Dream Team Draft - rankings due Sunday night

I was actually thinking Oak, but I wanted someone with a bit more offense, so I went with Zo.

Well I pretty much had a "strictly offense" pick with Gervin (even though he was underrated as a defender), so to balance out my lineup I figured I'd go with a "strictly defense" pick with Oakley. Felt my other 3 had both O and D, so I feel my lineup is balanced. Doesn't hurt that the guy was money from mid-range either:)

Okay, I got the PM, so I am just going to go ahead -- dimedropper still has a pick somewhere back there though?

Anyway:

Arvydas_Sabonis.jpg

Arvydas Sabonis

A great wildcard in this draft -- there are people, major people, who think that Sabas was right up there with the greatest centers to ever play the game. To this day arguably the greatest European player of all time, and right there with Vlade and Walton as the best passing big man to ever lace them up. At a massive 7'3" 290lbs he could also step all the way out to the three point line, and was equally adept at working the post with hook shots and drop steps, where you simply could not double him without instantly being beaten by the pass. His destruction of our collegians, including The Admiral, in the late 80s is largely credited with inspiring us to create the Dream Team format for our international teams. By the time he made it to America he was a living legend overseas, but his legs were completely shot from a series of knee, ankle, and achilles injuries. Even so, hobbling around at age 33 he was still good for 16 and 10 in a little more than 30min a night, and you put him out on the court today, young and healthy, my money is on him being more dominant than any of the current crop of centers. The ultimate compliment though came from his competitors -- guys who had to face him like Pippen, Robinson, Elliot all call him one of the greatest of all time, and these guys had to face Ewing, Dream, Shaq etc. etc.

I like this video better than any of the youtube ones, for the hilarious subtitling as much as anything (well, that and seeing Sabas clock some dude) -- boys and girls, don't subtitle in a language that's not your own (although that doesn't explain Sabas somehow being drafted in 1886): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5b403_arvydas-sabonis-simply-the-best_sport

That's one hell of a front line you've got there Brick. Passing, shooting, rebounding, and length. I still think they lack the athleticism of some other front lines though (besides Rodman, who lacks the offense), but they do have good BBall IQ:).

Man, my internet was messed up for a few days and already up to round 5? ill get the picks i missed up here in a few minutes but damn, what a disadvantage

Jespher, huge thanks for helping with the clock and PMs and making the confusing double clock not *AS* confusing.
:)

And since it's starting to look like everyone's monsters have been mostly taken I am looking forward to seeing what kind of glue guys are taken to make the superstars gel together.

Picks like Oakley, Rodman, Vlade, and Deke were genius picks seeing as a lot of people probably had them pegged as mid/late round glue guys and wouldnt give them a look early.
Im hoping that makes people (including myself) start with some more glue as this is a TEAM thing.

Another commish note---

If you want the position of any of your draftee's changed on the draft list, let me know and I will change it up for you.
You can play your team players out of position, where you want them to be.

Well I needed to anchor my team, made it perfect, make it tough, intimidating, mean, give it attitude..

4-time NBA All Star
5-time All-NBA Team
6-time All NBA Defensive Team
1X NBA Champion

  • 2-time NBA regular-season leader, rebounds per game: 2002 (13.0), 2003 (15.4)
  • NBA regular-season leader, blocks per game: 2002 (3.5)
  • 2-time NBA regular-season leader, total rebounds: 2001 (1052), 2003 (1026)
  • NBA regular-season leader, total defensive rebounds: 2001 (749)
  • 2-time NBA regular-season leader, total offensive rebounds: 2003 (293), 2006 (301)
  • NBA regular-season leader, total blocks: 2002 (278)

On August 3, 2000, he was traded along with Chucky Atkins to the Detroit Pistons for Grant Hill, in what was at the time considered a one-sided trade; Hill had planned to sign with Orlando as an unrestricted free agent, but the sign and trade deal allowed Hill to receive a slightly more lucrative contract while Detroit received at least some compensation for losing its marquee player. Since the trade, he has won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2001-02, 2002-03, 2004-05, and 2005-06 seasons, and was selected to six All-Defensive teams. In the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons, he led the league in both rebounds and blocked shots, the first to do so since Hakeem Olajuwon. In 2003, he was voted by fans to the first of his four NBA All-Star Game appearances as a center for the Eastern Conference.

Oh Yeah? His Best Season..

Sweet picture of Ben Wallace. My pick...

Bernard King

show_image.php

Had Bernard King's career not been shortened by injuries, he would be up there with the greatest ever. He is known as one of the league's best scorers and had great length to be able to defend. He did not only play in a playoff game with the flu and both of his middle fingers dislocated, but he scored 44 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

At 6'7" and 205 pounds, Bernard King epitomized the NBA small forward of the 1980s. Long arms and a quick release, King was explosive runner on the fast-break, King was known as a tremendous scorer, leading the NBA in scoring in 1985 with 33 points per game. He was twice selected to the All-NBA First Team and four times to the NBA All-Star Game. Who was this guy scoring against? King was scoring against some of the best defenders ever, probably in the best defensive era.

He won an NBA scoring crown in 1984-85, had back-to-back 50 point performances and then later in his career made an inspirational comeback from a career-threatening knee injury to re-establish himself as one of the game's top scorers. Before Michael Jordan arrived, King was the definition of the unstoppable one-man show on what was a mediocre team.

Recorded eight games of scoring 50 or more points.

