Wayman Tisdale, the legendary Oklahoma Sooner who this year was elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame, died Friday morning. He was 44.
His passing was confirmed by the University of Oklahoma.
The three-time All-American at Oklahoma, who lost his right leg to bone cancer, had been fighting the disease since 2007. The cancer was discovered when doctors were repairing his leg, which he broke after falling down stairs in his home.
It was determined, then, that the the best course of treatment was to amputate Tisdale's leg, just above the knee.
Tisdale was a collegiate star at Oklahoma, where he averaged 25.6 points and 10.1 rebounds during his three-year career.
He played 12 seasons in the NBA, averaging 15.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in 840 games. His best season came in 1989-90 with Sacramento, where he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds.

http://www.kingsfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=627368#post627368Tisdale was one of my favorite Kings. I know there are a lot of other long-time Kings fans who remember him and I hope some of you will share your memories. He was a class act and one of the good guys.

My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family. A fitting tribute to him would be the mournful wail of a baritone sax. He will be missed.

I met him when I was 12 years old just outside the Kings locker room. Nicest player I met. I'll never forget the Tizzy Flip.

He's one of the most incredible incredible people I ever came in contact with. He was one of my favorite players of all time...so sad. I had the pleasure of interviewing him about 9 years ago and was so gracious in doing so...what a thrill, interviewing one of my childhood heroes. I also have a few of his albums, including the first one which was a motivational song for children back when he was first traded to the Kings. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children and the rest of his family during their incredible loss.:( The world has lost a beautiful human being...this hurts me.

One of my best King's memories was the Wayman Tisdale All-Star game... he will always be part of the Kings and my love of the game in my mind. Sad, sad day.

This makes me sad.

Being a kings fan, a fan of jazz music, and a musician, this makes me want to cry. And I rarely feel like crying. :(

RIP. Wayman, hopefully they got a guitar waiting for you in heaven.

I would hope that the Maloofs and the Kings organization would propose wearing a small #23 on our jerseys next season in tribute. My heart hurts right now with this incredibly sad news...he touched so many people, including myself, during his 44 years on this Earth. Peace be your journey as you leave us Wayman...

I was a young Kings fan (maybe 7-8 years old) when Wayman came to the Kings. I have very fond memories of the man, and this is very sad news. I will always remember the Chrstmas time commercials on Channel 31 (when they used to show the games) where Tis would be sitting and say "Tis the Season."

Rest in Peace Tis.

One of my favorite players ever on the Kings. He had this class about him even when they were the worse and they were when her played. There are some players that are Kings for life and along side Mitch Richmond there's Wayman. Hopefully they'll do something for him at Arco this upcoming season.

They definitely should do something for him.

RIP Wayman

Was a bright spot in an otherwise dark Kings era. Great guy. Awesome with the community. It is sad to see him go so young.

U gotta have something on the bottom if U want to have a band
Gotta have a strong foundation if U gonna make a stand
The bass is center solid as a rock
When your body starts moving U know U just can't stop
It's played with the soul not just with the hands
By the best bass players in the land
When the bass starts thumpin' sho 'nuff hits the spot
And I hope it never stops

This is very sad news. No one should die so young, but he certainly filled his life with wonderful deeds and acomplishements. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, who will miss him the most of all.

I really wonder what happened? It was only 8 short months ago doctors were telling him he was cancer free...and now this. It's just another sobering moment that tells you how fragile life can be, and how incredibly quick things can change...I cried earlier when I heard this news, and I almost never cry. This man had such a profound impact on people's lives, he smile lit up the darkest of rooms. I can still hear our former great public address announcer Fred Anderson calling his name after he made a shot: 'basket by Waymaaaaaaan Tiiiiiisdaaale!'.

My first ever out of town trip as an intern was a Kings game April 13, 1991. I was 18 years old. I wore a suit with a red and blue tie, the same colors as the Kings. I walked right past Wayman Tisdale. He looked at me with that huge smile, and said, "That's a nice looking tie!" I smiled back and said, "It's a Kings tie." He laughed and walked away.
He didn't have to say anything to me. He could have walked right past me. But that wasn't Wayman Tisdale. He made me feel completely comfortable in what was a foreign situation for me; a teenager working at an NBA game for a TV station. Wayman made me feel like I belonged.
I have that media credential in a frame in my office and always think of him when I see it. What an awesome human being. I hope the Kings put a commemorative patch on their jerseys this season in honor of him.

Wayman holds a special place in my life as a Kings fan. He was the guy that I would be in the backyard playing basketball as an 11 year old as I would try and imitate the "tizzy flip." Just a great personality and a bright light through some dark years in Kings history. RIP Wayman. See you on the other side. Much love.

That sucks.. My mom was treating him when he was first diagnosed. She said he was a really nice guy..

This really sucks :(
