Dream Team Draft - rankings due Sunday night

Scott Skiles and Jeff Van Gundy are both legal picks as an assistant coach for 2 reasons. They were both an actual NBA assistant coach, qualifying them automatically. Also, SLAB didn't specify in the rules that your assistant coach had to be a historical NBA assistant coach, but just had to have coached in the NBA (Coach K didn't count...).

Well if that is the case the you could probably pick any head coach in the NBA as a asisstant coach because almost everyone start off as assistant coach. Not fair and against the spirit of these drafts I say.

I think you're jumping to a conclusion not supported by how SLAB has set this up. If he wanted to restrict the coach requirements further, I'm sure he would have done so. Posting an objection during the last round of the draft is shutting the barn door after the horses have escaped, run cross country, found new herds to join and lived to ripe old ages...

I did not bring up earlier because he didnot happen untill the last round. If it happen earlier I would have objected for sure.

We'd already had Red Holzman, Jack Ramsey, and PJ Carlesimo taken in earlier rounds as assistants, and I'm pretty sure the last gig of all of those guys was as a head coach.

Ok I missed PJ as asisstant coach I am bad. But how did Jack and Red even be considered asisstant coach when they never coached in the NBA as one. It proves my point even further. Those two should never been accepted as picks.
 
The rules never made any statement about the "assistants" here being real assistants, anymore than the backup PFs for these teams were actual backups (except for my team -- tried to put mostly reserves on my bench). There's really a Dream Teamy thing to this whole draft (hence) the name. And those Dream Teams always have multiple head coach types too.

Well I wish I known that from beggining because I would have chosen different and even Bill Fitch was never an asisstant coach so that is atleast 5 illegal picks to that I count so far.

They would only be "illegal" if they were agianst the rules. Which they are not.

And Tex is a pretty famous pick.
 
OK, I have my star players and character guys. I now need someone who will not pout at a lack of minutes, and who will know his role when his name is called.

I also needed a shooter. I'm taking:

Jason Kapono

This guy is here to do one thing and one thing only; hit alot of 3s when he's in the game. If I need someone to spread the floor, he's my guy.

He has been a bench player all his career and so he there won't be any problems regarding minutes. Kapono had his best season in 06/07 when he put up 11ppg, 3rpg, 1.2apg. He shot a blistering 51% from three point land. The following season he shot 48% from three. He's a deadly shooter.

He's lead the NBA twice in 3 point %, and he is number one of all-time in 3 point FG % at 45%.

In the 2006-07 season, he led the league in three-point percentage with .514, which is close to the all time single season three-point percentage record held by Steve Kerr (.524), and is the fourth best percentage in league season history. Kapono also won the 2007 All-Star Weekend three-point shoot-out competition by defeating Dirk Nowitzki and Gilbert Arenas in the final round with a score of 24 points which tied Mark Price's record for most points in a final round of the 3-point contest.
Kapono repeated the feat in 2008, having led the league in three-point percentage going into the All-Star weekend. In the final round of the contest, he scored 25 points, tying the all-time single round record set in 1986. He also ended the 2007–08 season as the top three-point shooter in the league.
On November 25, 2007, Kapono became the most accurate 3-point shooter in NBA history. On this date he made his 250th three-point shot, qualifying him for the NBA record in 3-point shooting accuracy. He immediately moved into first place with a .461 ratio of 3-point shots made to shots attempted, moving ahead of Steve Kerr, who had the previous lifetime best at 0.454. He is the leader among only 27 players in NBA history to have a shooting accuracy of 0.400 or greater.

There are some really good players that are still on the board that people may have forgotten about. Since I've picked all my players, I'd be happy to PM people with them if you're having difficulty thinking of who might fit your team. Kapono was by no means the best player left, but he fits my team the best at this point.

A.C. Green

My goal with the final pick was to get someone who could play C/F, but also set an example for the rest of my team. Green accomplishes both of these goals and much much more. He was a great chemistry guy and never backed down in the face of adversity.

Green holds the record for most consecutive games played. Green's consecutive games played streak began on November 19, 1986, and ended on April 18, 2001.

