like Amare and KG.

I don't think having a log jam will be as much of a problem this year as in past years. With the shortened season and a lot of back-to-back games, I think we will see a lot of teams with bigger rotations than usual.

The Sacramento Kings have emerged as a frontrunner to sign Rockets free-agent forward Chuck Hayes(notes), league sources said. Sacramento had wanted to sign Hayes to a lucrative one-year deal to keep cap space for the summer of 2012, but could come back with the kind of multiyear offer now needed to acquire him. For Hayes, a native of nearby Modesto in Northern California, it would be a unique chance to return home.

From Woj's latest article ... we are the frontrunner? really? ugh. I like the strategy ( big one year deal to open space for next season ) but I hate using it with Hayes.

If we sign Hayes I believe we can say goodbye to Jason Thompson. Petrie will try and trade him while his value is high.

I would be more worried about saying goodbye to Samuel Dalembert! If we sign Dalembert and then Hayes, I would not be against saying goodbye to JT because with Dally, Cousins, Hickson and Hayes, there would be no minutes for him anyway.

Like I said, I am a heck of a more worried that this means we are losing Dalembert. Replacing Dalembert with Hayes is just.....
