Draft position thread

Mayo went off! 22 and 16? Here's your rookie of the year this year: Rose, Mayo, or Westbrook. It'll be one of those three. The easy money's on Rose, but my pick is Westbrook.

Anyway, it looks like the Clippers might have finally turned it around. Thornton and Gordon are studs. Randolph, Baron, and Camby might not have chemistry but they should win a fair number of games on talent alone. Well, if they manage to stay healthy. I was counting on Gilbert to bring some wins to Washington when he comes back, but if they're in full on tank mode already I don't see him making that big of an impact. (Besides, he's already expressed his thoughts on the subject and he wants them to tank it)

Actually, I'm not even watching our "competition" anymore. We've clearly distanced ourselves from the pack. My concern now is that the complete implosion in Houston gets bad enough that they miss the playoffs and we lose our pick. Though that could be a blessing in disguise if next years draft is significantly better. (Which reminds me -- For all the people that predicted Artest would destroy Houston's lockerroom morale -- I'll finally admit it. You were right. I was wrong. Artest is either a bigger problem than I was willing to admit or he's just got a black cloud following him wherever he goes.)

If Houston gets in the lottery, wouldn't bother me in the least. Next year, Artest will be a little bit crazier and McGrady a little bit older...

A quick update, after the lin in Dallas.

1. Sac 11-42 .208
2. Was 11-41 .212
3. LAC 12-40 .231
4. OKC 13-38 .255
5. Mem 15-36 .294

We are really tough -- can you imagine being one of the other crap teams and waiting in vain for an opportunity to gain even one game on us? We just don't win!

Grrrrr!!!

Yes, we went through a few years of inconsistency, but that's emphatically over now. We were in shock a month back at how the 8-27 start (.229) was the worst in franchise history, but after linning the Atlanta game we'll be at exactly .200, having lost 13 of our last 14 games. It's a rare team that pulls off that low of an average after 55 games. We truly deserve a top draft pick! Maybe 2 or 3!

All the contenders seem to be linning tonight, so the rankings have stayed pretty stable, will post an update before the weekend.

NOTE: One contender did NOT end up linning, the Clips WOST BIG TIME, and are now 13-40 (.245), tied with OKC. Things are looking up!

Going into the All Star Break, we're still #1! And gaining ground on all but Washington.

what are the protections on the pick beyond this year?

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Lottery protected 2010, top-10 protected 2011-12, top-5 protected 2013, top-3 protected 2014, unprotected 2015. But, considering that Houston's tied for 4th/5th in the West, I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet.

Update:

Ugh, lottery protected for both 09 and 10 drafts? Bummer

Yeah, we're probably better off hoping that Houston sneaks into the playoffs this year and we get it in the 18-20 range rather than hope it's going to be a really great pick 4 years down the line...

Update for the new Bradless, Fishless Kings. Have we ever, in franchise history, dipped below .200 before? I mean, after late November or so? I'm almost certain we haven't.

Stern, you need to help us! We've proven our worthiness!

Rest of the NBA: >.340

Thigns are so delicate in this race -- you screw up and accidentally have one little three game win streak, and you compeltely screw yourself and fault up 3 spots. We need these other pretenders to give us a little breathing room so we can come up with inevitable fake hustle charge in the last month of the season without serious consequences.

Tonight was a fine example of that, we came perilously close to being overtaken by Washington, and were only saved (for now) by their woss to the Nets. But now it's a ridiculously close race for the #1-#4 teams. We're one woss and a little bad luck away from 4th place.

The Kings need to win once in a while for the youngs' confidence. That is a very important factor for young players. Good thinng Washington won too though...

As long as we stay within the top 3, I think it'll be ok... Being the worse team does not guarantee the #1 pick.

The only reason tonight's woss bothered me much was because it was against a bottom-5 team. A win against a >.300 team would be a lot more meaningful, help morale more, and would not help a close draft competitor to catch up with us.

We're going to win some more games, and that's fine, I'd just like them to be wins over teams that don't totally suck &$#.

Anyone who has spent time watching the movies of the 1940s could pretty much have predicted the outcome of tonight's game... come on, all the pieces are there. The ragtag bunch of kids left to do the impossible with very little leadership and nothing more but heart and desire?

I can actually see Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney saying, "Come on, gang. Let's put on a show!"

It was adrenalin, it was what my grandmother used to call spunk, it was something that won't happen tomorrow night. We're going to win a few more games this season. It's almost inevitable. I can live with this one tonight.

Has that ever happened though? If so how many times?

I can tell you from experience that that sort of info is very hard to find (for more than the last few years, anyway), and if you do, it may be meaningless, because the lottery rules and odds change regularly. The only clear and authoritative thing you can say is: this summer, the odds for the 3rd worst team in the NBA will be:

1st: 15.5% chance
2nd: 15.7%
3rd: 15.6%
4th: 22.6%
5th: 26.5%
6th: 4.0%

So the chance of dropping to 6th is pretty slim, but dropping to 5th is a definite possibility... if you had to bet on a single outcome for the #3 team, 5th pick would be where the smart money was.

You know what i saw out there? A group of 7 (sorry k9), who played w/a purpose, played w/a desire, and played with a knowledge that these 7 are the guys who they are going into battle with. Shorthanded, heavy minutes on the first leg, and I liked the resilience I saw.

Yes, it wasn't against the best of teams, and standings wise, it could come back and bite us. Regardless, although it does hold true for all our games, they needed this. I saw some gelling tonight, I saw some semblance of team, and saw roles being acknowledged, and filled.

Well said. You could tell there was something there that we haven't seen for a while. It was almost a "We are all we've got" attitude. The last ones standing after the deadline.

It was very refreshing.

I hope we at least get a top 3 pick this year. If we end up winning a few games and end up in the 7th to 8th spot...ugh. I think Memphis has a good chance to end up #1, IMO. If they got Griffin, they would have a GREAT lineup for the future (as would most teams)! There are so many bad teams this year..

Kings: 12 wins
OKC: 13 wins
Clippers: 13 wins
Washington: 13 wins
Memphis: 15

I don't think Minnesota or Golden State will lose as many as us, so I'm going to leave them off..but we could EASILY go from 1st to 5th spot by simply going on a 2-3 game winning streak!

With OKC's lin over GSW last night, tonight's LAC lin over Portland will make this race even more ridiculously close... who will be the team that sucked horribly all year, only to come away with #4's lottery chances? It's going to happen to one of us...

Standings as of Monday morning will be:

1. Sac 12-45 .211
2./3./4. LAC/OKC/Was 13-43 .232
5. Mem 15-40 .273

On Monday night this will change, since we're playing NO and GSW are playing LAC. Hopefully West and CPaul teach our kids some valuable lessons, and the Clips manage an upset woss.

GO CLIPPERS!

Well, we survived what SHOULD have been a very close call, and the Clippers wose again! Against the Celtics, no less! :D WAY TO GO CLIPPERS!

1. Sac 12-47 .203
2./3. OKC/Was 13-44 .228
4. LAC 15-43 .259
