Artest trade stuff HERE!! (merged)

Speaking of radio, Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh was on. From a pacers fan:

First he was on WFAN in the morning, then he was on 1050espn, and finally he was on the Mike&Mad-dog show on WFAN again.

In all the interviews he basically said that since the Knicks are not giving up any of their youngsters there is no way Artest is going to New York.

I have a feeling that there is a bidding war or something going on between the Walsh and Isiah or something.

It's almost like Walsh is trying to put pressure on Isiah to do something.

Some of the comments from Isiah Thomas on Mike/Mad-Dog show today:

- Doesn't want to compromise team and future.

- Not giving up the young guys to the Pacers solves Artest to New York - Yes (as in no).

- Knicks have a long way to go, and a lot of work to do.

- Doesn't wish he didn't do one trade in the last two years.

- Have a solid foundation to build from.

- Eddy Curry/Frye are two building blocks.

- Would take Curry over anyone in the first round of next years draft (I think).

- March 1st - Marbury is a Knick, and a happy one.

ESPN - Indiana Pacers president Donnie Walsh is "encouraged" by the quality of the offers he has received for Ron Artest, including what he said were at least two proposals involving All-Star caliber players.

Without being specific about any of the 12-15 offers he said he had received, Walsh told ESPN.com he had heard from 20 teams, some of which merely called to ask what Walsh was looking for. Walsh said he was planning to get back to three of those teams to make specific requests.

"I've talked to a lot of teams, discussed myriad types of offers. Some are player for player, some involve first-round draft picks, some involve savings, some involve a combination of those things," Walsh said. "I'm encouraged by some of the things we were offered."

He would not set a timetable for trading Artest, though he did concede: "I'd like to get it behind us, but I don't feel any [time] pressure to do it. I'd like to winnow it down to two or three deals I'd like to do."

Artest has been placed on the inactive list and told to stay away from the team while Walsh fields trade offers. Artest's agent said he expects a trade to be completed by the end of the week. On Friday, Walsh told ESPN's Steven A. Smith that the Pacers will keep Artest on the inactive list for the rest of the season if they are unable to trade their disgruntled All Star. In that case, Artest would still receive his full salary.

Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird is in Spain on a scouting trip and has been receiving daily updates from Walsh over the telephone. Bird has made no plans to shorten his trip, Walsh said.

In the five days since Artest asked for a trade, saying he felt restricted in Rick Carlisle's offense, the rest of the Pacers have distanced themselves from him. Jermaine O'Neal said he'd like to see the Pacers acquire Bonzi Wells or Al Harrington for Artest.

Many league executives say Artest might only be a good fit for a coach with a proven track record of working well with players needing extra guidance. Three that fit that mold include Phil Jackson of the Lakers, Pat Riley of Miami and Larry Brown of the Knicks.

The Lakers were said by several sources to be one of the teams most interested in Artest, though not to the point where they'd consider trading Lamar Odom. The Heat could trade Antoine Walker, whose salary is almost an exact match for Artest's, while Knicks president Isiah Thomas' refusal to discuss Channing Frye has taken New York out of the running.

"I'm assuming I can't get a guy as good as [Artest]," Walsh said, adding that he had no preference for trading Artest to a Western Conference team rather than one from the East. "We're just going through the process to get to a point where we can choose something we like."

Quite interesting, indeed.

Voice one: Hey, Donnie. How's it hangin"?

Walsh: So you're calling about Artest?

Voice: Yep. We got a legitimate offer for you.

Walsh: Okay, but I'm not letting him go for cheap.

Voice: No problem, Donnie old man. We got the goods.

Walsh: Well?

Voice: We'll give you two bottles of BEER...

pause for uproarious laughter

... and lifetime season tickets to Piston games!!!

More uproarious laughter, a belch...and a dial tone.

Walsh, on intercom: Damn it, Louise! I told you no more prank calls!

Louise (sounding suspiciously like voice one): Oops. Sorry, sir.

Belch and more uproarious laughter...

VF, that comment by Walsh strikes me as something a GM/owner might say to drive up offers when they're initially being lowballed because the are now forced to trade their talented socially retarded lockdown defender. I can't imagine what all-star caliber players are being offered up for a guy who will CLEARLY screw up once or more at his new destination.

Me, too - which is what prompted the incredibly clever, witty bit of improv I posted.

