2022 Summer League Open Thread (non-Kings games)

Jones and Metu were both free agent signings. It's possible that their success and Woodard and Ramsey's lack of success helped motivate the decision to forego using those picks at all this year and instead keep roster spots open in case another Metu or Jones becomes available. So many people are acting like this #37 pick is a big deal, it's not. I think it's been about 15 years in a row that some first round rated prospect is available to us, we pass on them, fans freak out, and then they're forgotten about within a year. Monte seems to prefer taking chances on develepmental prospects who are already in the NBA as minimum contract free agents or trading second round picks at the deadline for role players who fill a need. Both of those avenues seem like they have a higher chance of successfully landing a player who will help the team than the second round of the draft does.
It would be really nice if you could have 3-4 instead of 2 2-way deals. I understand the PA probably doesn't want this because they want their guys on guaranteed deals, but as it is we have two guys on two ways so I feel like drafting someone at 37 and then giving them a guaranteed deal isn't necessarily a better way to go than scooping up guys who have fallen off their 2 ways or are otherwise entertaining league minimum deals but have proven they can play 20-30 games if needed.

I have a feeling that as Vlade's mass accumulation of 2nd rounders drop off we'll see a more traditional 1 2nd rounder picked each year and put on a 2-way for a 2 year development cycle. But I agree, during summer league these 2nd rounders are hot stuff but 3-4 months from now we'll have forgotten most of their names.

Up until, this season, I've had absolutely 0 problem with how we've dealt with our developmental program. Woodard, Ramsey, King, Metu, Jones, Queta. We'd been taking shots and Monte found 2 pretty good bench guys in Metu/Jones. To say we hadn't "hit" is just being results-oriented with how high variance 2nd rounders are whether they turn out or not.

But not even giving a shot at 37 or 48 if Vezenkov never comes over is very bleh and bad process. It'd be one thing if we still had Ramsey/Woodard/King taking up roster slots, but we cleared them out. Your back-end 13-17 contracts should always be young guys you're developing.

And ironically, the best guy out of the bunch - Jones - is long gone. The idea is to get a gem in the 2nd round and actually have him play significant minutes for your team. The cupboard is bare.

Yeah, especially when he's picking them in the 2nd round.:D

Same principles. Jones and Metu were young guys on the verge of flaming out of the NBA. King wasn't a rookie last year either. The idea is to identify talent that's been under-utilized, no matter what form that is in (2nd round, UDFA, disappointing FRP's like Metu/Jones).

So Keon and Vezenkov (if he comes over) would be great examples of that to me.

Man, Ivey just pops off the screen.

And he’s undercut on a three, and his ankle is taken out. At least I can stop watching and being sad now.

11 points in 5 minutes. Looking absolutely electric. Impacting the game every time he touched the ball.

Chet and Jabari have both looked sorta bad tonight coming off the Paolo and Keegan showing earlier today.

Chet playing too selfishly, missed an easy go ahead pass to Williams. Gotta make that pass. Giddey building brick homes. With his size and penetration, just slow that shot down a tick.

Tari's looked really good today but all the rookies in this game tonight side from him have looked bad.
