Kings camp buzz: Day 5

Sixth man is honored

The Kings released their gold line of fan tributes at Fandemonium on Saturday night.

First, a 10-foot gold statue of a No. 6 was unveiled on the southwest lawn outside Arco Arena for the sixth man - "the gold standard," as player personnel director Jerry Reynolds called the fans.

Then came the new jersey, a Washington Husky-esque version in all gold with purple lettering. The Kings will wear it in 14 games (12 on the road) this season.

(Bad) move of the day

The three-point shooting faceoff between center Brad Miller and KHTK's Tim Montemayor was ugly, with "Monty" chucking up 10 airballs and Miller equally bad with his underhanded, behind-the-back and left-handed attempts (he's right-handed). Forward Dan Langhi won the contest. Peja Stojakovic didn't compete.

Camping with Eric Sandrin

The 6-foot-8 forward from Seattle Pacific hadn't made much noise until Saturday, when he threw down a dunk over 7-footer Anwar Ferguson. The rookie was kind enough to make some more noise after practice, too.

Q: You played for the Harlem Globetrotters last year. What kind of experience was that?

A: That's the best experience I've had playing basketball, seeing the smiles on the kids' faces. Every kid growing up playing basketball had two dreams: either playing in the NBA or playing for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Q: Who on the Kings would make the best Globetrotter?

A: I don't know, maybe Brad Miller?

Q: OK, who would be the worst Globetrotter?

A: I don't know, maybe Brad Miller?

Q: What's the No. 1 thing you have to prove in training camp?

A: That I belong to be here and that I deserve to be here. That there's a spot on this team that I can help contribute to and make this team better.

Key dates

Tuesday: Preseason opener vs. Dallas at Arco Arena, 7 p.m.

Oct. 16: Vs. Golden State, 6 p.m. The Warriors beat the Kings four of five times, including preseason in 2004-05.

- Sam Amick, Jimmy Spencer

A-ha, this is the #40. Do you have his stats or skinny Warhawk?
You mentioned it but there're too many threads I can't find it.

14 games? Way too many!
Thanks fro the articles warhawk.

The jersey's aren't that bad, even if they are Laker like. Maybe the basketball gods will mistake us for the Lakers and send us a championship this year.

Washington Husky-esque? Oh please...

I don't like the new uniforms either, but the Washington Huskies have EXACTLY the same color scheme.

Yes, choosing gold as a color, especially when it's never been associated with the team before, is/was stupid since it will obviously evoke comparisons to the Lakers. But the writer still has a point. Not that it makes a difference (I still think they're ugly) but they look a lot more like a Washington rip-off than a Laker copy.

Maybe they'll grow on me. Especially if they start winning while wearing them.

They've already grown on me, due to watching some Huskies games this past season and liking them. Mainly because of Nate Robinson :). But also because I like that and was hoping for that gold color since they'd be gold of some kind.

If you note the color of the numbers, seems it looks like the Huskies women's team mroe than men's.

Oops. Sorry. I should have clarified...

I meant to ridicule the "HUSKY" part, not the concept. Last I had heard, the Washington team said HUSKIES on everything, unless of course due to budget restrictions they've had to reduce the size of the pack.

;)

Brick,

I know. I even hesitated to post the picture because I thought the same thing.

VF21,

Would it be grammatically correct to say "Huskies-like"? I always wonder that. If something reminds you of our team would you say "King-like" or Kings-like? I generally opt for the former.

KG,

I'm not sure. I thought so, but I had trouble finding a picture to verify that. The football helmets definitely are (as are most helmets I guess), which is what I initially thought of when I saw the comment from the Bee.

funky - It's like Attorney General. The plural is attorneyS-general, not attorney-generals. In this case, the team name is HUSKIES so it should have said HUSKIES-like.

:D

It's just another little boo-boo on the part of the Bee. They seem to make so many of them that you have to wonder if they abolished the basic proof reading/fact checking concept.
