Beno Udrih Appreciation Thread

I know it's easy to overlook on such a chaotic day, but let's not forget to show some appreciation to a guy who gave us some good years of consistent play as a King. Wish you luck in Milwaukee Beno!

Forget beno!! Kid played NO DEFENSE!!! & defense makes winners play and simple!!!

Beno You and you're mid range game and offense will always be appreciated.. good luck in Milwaukee!

Forget beno?? last year he was the only guy consistent enough to get praise... this is of course an appreciation thread Its not how bad or how good he played in our eyes. he was a Sacramento King.. he gave us his services for 3 years.. to send him off like "forget beno defense makes winners... etc." is just classless man.

you're forgetting the man has rings... name one guy in our roster that has a ring?

Beno really settled into an effective role over time, I'm sorry to see him go. Farewell Beno Drano, Tasmanian Slovenian.

Thanks Beno! You were a Good Guard for the Kings. You never tried to do more then you were capable of and you always took demotions well. Your midrange floater WAS a thing of beauty, but your pull up jumpers in the lane were what I thought was cool. Your whirling dervish in the lane spin move was always fun to watch as well. Good Bye Beno ! You played little D, but that's not your fault...You are a Euro. Wish Casspi was going with you...

We appreciate your contributions to the Kings and wish you well in Milwaukee.

Yeah was just coming on because I remembered nobody had started one of these yet.

Thx Beno. You played yourself all the way from bad contract that needed to be moved to you will be missed. You certainly displayed a better team attitude than the man for whom you got traded. Best of luck in Milwaulkee. I don't envy you Skiles, butb maybe you can teach Jennings how to shoot.

I remember when you got your contract after Bibby was dealt, and people didn't understand and questioned your game. You proved to be one of the few to still feature the mid-range game and pull-up J correctly in the entire league. I will miss watching that when all I will be seeing is a haphazard charge into the lane by Evans or 3's all day long by Jimmer and Thornton. I wish your teammates learned more from you. Good luck Beno.

Thank you Beno for being a solid guard and providing maturity and leadership. I wish you all the best for your future on and off the court. :)

Good luck, Beno. I will you in Sacramento. Thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. Hope your family finds a good new home.

As one of the biggest Beno defenders on KFs, I'll post my thanks to him as observations and predictions:

The Kings are going to sorely miss his clutch FT shooting - he was the ONLY King you could count on to drain the desperately-needed FT's, and he won quite a few games just last season because of it (and many other games were lost because other Kings shot the FTs).

Beno's pull-up J HAS to be about 75% accurate - that HAS to be the best pull-up jumper in the entire NBA (can anybody think of anyone who makes a better %?).

Beno was inarguably the most consistent King.
Getting rid of the most consistent player, who always showed up and was ready when on the court, when the team is horribly inconsistent and lost tons of games because of it, is a huge mistake that may bite the organization in the butt.
When the Kings were flailing on the court and desperately needed a basket, I personally saw tons of times this year that it was Beno that saw the opening and made the play (whether it be a drive and bucket or a drive-and-dish or a pull-up J).

He was one of the few stabilizing factors on a team that is barely holding together. Between the immaturity of Tyreke and DMC, and the boneheadedness of Westphal, getting rid of a glue guy might be quite damaging next year.

After watching all season long because people were hyper-critical of him, I believe Beno's defense was consistently better than perceived. He had many multi-steal games and regularly broke up plays but didn't get credited for a steal. If anyone thinks Jimmer is going to be able to defend any better against these NBA PG's, they're going to get a rude awakening.

Blaming Beno for the inability of a team to stop opposing PG's always showed the fanbase's ignorance, IMO.

PG's CAN NOT BE STOPPED in the NBA - you see it all over the league, every single night. There's a reason why almost every other team (except the Kings) runs the pick and roll 20 times a night - because it's so hard to defend. Blaming Beno for somehow not being able to teleport through the screen always was absurd to me. Once the screen happens, it's the OTHER player who has to make the adjustment and allow the guard the extra moment to get around the screen and back in front of his man - and the Kings players were woefully incapable of that.
But the fanbase blamed Beno for that.

Further, Beno got around his man just as much (if not more) than his guy did. And that's without the help of pick-and-rolls.

