Free Agency Thread - 2018

Why are we not chasing Capela? He does everything we wished WCS could do. Worst case scenario is we force Houston to match and detonate their cap for the next 4 years.

We’re going to end up trading for Wiggins aren’t we?

Why do you want Nurkic?
The Blazers went from a bad defensive team to a solid one in a short period of time which coincided with his arrival. Young, still has upside. Good advanced stats. No injury issues. Regardless of position I consider him a qualitatively better player than the other FAs are injury issues, like Parker, bench players like Smart etc. Him and Capela.

As for the Kings big men it’s “flotsam” which can be interchanged aside Bagley/Giles and maybe Skal. Any which haven’t proven to be quality starters soon IMO. Bagley/Giles duo struggling in SL to positively impact.

Etc

I would've easily offered Nurkic 15mpy. He's a very good and underrated player. The Kings seem to be heavily sold on Bagley, Giles, and WCS. If we didn't draft Bagley, I could see us heavily targeting Gordon and Parker.

How on earth is Tyler on that list?
Poison pill contract. I forgot which team, but he signed a contract with another team, and Miami matched. They got hit with the poison pill provision which owed him something like 5million/yr for year 1 and 2, but he gets a gigantic jump to 20million/yr for year 3 and 4.

I wonder if Vlade’s pride won’t allow him to bring in a FA over some of his prized earlier decisions

He lost almost entire season in Denver because of injury.

I don't disagree that he has some upside, but his fit might be worse than Lavine or Parker. If we were to sign Nurkic than you take away minutes from two of your potentially best players and minimize WCS value (trade or otherwise). The young with upside players are most likely the ones who also have had injury issue (Lavine and or Parker). That all being said I am for going after Capela :) I think he would fit perfectly with Fox and Bogdan.

That's not what the poison pill is referring too. Its when the cap number for the outgoing team is different than the incoming.

91. What is the Poison Pill Provision?

"Poison Pill" isn't a defined term in the CBA, but there are a couple situations that are commonly referred to as a poison pill -- meaning a contract clause that creates a potential difficulty because the cap accounting can vary from the norm.

The first is when a team extends a first round draft pick's rookie scale contract (see question number 58) and then trades the player between the date the extension is signed and the date it takes effect. When this happens, the player's trade value for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the rookie scale contract and each year of the extension. The sending team uses the player's actual salary when calculating their total outgoing salary, and uses the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary.
It makes it harder to trade the player because someone needs to have cap space.

Would there be any deal we could do to trade for both Simmons (who we should have signed last year and many of us pleaded for) and Vucevic from the Magic?

Aside from maybe bringing in both Smart/Hood I can't see anyone else out there for us

What young free agent left has the most star potential? Parker?
He's a slightly rich mans version of LaVine as far as advanced metrics go. Same story. Career year had meh metrics. ACL tear. Not as good after ACL tear. Not much room to improve from his career year. Not quite as bad a defender but still not good on that end at all.

Marcus Smart would be a much better option despite his shooting. He's a winning player.

I'd be fine with smart and hood if we could get them both for $18.
With Smart reportedly considering signing the QO for $6M, there might be a chance (??) to get both in under $18M. Still, he'd probably need a pretty decent raise from what Boston is offering to come to a losing team with a young starting PG installed, so maybe there's not enough room left there...if we give him $10M+ to induce a signing, I don't know if what's left could lure Hood. Now, if we stretched Z-Bo...

I still consider Vlade a bit unqualified and on his last legs, and I don’t want him to make decisions that will continue to linger with the remaining cap. I wasn’t sold on the theory behind LaVine, and the contract, and I don’t trust Vlade beyond wanting someone with that type of hype (“PlayStation”), not to disrespect the wisdom of those who did want him. From Vlade’s FA endeavors from Achilles Matthews, to Hill etc and I disagreed with LaVine, I just hope he doesn’t leave us with some last bad decisions

Congratulations. You've done it. I'm now completely speechless.

Thank you. And because I think you doubt the veracity of those comments, on RealGM General forum they have open threads on the 5 worst GMs and the Lavine sign/match. I think that’s in line with general NBA fan sentiment

At the very least it shows players we're willing to spend big? Idk, at this point I would have invested in an elite scouting team for the draft and solely focus on picks and udfas and use my farm team to find gems

If people were mad that Bagley wasnt put in a position to succeed in summer league, wait till you see him playing with a complete non shooting center against Nba defenses.

Bagleys game atm seems to be getting the ball in the move near the basket and finnishing once he has slight edge on his defender. If you want to utilize that correctly, you cant have a non shooting big man clogging the lane in the dunker spot. Bagley needs to be the player in the dunker spot.

If you want to make things easy for Bagley (and have an efficent offense), you need to have him setting screens to Fox with three shooters surrounding and either attack the switch or get the ball against traditional pick n roll coverage when he has leverage over his defender. Also running pick n pops with Fox&Giles while Bagley at the dunker spot trying to force Bagleys defender to help.

Bagley atm doesnt seem to be a guy you just throw the ball to and let him beat his man, force defence to help and create your whole offense around that. Having to operate with non shooting bigs and no room under the basket is just putting him in a bad position. To me it should be a no brainer to use him as the center on offense with a floor stretching 4. But again if you look how Joeger refused to change his system to support Fox's strengths, I'm a little afraid he will be mostly playing with KK and Willy while making things very hard for both him and Fox.

all small market teams are forced to do this. and if they aren't their gonna figure it out the hard way. building thru player development is the easiest path to success.

Capela is not gettable he doesnt make sense. He'd completely destroy their leverage in finding a nice deal for WCS, they'd get some crap return like what Kanter netted Utah...
