No this is not a 'personnel move' type of thread. This is a thread about what exactly we need to play with Tyreke. We need a Big Shot Billups. A while back a poster mentioned Chauncey Billups (kudos to that poster, when they mentioned it I was just about to post it) as a possible 'pg' to play next to Tyreke and it is exactly what we need. I understand that Billups himself is aging, maybe about 3-4 more years of productivity left, but if that 3-4 years were next to Tyreke it would do wonders to teach him what he needs to know and afford him the chance to perfect his jumpshot to become more deadly.

Billups is a deadly late game marksman. Melo is going elsewhere and Ty Lawson is the future at the pg position anyway for Denver, what would stop them from doing a combo package of Landry with Casspi/Greene/Dalembert/Beno/Garcia/pick/cash for Billups if they decide to trade Melo? Probably nothing, and if they deem that they are getting some sort of return on their investment of Billups then they would be more apt to make this trade. If I were the Kings, and competing for the next 2-3 years (after this one of course) was my MO, then this is a move I would strongly consider given the current roster.

I hope you aren't suggesting that The Kings would give up 6 players, a pick, and cash to get Billups, because if you are, you are truly insane.

My bad. I thought you may have meant that but the way you typed it really wasn't clear. I'd gladly give Landry and Dalembert for Billups. Or, Landry or Dalembert and Beno, if they'd take his contract.
 
I wouldn't mind getting him for the right price, but no way I'm giving up a youngin for him. So I'd have to pass on this one, he would do wonders mentoring wise for the team, but I'd rather just go through the motions of the team learning as they play more and more.
 
Ok, first of all I started a "Let's Get Chauncey" thread last month in Personnel. Secondly...somehow the OP is not thinking this is a Personnel thread...so if you agree with that somehow post here. If you want to talk about how to actually acquire Chauncey go find my old one, or I'll eventually just have to shift this thread over to Personnel as well.

I'd consider giving up either Casspi or Greene (I'd rather give up Greene) for Billups, especially if they'd take Beno as well. Getting rid of either Casspi or Greene would shorten the rotation and end the who's going to be The Kings starting SF dilemma. Getting rid of Beno would help adsorb some of Billup's salary. That combined with adding Billup's experience, clutch shooting, and leadership could help the team a lot in my opinion.

I see where your going with this. Greene seems like a very slow developer up to this point, but if were going to trade him I'd rather do it for someone a little younger and that can help us win when they actually mean something. The good thing would be to get rid of Beno so that would make me think twice about it, a tempting offer none the less.

I'd see Billups as a bridge to help the team get from where they are now to where they want to be. Obviously at 34 he isn't isn't going to be playing long enough to be their franchise PG for the next decade, but he could help to get the Kings where they ultimately want to be, (title contenders) and he could sure help the team be a lot more respectable along the path getting there. Point guards can and often do play at a pretty high level into their late 30s. See Nash, Kidd, and Fisher, they're all 37 I believe and still vital players on their teams. So you could conceivably use The Kings 2011 pick for a PG, then get a solid 2 or 3 years out of Billups as your starting PG, then move the 2011 draft pick PG into the starting lineup once Billups is done.

Good points. The only question would be how much the Kings would value a player like Billups. He would be a stop gap solution, but he would make the Kings atleast respectable to watch, so you would hope.

Billups would have one thing that no one else on the Kings has, a high level of talent combined with a lot of experience. I pointed out in another thread that I think the biggest problem the Kings have right now is that their really talented guys lack experience and their really experienced guys lack talent. Having a guy like Billups that has the experience and the talent could be the glue that could bring this team together and get them playing at least half way respectable basketball. If I'm not mistaken, I think even Tyreke has mentioned that The Kings need a veteran player who can be their leader right now. Obviously Dalembert, Garcia, Beno, and Landry don't have what it takes to be that leader. I think Billups does, though. The more I think about it, short of acquiring a superstar, acquiring Billups would probably be about the best thing this team could do right now.