4x NBA All-Star (1982, 1984, 1985, 1991)
1978 NBA All-Rookie First Team
2x All-NBA First Team (1984, 1985)
1x All-NBA Second Team (1982)
1x All-NBA Third Team (1991)
1984 Sporting News NBA MVP

**** my perfect six man. I was going to have him back up
Kobe and Cheeks or have him start at SG and move Kobe to SF in certain circumstances.

So, after losing Rodman I'm gonna go with a similar player who might be a big reach at this point, but I need a roleplayer who does the dirty work. Good defender, good jumpshooter, good rebounder, good passer. But most importantly, tough as they come and annoying to play against. I'm going with

Oakdish.jpg

Charles Oakley

Short list of honors, but still gonna be a valuable piece to my team.

NBA All-defensive 1st team (1994)
NBA All-defensive 2nd team (1998)
1 time All-star (1994)
1986 All-rookie team

Career averages of 9.7ppg, 9.5rpg and 2.5apg, but these are affected by his last few years in the league where he bounced around a lot and wasn't nearly as effective.

Had 35 rebounds against the Cavaliers in 1988

My 8th pick suprised he was picked this early.

Wow, the time difference really killed me. Some of my guys have been taken. Oh well, I guess thats the point of the two pick rule, otherwise i would have slowed it way down. Anyway, my pick:

ppete.jpg

"Pistol" Pete Maravich

Over a 3 year collegiate career, Maravich averaged a ridiculous 44.2 PPG, and is the leading scorer in NCAA history. What makes this even more amazing is that there was no 3 point line at the time, and Maravich wasn't allowed to play his freshman year.

Here's a quote which shows just how unbelievable he was:
Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots he took. The coach calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot (5.8 m), 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, which would have given the player a career average of 57 points per game

I'm not sure whether he will start for me at SG or be my combo guard off the bench, bringing both scoring and passing. I've yet to decide.

Here are some of his achievements:

-NBA All-Rookie Team
-All-NBA First Team (1976, 1978)
-All-NBA Second Team (1973, 1978)
-Five-time NBA All-Star (1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1979)
-Scored 15,948 points (24.2 ppg) in 658 games
-Top 16 scoring average NBA history (24.2)
-Led the NBA in scoring (31.1 ppg) in 1977
-Scored a career-high 68 points against the New York Knicks on Feb. 25, 1977
-Shares NBA single-game record for most free throws made in one quarter (14) on Nov. 28, 1973 against Buffalo
-NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team (1996)
-#7 jersey retired by the New Orleans Hornets (2002), even though he never played for them -- one of only four players to have a number retired by a team they did not play for.

Pistol changed the game. He was Magic before there was Magic. He pulled off stuff most NBA players can only dream of doing. He was way ahead of his time. I have absolutely no idea how he's gone undrafted this long, but this was a no-brainer for me.

Yeah, this was another I was waiting to see how far he would drop.....good choice.

Thanks, Maravich is a guy that could have gone in the 1st/2nd round. Just too good value to pass up.

Who's on the clock? I PM'ed vikinginferno, not sure who else is meant to be up. It'd be great if the pace could pick up again. This is a really fun draft.

Well I'm almost glade you went with McHale Brickie. Do we get to count his exploits as GM as well? :p

As for my pick

drexler13.jpg

Clyde "The Glide" Drexler

Lets take a review of the Mr. Drexler's career. Only averaged 20 7 and 7 for his career. Voted of the 50 greatest players and was on that cute little team the US put together for the 92 Olympics.

Led his team to the finals 3 times, finally breaking through in 1995 as a 6 seed while with the Rockets. Had a little help from a friend there (See: The Dream).

Long, athletic, slasher. Decent shooter later in his career. His athleticism with Barkley and Shaq inside should work nicely.

bdouble has my vote already...Clyde is my favorite basketball player of all time. As an outside observer, the picks have been pretty solid so far...but no way Clyde should have dropped this far.

You're right, my mistake. Sorry, don't know how I missed that :o

LoungeLizard was online a while ago if I'm not mistaken, if I'd known he was up I would have PM'ed him. Sackings, I've already PM'ed tradepeja.

Come on, man! You can't give your vote to someone just because they picked your favourite player, that defeats the whole purpose of the game :p

If it's any consolation, before Drexler was picked, I was stuck between picking him or Mutumbo. I went with Mutumbo because he's one of the best defensive bigs ever and I wanted to have that anchor, but I was seriously considering The Dream. I even said at the time that there was another guy who'd slipped and shouldn't slip for much longer. That guy was Drexler, and he was picked a few spots later if I'm not mistaken.

With my 5th pick I select...

Bob_Pettit_Auto_Photo3_mid.jpg

Bob Pettit - PF

Bob's the guy who revolutionized the PF position to what it was before Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan revolutionized it to what it is today. Pettit was the first player to ever score 20,000 points in a career, he was selected to the All-Star and All-NBA team in every single season he played, got the All-Star MVP in four of those years (the most ever), and even led the Hawks to the 1958 NBA championship over the heavily favored Celtics with Bill Russell.

He is still third in career rebound averages (below Wilt and Bill) at 16.2 per game and is one of only two players to average more than 20 ppg in every single season he played in. He'll round out my team perfectly. Here's some more nifty stats.

  • 1954-55 NBA Rookie of the Year
  • 4× NBA All-Star MVP
  • 2× NBA MVP
  • NBA 25th Anniversary Team
  • NBA 35th Anniversary Team
  • NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
  • 10× All-NBA First Team Selection
  • 1× All-NBA Second Team Selection
  • 11× NBA All-Star
  • 2× NBA Scoring Champion
  • Jersey (#9) retired by the Atlanta Hawk
