Dog On It!
They just said on KHTK that word is that the Magic will announce tomorrow that they are buying out Doug's contract. Also said that the Christie's have been in touch with both the Sonics and the Kings. (They did not say they were in touch about a job as a player or other position in the organization.)

It's still disappointing the way Doug basically just quit on the Magic franchise. That's kind of the ironic thing -- he (and his wife of course) were kind of known as problem personalities before they hit Sacto. Then he came to the Kings, and over 5 years became this classy captain for us. Then he leaves, and its back to problem again.

It could clear the way for a return, but to what end I wonder? I'd rather go with the kids at this point, and Doug zaps their minutes. And Bonzi is just flat out better. If we can't get Bonzi you could do worse as a bencher and veteran insurance behind the kids. But I just don't trust Rick not to end up taking their minutes and giving them to the trusted vet. If we only had one kid, maybe a 50/50 split or something could give the one kid enough minutes to develop, but with TWO kids, if you brought in Doug and gave him even 20 minutes that's 14 min per for the kids, which is just not enough. Doug is not a championship level OG at this point, is very near the end, so what is the point of squishing your future?

Well, it may not be that Doug is interested in playing anymore. They just said "talking" to the Sonics and Kings. I was thinking it could be other than as a player.

The Kings knew what they were doing when they traded Doug. If he comes back, it will be for the vet min, and he will be played sparingly. The Kings are not stupid enough to bring back an aging guy like that and give him serious PT just for the warm-fuzzies. I would be happy to see Doug back, but only in a reserve role.

Hey I wonder how reliable a source it is, cause cant Doug get in trouble for talking to other teams before his contract is bought out? I mean who that close to him would risk getting him in trouble like that.

There are plenty of worse things that could happen than dc being brought back for the vets minimum. Has anyone heard what his condition is now after the surgery?

We have no evidence that Doug "quit" on the Magic. What we DO know is this: 1) Doug started to lose significant playing time, 2) Doug "got into it" with former GM Weisbrod over that issue, and 3) Doug subsequently opted to have season-ending surgery for bone spurs. That's it.

You can read the tea leaves in several different ways, but the truth is far beyond anyone's grasp here.

Here's one alternate scenario to consider:

Doug had been playing in pain with bone spurs and, when his playing time suddenly plummeted to next to nothing, he decided not continue to suffer, and thus that the impact to his team and his career was minimal to get the surgery done before the end of the season, in order to maximize recovery time so that he could have a healthy 05-06, his final contract year.

Well regardless of what else is the matter, his condition is that he's a 35 yr old guard. If we got Bonzi, and did not have either Kevin or Cisco, I would actually argue for Doug as a useful veteran OG/PG backup to fill in off the bench with solid play at both guard spots. But the presence of the kids means that giving an old man minutes in a year when we aren't title contenders is just dumb. You end up directly and negatively effecting the development of players who may be important to your future, which Doug is not a part of.

if we got bonzi, then martin and garcia would get pretty much no PT (maybe 5-8 min/game)... if you are worried about developing the young guys, then bringing back doug for a limited role (20min/game) and letting the youngsters get some PT behind him, would help quicken their development.... bonzi would be a great addition, but you know adelman, bonzi would be playing 35min/game and martin and garcia would get very little, if any PT....

now if the kings are confident in the martin and garcia duo, then bringing doug back, and not trade for bonzi, would make the most sense... doug could start the game and give way to martin and garcia, much like reggie miller was doing in indy, before artest was suspended...

All of which is true. But he still quit on them. Wasn't happy with being traded. Is kind of a big child about such things, complained, moped, and bailed on them since he didn't want to be there anyway. And then came back this year and asked them to just release them because he wasn't happy anywhere but the West coast. Just not very professional at all, except for for us. And as always the strong implication is that he is just a weak individual, and perhaps assisted and even encouraged to be so by his wife. You notice how she is often the spokewoman. Guess its much easier to control a weak one. If I was an Orlando fan I would be spitting mad. Thanks for nothing and all that. Didn't even give us an effort for his millions.

If Bonzi is playing 35min a game, then its tough luck for the kids, but I think people underestimate how good Bonzi Wells is. IF he can hold it together enough to earn 35min then he is likely better than either kid will ever be. Could easily go 17pts 6rebs 1.6stls as an OG, and is still in his prime. Bonzi is not a waste-- if he works he's a very talented guy on the same level as our core (of course he may not work) and could be here for years as the core winds down.

Doug, on the other hand, IS a waste with the kids around. He is not part of the future, but the past.

But he (Bonzie) looks like a Kewpie doll...without the curl. (Okay, and without the cute little party dress...)
