Free Agency Thread - 2018

There is a downside to this FA, in that it could be another “Kings FA” where they get nothing we want done.. depressing to think about
 
Sacramento should not overpay for guys like Hezonja, guys who haven’t proven anything. There are a few guys who they can go bigger on and a few guys who they can go small on. The other aspect is that if they just sit tight, one of these teams is going to go looking for a team with cap room and we will end up with a guy and pick there.

If they come away with nothing, then that’s better than overpaying which is what many of the earlysigning FA’s are doing.
 
for Kings it is really hard to bring FA, especially now when they can not offer them nothing else except money.. at the moment there are really no players that you should overpay, so just absorb contracts and wait once you have a chance to get good FA that will fit your team, and than it is ok to go even a bit crazy.

wait 2019 to try to get SF, or even 2020.. there is no rush, these youngsters still need time to grow..
 
I'm still intrigued with Hezonja. He went from one of the Magic's worst players to an above average player for their team last year. Not that being above average on the Magic means a whole lot but he did it with a pretty low 3PT% and at least he showed a big sign of improvement last year. His FT% has been good over his career so he has all the makings of a good shooter. If he can bump that up to 37%, he would basically be about average for a SF. Put it this way, Fox was worse this last year than Hezonja was the year before and if Fox makes the same step this year that Hezonja made, I'll be ecstatic. Fox last year and Hezonja the year before were about as bad as players get in the NBA so it's promising when a player can pull themselves that far out of the red. There could be something there with this kid.

Remember the Kings don't have a pick next year and teams trading picks for cap space is pretty rare these days. The teams that might be willing to trade their picks are going to be teams like the Rockets where their picks are so low that they don't hold enough value to justify the cap space. They're going to have to get a SF in some manner or another or else you're relying on JJ and other guys playing out of position to fill the spot.
 
What is on herzonja 's table is a portion of the 8.6 mid level for ONE Year

Herzonja does want more - More $, more yrs, more minutes

We can give him that , 3 yrs 7 mil , with 3rd yr team option, more starting min this coming yr at least

That is not overpaying him

I would be happy with Hezonja for team friendly contract but I would have to be sure that Nuggets arent giving out 1st round pick, they seem to be going over the tax and their pick could be decent. Also I'm not sure Hezonja would accept a deal like 3/21. Might just want to bet on himself and get a one year mid level and re-enter the market 2019.

If only we did something different last offseason so we could offer Hezonja 2+1 AND wait out to get Denvers '19 first by taking a couple of bad contracts from them..
 
Problem is this team has to go up against the triple whammy of market, reputation and state tax, which could mean 25-30% on even mediocre FAs

With that said, if we can’t get the big names or a good package for our space, I would be ok overpaying for a Mediocre rather than stark nothing (getting minimal assets for space). I just hope it doesn’t come to that

Nothing is boring and I can’t put hopes in it

When the mid level exemption is 8.5. Anything around that isn’t an overpay for a backup or starting SF.

This says that NY is offering part of the MLE on a one year deal for Hezonja. I think that's pretty easy for the Kings to beat if they really want him. It's possible that the Knicks aren't the only competition though. At this point it seems that if he doesn't end up here its because the Kings didn't want him that bad. I still like Sactown's idea of Elfrid Payton and Hezonja as our FA haul. Hezonja adds potential/competition to the SF position and Payton does the same with Mason III, which are our weakest spots IMO.
 
Some might not agree, but another reason the Kings might not bend over to sign a SF, aside from the possible Buddy/Bogdan starting which I advocate, but they may still have an appreciation for what Jackson can do

I mean, he has a good length/athleticism/motor/BBIQ for the position IMO. He needs to fill out body wise, and gain a lot more confidence in what he’s doing. They see him working at the facility in the off-season.

IMO it’s not a stretch to say he ‘could’ become as good or better than a Hezonja

That could just be a possibility (not arguing the likelihood). Napear won’t like that

I know we're all focused on the small forward position. But truth be told, if I dismissed all concerns of feasibility, the guy I would want is Aaron Gordon. Redundancy be damned. Hezonja is like a bag of stale chips compared to Gordon. I'd clear the decks, offer him a max contract for four years, and see if Orlando matches. They probably will, but I'd still rather give it a shot. Gordon can defend the 3, 4 and 5. He's a great competitor. His potential has barely been tapped. He's tough, can run like the wind, finish, get rebounds, fit in with virtually any team you put out on the floor because he is so versatile, and his shot is getting better and better. And unlike LaVine, he's injury free. You say: "But he's not a small forward!" And I say he is a 3, 4 and sometimes 5 because he can defend the 3,4, and sometimes 5. He's a small forward-power forward-sometimes center. That's his position. I just made it up. Play him with Bagley, Giles, Fox and Bogs and you can call him a rose by any other name for all I care. That's a lineup that would be freeking tremendous.

They said that an NBA scout called him a tease because he slows flashes on the court and then disappears.

Wish our beat writers were as good as that nypost writer who actually puts in relevant information from scouts. Jones and Ham's articles almost never have any kind of information in them that we don't already know.

You'd have one shooter, one mediocre shooter and three bad shooters starting together. There would be no room for the big men to operate and you'd be hearing "clank, clank, clank" from the outside all game long.

Yeah like we are going to sign someone in 19 when lots of teams have money. The time to do something is now.

Being a Kings fan is hard.

Hayes did show well rebounding/defense/understanding plays vise. he shot extremely poorly but i'm giving benefit of the doubt with the butterflies first games etc... we will see how he does in summer league