Im not giving up anything for him though. I dont love his character.

He tried too hard to be the man on team USA this summer. Melo isnt a big fan of playing with him, and lastly he isnt having a very good season.

.351 FG% this season and his 3 point shooting has been as bad as Rekes. He is rebounding worse then Beno and his assists numbers arent great. I just feel like he is very much over the hill and not worth giving up anything good for.

I'd take other guys like Iggy or Jeff Green over him in a heartbeat.

Bullups FG% is low to start this year but it's not a big concern, it happens sometimes, just look at most Kings' players this year. His 3 point percentage is fine though at 35% (Tyreke's is only 25%). Overall Billup's numbers this year, per 36 minutes are similar to Beno's (which is OK because Beno's numbers are pretty good) but, and I can't emphasize this enough, he's a far better defender than Beno is. He's also got a reputation for being clutch, making good decisions, and is an 88% free throw shooter. All things considered, he's an upgrade over Beno. Billups also only has a year and a half left on his contact and is a team option for 2011/2012 so The Kings wouldn't be talking any long term risk if he didn't work out well.

I want to bring him in just so that he can badmouth the whole team to the media and say how ****ed up the coaches are and how these so-called NBA players don't have a clue what they are doing. Sort of like ... having some reliable criticism of the team.

I'm sick of how stupid this team plays. They have talent, and I haven't watched that many years of basketball, but from what I have watched I've never seen a team make this many stupid mistakes/play with such poor flow night in and night out.
 
I wouldn't mind him not for the stat's he'll put up but his LEADERSHIP. He can mentor these kids at a higher level then our coaches can and provide real leadership. I'm not sure what it'd take for the Nuggets to pull the trigger but we can't give up too much.

Landry might be the only price I pay for him so they may shed his salary. If we're giving up much more we need Affalo :) But we should hopefully pick him up in the off-season

Exactly. But on top of that he's a better PG than anyone on the King's roster and doesn't have much time left on his contract so there's no long term risk. He isn't a long term solution or a franchise player but he's got a few good years left and could probably help The Kings at least get back to a somewhat respectable level in that time and help with developing the young guys in the meantime. I would give Donte Greene (I'm not as high on Greene as some people are) if The Nuggets would take either Franisco or Beno in the deal as well.
 
I didn't want to make a new thread, but I wouldn't mind Grant Hill either. His life experiences would be invaluable to this team since he has been at both ends of the NBA totem pole. I saw him on his NBA tv special and he was basically a player coach for them. What do you guys think?
 
no way. He would not be a leader here. Has the ego of a star and would not take well to the losses, his talent has significantly declined already, and it's almost certain his last year option will be bought out in the summer and would require a new deal.

What's to like about this? horrible idea
 
Billups would be a great player to mentor our kids, but I don't see him leaving Denver. He's a hometown boy and I don't think he'd allow himself to be traded to a team like the Kings this late in his career.

Good point. And who can blame him? Not me. That's the problem when you suck and are a small market. You need good players to get better, but good players don't want to come until you are better. It leaves you totally reliant on the draft.

Billups would be fantastic for the Kings to acquire. Even if you just got two years out of him, he'd be great for the youngins, especially Tyreke. The only two guys on this team I wouldn't trade are Tyreke and Cousins, but I don't have an opinion on the specific players I would include in the deal.
 
I can clearly see Billups leaving Denver following Melo. But to have him come here? Honestly, it's not fair to him to bring him into this mess. Not at 33 yr old. He has a few good years left, and deserves to play for a contender.
 
I agree with him coming here would be very undeserving on his part. I am sure he would want to be on a contender when he finishes up his career, not trying to build up a cellar dweller team.
 
Perfect fit for this team both in terms of style and a savvy vet who has been there and done that. He would also provide much needed leadership in the locker room.

If we were on the cusp of something like everyone had hoped, and if he had more than a couple years left in him, I think it would work. Joining a 5-18 team? I don't think he'd be the positive influence we would be looking for.
