6 Moves the Kings should make...

twslam07

All-Star
Move #1
Resign Marcus Thornton. 6 million for 4 years

Move #2
Sign Tyson Chandler. 10 million for 4 years

Move #3
Sign Shane Battier. 8 million for 2 years

Move #4
Trade Jason Thompson for a future draft pick.

Move #5
Sign Anthony Carter or Earl Watson. 1 – 2 million for 1 year

Move #6
Sign Chuck Hayes. 1 – 2 million for 1 year

PG – Tyreke/Jimmer/Watson/Thomas
SG – Thornton/Garcia
SF – Salmons/Battier/Greene/Honeycutt
PF – Cousins/Hickson/Hayes
C – Chandler/Whiteside

Our 8 man rotation would be Tyreke, Thornton, Jimmer, Salmons, Battier, Cousins, Chandler, Hickson. While Garcia and Whiteside give us spot minutes.

This puts us at a salary cap of around 57 million for this year and the next year.

After the 2012/2013 season JJ Hickson, Shane Battier, Francisco Garcia, and Donte Greene will be unrestricted free agents. This will put us at around 37 million giving us around 22 – 23 million in cap room to resign JJ Hickson, our draft picks, and any other fill ins. I would say that it would take around 13 – 14 million to accomplish that. This would bring us to a 50 – 51 million payroll.

After the 2013/2014 season Tyreke Evans, John Salmons, and Hassan Whiteside will be unrestricted free agents. This will put us at around 36 million giving us about 24 million to resign Tyreke Evans, a small forward of our choosing, and any other fill ins. I could see us signing these guys for around 16 – 24 million depending on how good Tyreke Evans and Hassan Whiteside turn out to be. This would bring us to 52 – 60 million payroll.

After the 2014/2015 season DeMarcus Cousins, Tyson Chandler, and Marcus Thornton will be unrestricted free agents. This will put us around 30 – 38 million giving us 22 – 30 million in cap room to resign DeMarcus Cousins and anyone else they want to fill their roster with. They could resign Thornton and Chandler again or somebody else.

This game plan could definitely do some damage in the future. It gives them flexibility in regards to signing and resigning players almost every year, veteran players who are great role models and that are committed to the defensive side of the ball, and a solid core for many years.

Agree with #1-4, especially #4. Would love to sign Chandler.

JT is not the 3rd big for the future. His BB IQ will never make him more than a fringe contributor in this league. Trade him now, hopefully for a pick. I'd swap him for a $.99 chicken sandwich...

Even if Petrie wanted to he wouldn't do this. I acknowledge Petrie's judgement and talent for his job and I wish him luck in picking and choosing. He needs it.

lolwut!?

JT is great as a 3rd big. Can play the 4 or the 5. Good rebounder, good passer, decent defender, good attitude. Decent jumper. Sure he does a lot of cringeworthy stuff on the court, and I cant disaggree that he's a bit lacking in the BBIQ, but he's not THAT bad. He plays best when he's given a roll, and considering the jokes of coaches we've had here during his time as a King, he hasnt been given a set roll often.

Could we do better? Sure! But I wouldnt trade him for a $.99 sandwich, chicken or no, thats a KT deal!

Also, we dont really need any more picks. The youth movement is pretty much over and done with. We need vets (which the OPs other plans would net us).

As to the deals proposed by the OP, I like them. (besides #4).

Not bad

I agree with Thornton and Tyson Chandler. After signing those two and the rookies, would the Kings have enough cap space to pursue Battier. If so, I'm definetly good with that.

As an alternative to Battier, I would also consider trading a package of JT, Greene, and cash consideratiosn for a re-signed Wilson Chandler, if he can get out of his Chinese contract. Chandler could address a number of the Kings' swingman issues but for much longer than 2 years because he's young. I probably like Chandler for similar reasons that Battier is so liked: good attitude, low usage on offense but with 3 point range, athletic, versatile defender with good height, length, and strength. He can guard those bigger small forwards that Salmons just can't quite handle and, if the Kings play their cards right, could ultimately replace Salmons as starting small forward next season.

I agree that the Kings would need another big and perhaps Chuck Hayes is that guy if the price is right.

I'm not convinced that the Kings need another point guard, although Petrie probably feels different. An Earl Watson type would probably suffice: a low usage veteran with a good assist to turnover ratio.

Depth Chart:
Evans/Watson/Thomas
Thornton/Fredette/Garcia
Salmons/W. Chandler/Honeycutt
Cousins/Hickson/Hayes
Chandler/Whiteside

So the eight man rotation consists of Evans, Thornton, Salmons, Cousins, T. Chandler, Fredette, W. Chandler, and Hickson.

I really enjoyed your post and the cap specifics that you included though. Very concise and well thought out.

Why don't we trade Cousins and Evans for future draft picks as well. I'm constantly amazed how some of our fans undervalue our players.

I don't like the idea of Coach West tinkering with Cousins, Chandler, Hickson, and Thompson. It's one too many bodies in my opinion. I know everyone mentions it, but Carl Landry is a great example of what I'm talking about.

What would you do if you had those four guys at your disposal?

Need to trade Jimmer too. That way we could really really get back to building for the future

What? Trading JT for a pick when we're picking up other bigs who are better or just as good is not that big of a deal. Evans and Cousins are a million times better than JT.

I'd start Chandler and Cousins together, and see how it goes. And by how it goes, I mean stick to it for 25 or 30 games minumun. I'd bring in Thompson for Chandler and Hickson for Cousins. If on any given night, one of either Thompson or Hickson is having a good night, then I would give that player more minutes than the other. Throughout the season, you going to have one of your bigs get into foul trouble, or be injuried for a period of time. Thats when having quality big men on the bench is valuable. Those four guys can give you a variety of looks in the front court. You have three of them that can play Center, and three of them that can play PF. Thats a nice luxury to have.

Now if there's a problem because of Westphal not being able to make up his mind, you don't change the players, you change the coach.
