Kings camp buzz: Day 5
Sixth man is honored
The Kings released their gold line of fan tributes at Fandemonium on Saturday night.
First, a 10-foot gold statue of a No. 6 was unveiled on the southwest lawn outside Arco Arena for the sixth man - "the gold standard," as player personnel director Jerry Reynolds called the fans.
Then came the new jersey, a Washington Husky-esque version in all gold with purple lettering. The Kings will wear it in 14 games (12 on the road) this season.
(Bad) move of the day
The three-point shooting faceoff between center Brad Miller and KHTK's Tim Montemayor was ugly, with "Monty" chucking up 10 airballs and Miller equally bad with his underhanded, behind-the-back and left-handed attempts (he's right-handed). Forward Dan Langhi won the contest. Peja Stojakovic didn't compete.
Camping with Eric Sandrin
The 6-foot-8 forward from Seattle Pacific hadn't made much noise until Saturday, when he threw down a dunk over 7-footer Anwar Ferguson. The rookie was kind enough to make some more noise after practice, too.
Q: You played for the Harlem Globetrotters last year. What kind of experience was that?
A: That's the best experience I've had playing basketball, seeing the smiles on the kids' faces. Every kid growing up playing basketball had two dreams: either playing in the NBA or playing for the Harlem Globetrotters.
Q: Who on the Kings would make the best Globetrotter?
A: I don't know, maybe Brad Miller?
Q: OK, who would be the worst Globetrotter?
A: I don't know, maybe Brad Miller?
Q: What's the No. 1 thing you have to prove in training camp?
A: That I belong to be here and that I deserve to be here. That there's a spot on this team that I can help contribute to and make this team better.
Key dates
Tuesday: Preseason opener vs. Dallas at Arco Arena, 7 p.m.
Oct. 16: Vs. Golden State, 6 p.m. The Warriors beat the Kings four of five times, including preseason in 2004-05.