;)

Two All-Star caliber players being offered?

Indiana Pacers president Donnie Walsh is "encouraged" by the quality of the offers he has received for Ron Artest, including what he said were at least two proposals involving All-Star caliber players.

The only teams that I can think will trade there All-Star players that Indiana would take are:

Sac Kings (Peja) and NJ Nets (Vince Carter)

On Espn last night they said that NJ was about to make some changes and it wasn't the coach. They thought that most likely it would be Carter. For once they might be right.
Walsh may just have said that though to generate more interest. I guess we'll find out.

Indy Star - Indiana Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said if he can't make a suitable trade for Ron Artest, he will leave the former All-Star forward on the team's inactive list.

Walsh said Friday he's heard from about 15 teams interested in Artest but that the Pacers are not going to jump at any offer.

"If we don't get a deal to our liking, we'll leave him on the inactive list," Walsh said.

The inactive list allows teams to change rosters on a game-to-game basis, but Walsh said Artest will remain there for the rest of the season -- if he stays with the Pacers. Artest will still be paid his $6.8 million this season.
Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, was quoted in Friday's USA Today saying he hoped Artest could remain with the Pacers.
"Hopefully it won't get done, and we can iron out the differences and work past this," Stevens told USA Today.
Walsh's comments Friday seem to make that scenario unlikely.

ESPN - The Denver Nuggets don't exactly qualify as desperate. Compared to the Lakers, they've got a nucleus with more polish and better balance.

Yet NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Denver is pursuing Ron Artest as hard as anyone, and here's an explanation: If you want to narrow the gap with West powerhouse San Antonio, acquiring Artest to counter Manu Ginobili isn't a bad idea ... assuming, of course, that Artest is actually playing as opposed to doing or saying things that get him suspended.

The Nuggets also have a coach who, a bit like Artest, is known for his eccentricities. Although my old studio-show colleague George Karl probably won't appreciate being lumped into the same sentence with Ron-Ron, I could see them co-existing.

It would certainly be volatile, probably wilder than Furious George and Gary Payton in Seattle, but it's a pairing with potential, as is Carmelo Anthony and Artest.

I don't know if anyone here or in the media has talked about this already but something accured to me. If the only teams that should really be looking at Artest are ones with serious playoff/championship hopes as Barkley and others have said what happens when the team who ends up w/ Artest has to go to Detroit or Indiana during the playoffs if it's an east team or the championship if it's a western conferece team? Can you imagine the distraction and negetive hype that would create? I wonder if this is a factor for any of the teams considering trading for him?

Walsh was been blowing smoke up the NBA's collective arses. "Caliber" is a tricky word- it means that its not absolutely inconcievable that a player could make it to the All-Star game, but probably never will. He's just trying to stir up GMs to make better offers. For the Kings, our all-star caliber player could be Kenny Thomas, or Bonzi Wells. This isn't much of news.

I doubt it. Sure there'll be talk and focus on him through out the season, but don't really see what would be happening with that in the playoffs, other than some. If he's on a team that makes it. There'd be talk about him in Indiana (if he was still playing for them) or playing vs. Detroit, regardless.

Mr. Artest sure has his neck in a sling now. Dissed his teammates and entire organization to demand a trade stirring up the whole league in the process, now want to come back as the prodigal son? Any support I had for our acquisition of Ron just evaporated. The guy needs to have his meds checked cause something is out of balance.

This is eerily reminiscent of the Peja " I want to be traded" scenario last year, except one's a tough nut, and the other soft like a raisin.

On ESPN radio about 2:30pm west coast, the fill in guy was talking to ESPN's Rick Bucher and the topic was Corie Maggette for Artest, straight up. Corie being a scorer, runner, hustler and can play 2 or 3.

THAT would worry me, having him on the Clips, in the west. That could put the clips up very close to Spurs.

Bucher also made a comment that in talking with someone high up in Pacers that Artest is not even the craziest guy on the team!! Could Pollard be crazy/crazier?? Stephen Jackson? interesting comment.

Scot Pollard is not crazy/crazier than Ron Artest, by any means.

Hmmmm. Artest working for Sterling. That might be fun to watch...

;)

Sterling probably figures that if Artest does something stupid again and get suspended that will be ok with him because Ron would not get paid even saying him more money in salary payrol.
