Draft position thread

We're just in the middle of a particularly tough stretch. Not that there's any easy wins for this team, but games against Cleveland and Boston on the road are games most teams expect to lose. They'll probably win another 10 or so games by the end of the season, good enough for somewhere in the top 5. Oklahoma City, on the other hand, seems to have turned a corner of sorts. They're playing very good basketball lately and I wouldn't be surprised if they actually play themselves out of the top 5 by season's end.

New rankings, with the Clippers losing to Portland tonight already figured in, even though that game hasn't started yet. We're one Washington woss out of 1st.

1. Was 9-35 .205
2./3. Sac/OKC 10-35 .222
4. LAC 10-34 .227
5. Mem 11-32 .256
6. GSW 14-31 .311
7. Min 16-27 .372

OKC won again. Kings are now tied for worst record in the West. Half game behind Wash for worst in the league. Looks like a top 3 pick!

What happens when end the season with the second worst record in the league and we go into the lotter only to walk away with the 6-10 pick......what would we do...

Luckily that's not mathematically possible. If we have the second worst record the highest pick we could walk away with would be #5, which itself is almost mathematically impossible. More likely: 1-4.

It happened to the Celtics last year, as well as the Grizzlies. They were 1 & 2, and ended up picking 4 & 5 and missed out on Oden and Durant. Karma for tanking the season.

Anyway, I know the odds are against that happening. But it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

Definitely can happen.. If we had the worst record we couldn't pick lower than #4. If we had the 2nd worst record the 5th pick is the worst, and so on.

There is no plausible explanation to argue for a better win record in terms of draft position, no matter what has happened in the past. Karma for tanking? Well were not taking, we just suck.

In addition, these drafts are independent probabilities amongst themselves. You always want the 1st. Statistically speaking, if the 1st place never got 1st pick, you would still want first every single time afterwards.

I know, I was referring to the 06/07 Grizzlies and Celtics. They tanked big time.

And I agree with the rest of your post

The lottery is what it is. When you're picking in the 10-14 range like we have been lately, it doesn't much matter. When you're looking at picking anywhere from 1 to 6 it is a big deal. When the day comes, either we'll get lucky or we won't. But this team right now is bad enough to finish with the worst record and if that means a guaranteed #4 pick or higher, I'll take whatever we can get. I'm a lot more concerned about who Petrie picks than whatever happens in the lottery. We'll be in a good position to draft a potential star player this year. There's no Lebron out there anyway, so it's much more important that you do your homework and make the right pick.

Now it's official.

The linningest team in the West!

New rankings, pretty much as predicted:
1. Was 9-35 .205
2. Sac 10-36 .217
3. OKC 10-35 .222
4. LAC 10-34 .227
5. Mem 11-32 .256*
6. GSW 14-31 .311

* Until Denver finishes whumping Memphis, at which point they'll be 11-33 and .250

Pretty soon to be League, and Washington holds a victory over us as well.

It's quite possible that we make it to #1 nationally, but there are some games that have to go the right way for us to get there and hang onto it. Here are the key matchups through Feb. 6th:

Jan 28: Memphis @ OKC: I'm rooting for Memphis, since OKC has turned a corner and is not too bad now. But I probably won't get my wish.
Jan 31: LAC@Washington: This game could put us into #1, but, if so, LAC will be brutal competition. Might be better for the Clips to win this one. It will be a back to back for both teams, so I recommend you don't watch it unless you're cheered by seeing other teams play as badly as the Kings.
Feb 1: OKC @ Sac: This is a "must lin" game.
Feb 2: Memphis @ Washington: This may well be important, depending on how the games on the 28th and 31st went.
Feb 4: NJN @ Washington: The Nets have been stinking lately, you never know. GO WIZARDS!
Feb 6: LAC @ Memphis: Another one that may be crucial, based on the results of the 28th, 31st and 2nd.

Not a lot of change tonight, lots of lottery teams linning, but they couldn't all lin, since OKC was playing Memphis. As expected, Memphis let me down. New rankings:

1. Was 9-36 .200
2. Sac 10-37 .213
3. LAC 10-35 .222 ---> assuming they finish losing the game now underway
4. OKC 11-35 .239
5. Mem 11-34 .244
6+: can't possibly catch us.

I see it as a 4-team race from here on out: Wasington, Sac, LAC and Memphis. Minnesota and Indiana stopped sucking and became mediocre, OKC is on their way up, and even GSW are on a different level from us. The pingpong balls will bounce as they may, but I'm feeling sure that we'll have a top-4 position before that happens. The only question is whether we can hang on to top-2.

GSW beat New Orleans in New Orleans tonight, so no need to fear that the Warriors will catch up with us, they're on a whole different level.

Rankings:

1. Was9-37 .197
2. Sac 10-38 .208
3. LAC 10-36 .217
4. OKC 11-36 .234
5. Mem 11-34 .244
6. GSW 15-32 .319
7. Min 16-29 .356
8. Tor 19-29 .396
Rest of the league: completely out of range (.400+)

Forecast: Washington plays the Clippers tomorrow, and Memphis on the 2nd. A lin for us (over OKC) on Sunday will probably put us into #1. :o A woss would put us into a near-tie for 4th, I don't even want to think about that.