Beno was a professional. He always showed up to play, had the right attitude, and would actually RUN the plays the coach drew up (unlike many other Kings). He was usually not involved in the catastrophic meltdowns that cost so many games last year - it was another King who botched the play.

Further, he called out the organization when it was full of **** - this was and is a VITAL quality of a veteran player.
When Westphal was being a complete dunderhead and losing the player's confidence, Beno stepped up and said what needed to be said, and took his lumps for it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons he was traded - I don't think the organization appreciates being accurately called out when they are sucking.

Beno was always supportive of his teammates, with his play and from the bench. He set up countless Kings to succeed on the court, not that many of them took advantage of it.

He effortlessly morphed his game from running the offense and being one of the primary guys in it, to a back-up role who would pick and choose his spots to drive to the basket (with the highest completion % of anyone on the team IMO) or pull up for a pull-up J (high %). That kind of game-change is not easy and not many players could do it - this shows his skill, and I doubt if John Salmons has the capability to change his game to accommodate other players the way that Beno proved.

That is the main reason why I think this trade is going to prove to be a bad one in the end.
It's not just anyone that can fit in with the odd group of players the Kings have (especially Tyreke), and Beno proved he could. Getting rid of him for someone who has proven that he CAN'T do it is a big mistake in my eyes.

good luck beno, i cant count how many times his pull up j had me screaming what a bad shot that was, only for him to drain them like layups. guy is really good and i hope he finds his way on to a team that contends for a title at some point. a pro's pro.

Good Luck Beno.. You will be missed. I was one person who thought this was a bad move.. If they ever trade for you again in the future you will be welcomed back.

I liked Beno. I thought many kingsfans were a bit too hard on him last season. He seemed to be the only one who could right the ship when things were rocky. And i think the team was just starting to figure that out.

I agree with all the positive comments by Kings fans here wishing Beno Udrih well. One thing about Beno's defense or so-called lack of it. Fundamentally, it was mostly sound - no doubt started under his training in San Antonio with Coach Pop. He almost always kept his arms out-stretched helping to deflect balls on D, took charges as good as anyone on the Kings, and did not back down - in short he tried his best. It was just that he was not quite quick enough to stay in front of his man all the time - but with the Chris Paul's, John Wall's, and other fast NBA PGs who does. All in all, a noble, workman-like professional effort, very much appreciated by this Kings fan.

So I finally got an answer to my question that I posted some time ago if Beno is a King? Some posters didn't get the question and wrote about cupcakes. The answer came from Kings front office. Beno is not a King and he never was. He was just a patch that helped to to fill the void. Some of you are writing that he is a pro's pro. What does that mean? That he does what he is asked to, that he doesn't cause any problems, that he is on time to practice, that he has all that skills he needs? Yep, then he is a pro's pro.
But he doesn't posses a PASSION for the game and that is why he isn't a KING anymore. That is why he was dumped from the Spurs and that's why he is dumped from the Kings. Now he will be a pro's pro with mighty Bucks. He will play for them with no passion, just for their money. And then he'll get dumped again. Good luck Beno with your "show me your money" attitude. Grab it while you can, the end is near.

I never thought Beno's D was exactly horrible. Its a guard's game with the rules the NBA have today. The PG's that can be stopped out there, are some of the worst ones. I always thought Beno did more good than bad. And like Jerry Reynolds had said, " He's definitely a part of the solution". Oh well. We'll see how we fare next season. Have fun in Milwaukee Beno.

I hope that Beno continues his career with the professionalism and the will to compete that he showed the past couple of seasons. Glad to have had him.

This is up there with the worst posts I've ever seen on any forum just for it's sheer stupidity. How petulant, ungrateful and childish you're showing yourself to be.

Thanks for everything Beno. You're one of the few true professionals we've had over the last 5 or so years. You kept your mouth shut and did your job to the maximum of your ability. I wish you all the best in Milwaukee and I'm sure the fans there will soon come to appreciate your steadiness and professionalism.

All the best Beno!

Really appreciate all you did for the team in your stint here. You will be missed!

Sidenote: Beno's one of the few NBA players I've ever seen in person. He came to Singapore in 2006 with the Slovenian national team. Saw Darko and Ginobili as well.
