Bee reporting that Westphal will be next coach

Wow, horrible decision to pass up Thib IMO. I'm no longer supporting the Kings by attending games or buying merchandice. I'm very disappointed right now.

You just wrote Carmichael Dave, eh? Hahaha...look, Thibo will get a shot. Reminded me a lot of Iavaroni, though...

I'm sure he will be great, I am not going to jump off a bridge. He does seem kinda sorta... boring. But he does have the best track record of the candidates.

This, Sharks getting bounced early, Faber losing, and the Lakers winning the championship. This has been a horrible stretch for norcal sports and for me as a fan.

Now lets see if he brings in Porter and Elie as his assistants as rumored -- I liked that bench crew.

I haven't seen that. but yes that is the begining of a good crew. I wonder with all the cuts. How many assistants he will be allowed to have. Will SAR and Pete's services be retained as well?

The More I think about it. Westphal, Porter, and Ellie all have more coaching experience than out last 3 coaching staffs combined. I would love that staff. In fact had I known he might bring in assistants like that I would have never had a question of who my top choice would have been.

Say what you want to about this hire. Its definatley not a step backward.

I guess one thing that worries me is that Paul's last 2 stints were unsuccessful. Seattle was 8 years ago. However, he went 7-20 for Pepperdine in his last season and was canned... So I don't think Doug Cristie is a fan of this move.

Good move by the Kings for the following reasons:

1. Westphal has experience and has coached winning basketball teams in the playoffs. That is one good sign. He konws what he is doing. He may not have been coaching for a long time, but its not like he hasnt been watching it in the past few years. He was a college coach for 5 years at Pepperdine university and has been an analyst and an announcer for I think if I remember correctly, the Clippers.

2. His staff is an excellent crew. Terry Porter has excellent knowledge of the Kings team, maybe helping out Westphal in areas of basketball. Elie was an assistant coach for Dallas so he knows the game pretty well himself. Paul Westphal possibly brought the best assistant coaches in the whole league in comparison.

Westphal's failure at Pepperdine is somewhat of a red flag for me, but he's a step up from Natt/Theus/Musselman. I think he has a decent shot at bringing us to mediocrity and we'll see from there...

It's only rumored that that is who he wants to bring on board. It's not a done deal yet.

No coach that you bring in is going to be perfect. If they are perfect (like Phil Jackson or Popovich) they'd still be coaching!!!

Actually this is the best pick from all the prospective coaches interviewed. He is experienced, has a great winning percentage and wasn't he an assistant coach with Avery in Dallas. So he hasn't been out of the loop for too long. He was still involved in the game just not as a head coach for an NBA team.

This is a good signing. People will say he has a great record because he had talented teams but as Bricklayer said, what ever the roster you won't win 60 games if you are not a good coach. For the first time since the Adelman firing I am feeling reasonmably confident about our coach. He is no Adelman but at least he has won before and if given the talent, he can win again.

I will repeat what I said in the closed thread: this was the SAFEST pick, not necessarily the best candidate.

For starters, he comes cheap. He's been out of the NBA for a while, and got fired from a college gig. He's not in demand, and had zero leverage to negotiate salary. If the job was offered, I think he would take it no matter what the pay was.

Second, his previous success as a head coach eliminates excuses. If he fails to turn this team in the right direction, the "risk" card cannot be played by the critics like it was with Reggie and Muss, who either weren't successful head coaches, or had no experience. They covered their butt. I don't think they would have chosen Thibodeau or Rambis for that reason, even though they may be better coaches at this point.

So, the Kings got the most appropriate candidate that fit what they wanted, which was cheap and safe IMO. This is one of those times where I wish I was wrong, and hope to be proven wrong in the future.

Pepperdine was very agonized over letting Westphal go as he was very well thought of by everyone at the university, seen as an excellent coach, but in the end a victim of unlucky circumstances. His very first year they went 22-7 and landed a birth in the NCAA tourney. Things began to slide a bit after that due to injuries and academic disqualifications involving several star players. Still, he was head coach for 5 seasons there before going back into broadcasting and finally returning again to NBA as an assistant.

I agree that Westphal is the safe choice, but I think he'll teach the game to the kids well, stay out of the media, and help bring back a winning culture to Sacramento. I really like those choices as assistant coaches, it would be a wonderful start. Lets make it happen, and go Kings!

Its not all bad:

Paul Westphal
Overall: 267 - 159
Playoffs: 27 - 22

Year Team Season Playoffs
1992 PHO 62 - 20 13 - 11
1993 PHO 56 - 26 6 - 4
1994 PHO 59 - 23 6 - 4
1995 PHO 14 - 19 0 - 0
1998 SEA 25 - 25 0 - 0
1999 SEA 45 - 37 2 - 3
2000 SEA 6 - 9 0 - 0

My concerns are that he's been out of the game for a long time, and its been even longer since he had real success.

I wouldn't call being an advisor to Donnie Nelson last year and an assistant for the Mavs the year before out of the game for a long time. Of the past 10 years he hasn't been on the bench for only 2 of those years including last year. As for point 2 I agree. But on the bright side, Adelman took over a good team in Portland then was a disaster in GS before coming to the Kings. Maybe history can repeat itself.

If those rumors are true, then that is a very bright spot from my vantage point.

For those considering pulling up stakes as a Kings fan, since Thibodeau wasn't hired...from Yahoo Sports:

Boston Celtics assistant coach Tom Thibodeau pulled himself out of consideration for the job earlier on Tuesday.

This, rather than any pressure from Westphal, may have sped things up.

I never said Westphal had to be perfect, I think he is actually a reasonable choice. He started out good at Pepperdine, but near the end of his tenure it was terrible and he had two players good enough for the NBA (Acker, Diawara; three if you count McGowan, NBADL).

Regardless, I'm rooting for his success with the Kings and it's exciting to have an experienced head coach and hopefully a new, retooled team.

Well, we really don't know why he pulled himself out of consideration (if that's even true). That's too thin to draw conclusions, because we could speculate that he pulled out because Boston wanted him back and Sac was ho-hum about their coaching situation and didn't seem to want to go after anybody.

It's not like Rick Adelman was an exciting or sexy pick when we brought him in in 98 either. I'm taking a wait and see attitude with this one, especially if he brings Elie and Porter with him.