Well...technically we did the same thing. ;)

The competition down here at the bottom is really quite brutal. We're on pace to win 17 games and there are 4 other teams stubbornly refusing to give an inch and slink away. Have we ever had 5 sub-20 win teams in the same season before? Not even like Oden is sitting there and people are tanking for him. This is just pure suck. The Clippers and Washington in particular have no excuse with all the veteran talent they have on their rosters (although Washington may have to sue Areans for breach of contract to ever get him to play basketball again -- he's fat and happy in retirement living off of somebody else's money).

Washington was down to only 8 players because of injurys. While we are totally healthy, so I can cut Washington some slack.

Baron and Camby are back in uniform for the Clippers. They didn't start last night but both played 20mins+. Hopefully they'll get back in to game shape soon.

And, until then, Washington is beating the Clippers by 10 points, with 6 minutes left to play. You know what that means, Kings fans?

We are #1!!!
The linningest team in the NBA!!!

I'm little worried because if kings win tomorrow, then Kings, OKC, and Memphis will be tied with 11 wins each. I hope OKC win tomorrow and put Kings at the top again!

#1 sure didn't last long. If OKC lins tomorrow, we're tied for 4th, whoopeee!

1./2. Was/LAC 10-37 .213
3. Sac 11-38 .224
4. OKC 11-37 .229
5. Mem 11-35 .239
6. and beyond - not pathetic enough to be relevant

you mean tied for 3rd? its the same thing, but my way makes it sound better ;)

47 wins will get you into the #8 playoff spot in the West. That means if we go 36-0... oh, wait, there are only 32 games left in the season...

March 15, mark your calendars: this is the only game left in this season where we play an EC team (Washington) whose season record isn't more than 10 percentage points ahead of us. If we don't wose that one, we will have a perfect linning record against EC teams for the year.

Update, not because much has changed, but just because there's a temporary pause in the thrashings. The sub-.300 contenders:

1./2. Was/LAC 10-38 .208
3. Sac 11-39 .220
4. OKC 11-37 .229
5. Mem 12-35 .255

Think good thoughts for Washington tomorrow, and the Clippers on the 6th. With our woss vs OKC, its up to those two teams to save us from the possibility of a franchise-worst season combined with a #6 draft pick.

Bad night for us, lots of teams (Was, LAC, OKC) were linning, but not ours. The only bright spot was that Memphis wost. GSW are up vs Phoenix in the first quarter, but there's a lot of time left for them to lin.

1./2. Was/LAC 10-39 .204
3. Sac 11-39 .220
4. OKC 11-38 .224
5. Mem 13-35 .271
6. GSW 15-34 .306 (If they lin vs Phx tonight, 15-35 and .300, otherwise 16-34 and .320)
Everyone else: >.350

Am glad to see Memphis wosting though. They were scaring me with the massive linning streak they put together. Hard enough just to outduel Washington and the Clippers (will Arenas and the whole Clippers team PLEASE just get their asses back on court? That's cheating -- we are losing fair and square with our entire roster, and the teams below us are countering by placing their entire starting lineups on IR).

Agreed.

We have an exciting day coming up tomorrow... some of it isn't good news...

Portland will whip OKC
Denver will smear Washington

BUT, LAC is visiting Memphis, and they can't both lin. That game just might put Memphis out of the running, in the short term. 14 wins is a long way from 10-11 when there are only 2-3 wins happening per month.

The only thing that worries me is that we're also playing Utah tomorrow, and Utah hasn't been so hot on the road lately... 8-16 for the season, just as we're 8-16 at home for the season. They are totally being carried by home cooking this year. Out of the 7 road games Utah has had since the start of the calendar year, they lost 6 of them (LAL, OKC, Dallas, Houston, Denver and Portland), the only one they managed to win was against Memphis. Now, we may well be the next Memphis, but we could also be the next OKC. I'm a little worried by this one, as a woss now would leave Washington and LAC very hard to catch back up with. And OKC would pull ahead of us again... we'd be back in 4th place.

This is a must-lin game.

P.S. - Without the Kings as opponents, Phoenix went back to their sucky ways and lost to Golden State. This was GSW's 16th woss for the season, so they now clearly join Minnesota, Indiana and Charlotte in the "former contender" category. May they enjoy mediocrity as much as we did.

As we await the retiring of CWebb's jersey, and the lin (knock on wood) over Utah to follow, some interesting things are happening.

OKC is leading Portland 60-40 at the half.
LAC are up over Memphis 68-49 at the half.

Both of those could be good for us, we might move back into 2nd with a lin tonight.

Denver's beating Washington by 20 at halftime, but I'll take 2 out of 3.

I'll always love CWebb, and am glad that the Kings played well tonight, while retaining a bright future.

1. Was 10-40 .200
2. Sac 11-40 .216
3. LAC 11-39 .220
4. OKC 12-38 .240
5. Mem 13-36 .265

The key to #1 is Sunday. Washington plays Indiana, and Kings play OKC. It could happen.