His streak of consecutive games played almost ended when J. R. Reid of New York intentionally elbowed him to the face. Green lost two teeth to the incident but still able to continue on with his streak by wearing a protective mask and only playing a couple of minutes a game for a few weeks.

Green suffered from chronic hiccups throughout his entire career, the hiccups only stopping when Green was running or working out. Reportedly, Green never slept more than two hours a night due to the condition.

He led the league in games played 8 times.

He only missed 3 games his entire NBA career.

Showtime
With the Lakers, Green fit well into the Los Angeles flow, as he did not need to have plays run for him in order to be effective. He led the Lakers in rebounding for six of his eight years on the team.

Accurate
Green finished fourth in the league in field goal percentage in 1992–93 at .537.

Community Work
Green is also involved in the community. Something every team and city needs. Currently, he runs youth camps through his A. C. Green Youth Foundation.

I don't see any reason for us to have to do them in any particular order so, unless SLAB objects, I'd suggest letting you post them whenever you finish them, pending the actual team rankings and then - the playoffs of all time!!!

You know, I might even vote against myself for this pick, because I actually hate this player, but in my mind, I think I might have the most frustrating bench perimeter to play against after I get this guy.

Yeah he's a thug and he is annoying, BUT he hasn't really had a history of messing up the locker room atmosphere, especially in recent history (spat with Byron aside). He can fill it up off the bench, pissing off EVERY opposing player and fan in his wake.

Between Gilbert, Eddie, and JR, I might have the most obnoxious 3 pt shooters to play against. ever. No player has ever made a bigger deal about hitting their third 3 ptr in a row in the middle of the second quarter than these guys, and I feel JR just contributes to that. It would also be really cool to see what Hawk and JR can do in the open court.

Since I came to the draft late, I was already at a distinct disadvantage. I had three picks to make up and the idea of finding players to meld with Karl Malone and Isiah Thomas was a daunting task, to say the least. So rather than try and build a list that would most likely be impossible to assemble anyway, I decided to go in another direction.

My team represents, for the most part, character and class. While you see some names that are familiar, you see others you may never have heard of - or didn't know much about.

From Assistant Coach Lester Harrison, who started the Rochester Royal franchise with his brother, to Adrian "Odie" Smith, who played as backup to the great Oscar Robertson and was part of the 1960 Olympic gold medal winning team, these gentlemen had an impact on the game.

At the end, I filled in two positions with players who, if they hadn't been playing against us, I might have liked to see in Kings uniforms simply because they killed us on a regular basis.

My coach is THE coach, the man for whom when head coach is mentioned, his name is the one they're compared to - especially if you're talking about life records, accomplishments, etc.

I would love to see each of these players take the court. They all loved the game with a passion you just don't see as much now. I have no idea how many games they'd win but I know one thing - you would see heart and hustle, energy and excitement from the minute they took the court until the moment the final buzzer sounded.

I wish now I had thought to take Wayman Tisdale. In his memory, and as a tribute to the player and person he was, my team is named the Tizzy Flippers.

Write-up:

Every team starts with the coach. Larry is one of the best. And the most under-rated thing about my coaches are that they are brothers and have actually worked together in the past and have been successful.

I feel my team is balanced both offensively and defensively. I also feel my team can play and win any game the other teams want to play. Coach Brown could put an all offensive line out there, or an all defensive team. He could go big, utilizing the versatility of some players, or he can go small. He can run and gun with Kidd at the point, or set up a halfcourt offense and beat you that way. He can pound it inside to Kareem and Amare, or he can attack from the perimeter with great slashers and long-range, clutch shooters.

What I like is that my team has several players who don't need to score to be effective, like Kidd and Johnson. Kidd for example, has never been a great scorer but is virtually a lock for the Hall of Fame at some point. They'll both control the tempo, find the open guy, and play great defense, but still being a THREAT to score. Then there's guys like Oakley, Ratliff, Bowen and Andersen. They know their role, and it's mostly on the OTHER end of the court. Rebounding, shot-blocking, defense, and just plain ENERGY.

So that's 6 guys, half my roster, who don't even need to score (but can) to be effective. Scoring won't be a problem with Gervin, Pierce, Redd and Turkoglu on the wing positions, and Kareem and Amare down in the post. And even some of those guys don't need to score to be effective either
