2011 NBA Draft Combine - Discussion

Since the results of the combine and other tidbits will become available over the next day or two, it seems like a good idea to have a thread where everything can be discussed. Usually a lot of trivial threads spring up around this time, better to have a thread where everything can be kept together.

Anyone know when the first pieces of information should be released?

Are these workouts likely to end up on Youtube? If so, let's post them especially for the guys in the projected 3-15 draft area.

From what I remember of last year, pretty much all the interviews with the top prospects will be put up on youtube, as well as some clips from the workouts. The main workout videos usually come from within the organisation when team workouts begin, though, and are posted onto youtube.

Some very interesting/funny tweets recently:

Iman Shumpert apparently really stood out amongst the PG groups by being so much bigger and more athletic. People really liked him.

Lots of good buzz about Kenneth Faried today. Skill-level looks poor but everyone loves his energy-level and athleticism. "He's an animal."

Here's where things get really interesting:

Travis Leslie made some very brash statements, scoffing at the Tony Allen comparisons. "I'm a better player than Tony Allen. A better scorer"

Marshon Brooks apparently rubbed some people the wrong way by talking about himself in the 3rd person the entire interview.

I was surprised Kanter worked out - good on him. He looked polished and had a bounce to his step. Definitely isn't as ground bound as his Hoop Summit video shows (he had a back injury) even though he still dominated.

This type of setting is horrible for a guy like Faried and his skillset, yet he showed up, hustled, and did his thing. Looked pretty short, though. Still, he's my favorite player in this draft on pure energy, hustle, and grit.

Wanted to also mention Chris Singleton stood out in the SF group. Just physically superior to the rest. You can tell he could be an awesome wing/weak-side defender in the NBA.

Doubt his ball skills are that great, but he will fill a niche with a team.

Chad Ford mentioned Biyombo could go as high as #2 to the Wolves because they like him. The panel went crazy on why that shouldn't/wouldn't happen, but this is Kahn we're talking about. Just takes one GM, as they say lol. Nobody thinks they need a guy like Derrick Williams, so who knows, maybe if Biyombo is available at 7, the Kings draft him and swap with the Wolves with another player or cash or pick thrown in.

JaJuan Johnson is going to make a team happy in the late first round. Guy has talent and is long, but skinny. Give him a few years to fill out and you may have a decent NBA player. Nice touch from the perimeter too.

That would be phenomenal. We should start going around to different forums and start kicking up rumors about Biyombo's "amazing passing ability" and whisper words like "mana from heaven." Derrick Williams just isn't a fit there in Minny, and I firmly believe that the pick is up for grabs. I hope Petrie defies his own history and makes a deal.

I hope the Kings look into interviewing guys like Faried, to account for the possibility of trading down. And guys like Williams, in case they move up. Really shouldn't be resting on their laurels for this one.

I like Faried as a player .. but not really for this team. He reminds me of a player we already have who has a much better offensive game. Jason Thompson. Both big time energy/effort guys .. both workers, and fantastic rebounders. They both appear to be good team/chemistry guys. ( I know JT is, Faried appears to be the same way ) And while Faried seems to be a better defender than JT was in college, Thompson has been getting better defensively, and actually started to look very good towards the end of last season.

Again, I do like him .. he is fun to watch for sure, but I dont think he is what this team is looking for right now.

I assume all the college/draftniks will be checking out this thread. Accordingly college/draftniks, CHECK YOUR PMs -- I may have sent you something. Need to talk to you.

I hear ya', but I think Faried has a extraordinary ability to rebound, the all-time NCAA leader in rebounds, and every team can use rebounds and his energy off the bench. What's wrong with having Dally, Cousins, JT, and Faried? Kings can fill in their other needs (SF, PG) through FA and trades.

Maybe this wasn't intended for me, but I didn't get a PM.

On another note, Leslie is denying that he said he's a better player than Allen. DX got it on tape, though.

Singleton is fairly well skilled, and might be the best defensive player in the entire draft. Biggest weakness was his outside shot, but he really improved it this season.

Great line from one of the scouts today at the combine while watching players go through shooting drills. " Cone 1A is playing some great defense "

On that note - They interviewed Bryan Colangelo during the combine and he kind of insinuated that forcing everyone to work out will be talked about with the new CBA.

That would be fantastic. NBA teams shouldnt have to use so much guesswork .. one bad pick can send a franchise back for years. If your going to pay a guy millions of dollars right out of college .. you should at least be able to work those guys out against other players your considering.

Don't all players do the measurements? Can't remember any guys who sat out the measurements in years past, but I could be wrong.

There always seems to be a handful of players that don't get measured. Often times it's the int'l guys that don't feel like making the trip to the combine. Thompson sat out the measurements IIRC.

Kanter looked very smooth and more athletic than I thought and If we draft a pg or sf in first round Jeremy Tyler looks like an intriguing prospect he looked smooth with his shot and moved very well. I do believe his immaturity is a concern but a value pick in the second round.

Re: Tyler. I would not use an early 2nd on him, and I'd want him to stay overseas if I drafted him.

He definitely is worth it who else in that second round has as much potential as him he moved very well shot excellent his mechanics are fairly good. Its obvious he made a horrible decision by leaving his junior year of high school, but to be honest I think he might of been a little bit manipulated in that situation. One thing is for sure if he would have stayed in school and went to college he would at least be in the 1st round if not the first 15. In my opinion that makes him a steal the second round is meant for projects. Now if he is there with are second 2nd round pick we have to pull the trigger.

He didn't even stand out in Japan. There are always quality players to be had in the 2nd, so you don't throw away an early 2nd on a huge long shot. You throw away a late 2nd on someone like that because those pick are virtually worthless.
