2022 Summer League Open Thread (non-Kings games)

Lol that was a “it’s 11 o’clock and we’re ready to go home” possession right there.

Running clock, please?

Ivey looks to be a better playmaker than a lot of his critics tried to lead us to believe. Some ugly turnovers but put a bunch of passes right where they needed to be, and seems willing to do it.

Whoever scheduled this game deserves to be fired lmao (not that it matters to me as someone in Japan)

Summer league really is a basketball nerds dream. All the top prospects, non stop hoops, star appearances and I don’t think it’s that expensive at least I’ve heard that. And for a midnight game, looks like a decent crowd

First impression of Ivey…. Dude is dying to make highlight plays on every possession. He will be extremely fun, but curious if he ever rings it in a bit to actually be an effective player. Seems to be the polar opposite of Keegan. That’s not a criticism, but curious if the “boring” and efficient player is just more McNair’s type.

I thought Jaden looked about as advertised. Top shelf athlete, elite first step, good secondary playmaker and some questionable defense and decision making that need to be reigned in a bit. He will look better with more space in real games. Still, I feel good about our choice and think Keegan landed in the perfect place to maximize his impact

Yea, seems like he wants to dazzle and prove something in a way that may only be great for individual stats, but, that's just based on the very little i've seen. Looks talented but idk about "star" - time will tell.

For someone with so much athleticism, he spent the entire second half standing in the corner. He had a few nice passes and a nice finish late in the game, but he mostly stood in the corner. I didn’t see the first half, so this is second half observation only. So if this board is going to say Keegan can be too passive or that he floats to the corner, it needs to acknowledge the same of Ivey, because that is literally all he did for about 10 straight minutes of game time.

I actually like Ivey. I think he will fit nicely in Detroit AND that we will be happy with Keegan as well. I just think it is funny that we pick nits on our guy but ignore the same thing on Ivey. A lot of it is the summer league dynamic, but you can’t watch the second half and not say Ivey was damn near invisible.

He had 12/4/3 at half, so he was 8/2/3 in 16 second half minutes (including 4 free throws).

I think Ivey will be good for the Pistons, he does have a lot of potential. I'm still glad we got Murray over him, but I think it's funny reading through some of the comments in this thread.

Ivey: 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 turnovers, and zero defense. "Wow, so sad we missed out. so athletic and fast! So much potential!"

Murray: 26 points, 8 rebounds, 0 assists or turnovers, good defense, and all in 4 less minutes. "So boring. Don't know if he can defend in the NBA. He just stands in the corner!"

To be clear, i would of been fine with either, but i preferred Murray. I just find the duality of the commentary amusing.

20/6/6 kid passes the eye test, and I’m sad again.

I love this board. Keegan goes 24/9 in his debut, and the reaction is a stifled yawn. “Bare minimum.” “This is summer league, he should be dominating.” “He is too passive.” We pick every bit of his game and try to find all the ways he can disappoint us.

And then Ja (sorry, Jaden) goes out and gets 20/6/6, with a lot of sloppiness and a really passive second half, and it’s like “damn, eye test man. Dude is legit. We messed up passing on him.”

Not sure why we always have to go out of our way to knock our own guys and act like every other guy is an all star.

LOL. We posted the same thing at the same time. It is so true.

Meh. Even after a few games from Murray and Ivey, I still would pass on both. They're about where I had them pegged. Both have warts. Didn't realize the only way to fan was to support your team's player regardless of his play/weaknesses.

Haha that’s not what anyone is saying either. Why does it have to be such extremes? Again, no one is saying you have to champion and Stan every decision and player on the Kings ignorantly. Some people don’t always have a negative view of them either.

I mean, you'd expect great numbers from top picks. They're playing against good players, but still mostly non-NBA players after all. If you're a top pick, there is a bare minimum expectation for you to flash in SL. The positives that dudes show, you kinda just expect that. The weaknesses are more revealing.

All the top 5 picks showed enough in their first games - none of them look like busts. That + translatable skills are all I’m lookin for.

Keegan showed the abilities to shoot off movement (which is a rare thing for a 22-year-old 6’8” rookie), the ability to play perimeter defense (lots to improve, but most dudes this big are not that effective in their first summer league), his grab and go skills are impressive, and he scores on all three levels. Plus he looks like a great teammate that could play in a number of different lineups (flexibility).

That is the outline of a really good player that does not come off the floor during the playoffs.

Ivey showed his burst is next-level, that his 3 point shot might translate, that his passing will be legit for a combo guard, and that his defense needs a ton of work (like almost all rookie guards coming into the league). Detroit should be stoked to slot this dude next to Cade. The fit next to Fox would be really awkward (this season)!

I wanted Ivey because I saw more star potential than Murray. But I have loved what I have seen from Murray. His BBIQ is stellar. Monte is building an extremely high BBIQ team (Huerter, Murray, Davion, and Sabonis - that all have positional size or strength). That could turn into something worth watching.

You would have passed in both? After 4 combined SL games? That is even better than nitpicking Murray and praising Ivey for the sane flaws. Saving this post! Captain hot take doesn’t want either Murray or Ivey after seeing their first SL games.

I skipped the first game, watched the second game where he stunk, and the crowdless game 3 scrimmage was kind of just background noise. Hopefully he shows me game 1 stuff whenever our next game is.

There was one series that stood out where he hit a turnaround, played good defense with Queta, then nailed a three but other than that struggling to remember anything … meanwhile that burst from Ivey there all night long.

I will say I don’t think he’ll be an outright bust… and I’m not rooting against him like I was Bagels. So I’m not as bad as the past. Lol

Save it, dude. I would've passed both then and now.

I think that’s something everyone no matter where they fall on the pick wars can agree on.

In his limited play, he didn't look like a jumbo wing. And I had a hard time trying to figure out who/where he was on the floor. Nothing popped. Plus Dame's comments when asked about him and you could just see Dame trying to find something nice to say. Lolzzzz.

I got the feeling from that interview that Dame has some serious issues with his work ethic and tried to be as nice about it as possible but just couldn't bring himself to give some positive generic canned answer about him.
