what was the last movie you watched?

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Sudden Death -- Jean Claude Van Damme fighting a woman wearing a giant penguin mascot costume in an industrial kitchen? Zamboni related deaths? Powers Boothe overacting? Yes please! One of my guilty pleasure favorites since it first came out in 1995 and tonight was the first time in at least five years that I've caught it from the beginning. Good times.

See? Pretentious. :p

The Edge -- 90s survival movie back from the post Silence of the Lambs Anthony Hopkinis revival where they kept on trying to figure out how to bank on an aging pudgy guy having star name power. Solid flick though, and got a great acting performance...from Bart the famous acting Bear.

Made of Honor -- ok, a chick flick, I intentionally watched, and get this, I largely liked it. Of course down the stretch fell into the absolutely 100% cliched romcom plot trap, but it was actually quite funny through most of it (a marriage to a tropy wife is great), and the central problem -- guy's female best friend is getting married, + he suddenly realizes he does not want to lose her and tried to undermine the marriage from within -- resonated.

Changeling -- definitely a high quality flick as you might guess from the people involved (Eastwood, Jolie) but lacking in real excitement or kick. Kind of dragged, like they wanted to show us everythhing that happened historically (it was a true story) rather than focusing the narrative to make it into stronger movie.

Penelope -- wasn't sure what this was but was intrigued by the level of the cast (Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon) for what must have been a minor movie. Well...turned out to be a fable basically, maybe aimed at kids given the message (love yourself for what you are), and featuring a girl born with a pig's nose (the family was cursed you see) looking for love. You know how to tell if a girl is cute? Glue a pig's nose on her face and if you say, "hey, I'd still kiss her", then she's cute (either that or you're into bestiality). Christina passed this test. Also, BTW, featured one of the best acting performances by a little person I have seen. So much so the fact he was a little person was almost forgotten about (given the film's message, probably intentional too).

My wife wanted to watch Twilight, so I watched it with her. Definitely a chick flick with vampires, pretty poor special effects (and very few of them). Not sure why this has such a big following.....

My daughter went and saw the movie. She is a huge fan of the books, she hated the movie! My son who didn't read the books, thought the movie was eh, ok. I think the following is based more on the books then the movie.

Watched Australia last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nothing particular earth-shattering about the plot or the acting, but it's well done and fun and entertaining. Truly reminiscent of some of my favorite Westerns from way back in the days of Gary Cooper...

Great movie but kind of racist.
I actually bought it because I like films that deal with race. Still, I wasn't really too impressed. It was OK, but nothing really that makes you think. Films like American History X, and even Crash, are much better, I think. Have you any suggestions for films you think I may like in that mould?

Mean Girls --- My dirty little secret. No matter how many times I watch this movie I laugh throughout every time.

Airplane! --- So cheesy and cliche, but awesome in every way. As almost everyone should know.

Outside Providence -- the Farrely Brothers followup to Something About Mary, and having seen it now maybe unfairly maigned. Had some very funny moments, and an unusual amoount of insight into a couple of different classes of people (directionless kids and oldschool blue collar working class guys). Maybe kind of got stuck between drama and comedy, but a lot fo good stuff I thought.

Not sure this warrants its own thread but as a heads up for KingsFans movie lovers who rely on Netflix for movies they are jacking their Blu-Ray fees up quite a bit (I didn't even realize they had started a surcharge in the first place).

Wifey and I are definitely dropping our service down a few notches as we tend to keep movies on the shelf for too long as it is.

Committed -- some wannabe quirky almost road type flick that I had never heard of starring Heather Graham, Luke Wilson and Casey Affleck. It did not go well, Heather is hot but could not carry the movie, and its just kind of flaccid and bores instead of intrigues with the overt quirks. Doesn't help you empathize with the lead character either as you graduially realize that she is in fact nuts. As an aside, the lead singer of Everclear randomly shows up playing a car thief.

also

Drive Thru -- everybody here seriously has to see this movie. Its that good. Its on On Demand right now. Don't miss out! :D

The Orphanage: A Spanish movie (from Spain), but produced by Guillermo del Toro (of Pan's Labyrinth). It's entirely in subtitles (unless you speak Spanish), but is otherwise an excellent film. I'm not typically scared by horror movies, but I'll be honest, I was on the edge of my seat for parts of this one. A classy horror film, it doesn't rely on blood and guts or any scream queens, it's just genuinely creepy. The acting is pretty good, and the story, while nothing new or original, is delivered in a way that feels fresh and different (probably because most horror films today rely on carnage and torture-porn). I'd give it four and a half stars. It's on Netflix 'watch instantly' if you're a Netflix subscriber.

saw adventureland tonight...

beautifully crafted and understated comedy-drama...

truly heartfelt, and the script rarely attempted to crowbar the laughs out of the audience with crudeness...

it was just funny in the way that life can be funny...

i highly recommend it...

One frozen yogurt, showing of Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D, and burger at Red Robin later and we have one happy family. :)

The movie wasn't *quite* as good as some of the others perhaps, but still a pretty good movie. The 3D effects were pretty decent and the show has bits and pieces that pay homage to other sci-fi movies. Somewhat predictable in parts, but I liked it.

Frontier(s) -- A french slasher flick! And I think I have finally found a genre perfectly suited for French cinema's typically dim view of the human condition. Totally derivative (cannibalistic Nazis!) but pretty well done actually.

Tamara -- just in a horror mood. This was entirely average in all ways though, except that I just added somebody else to my pretty girls lists. Well that and I liked the revenge the witch in the movie dropped on the two stereotypical jerk high school guys.

This weekend I watched the last half of Baby Mama and some made for TV movie shot in Sacramento and Folsom called Gone But Not Forgotten. Ironically the book it was based on actually took place in Portland. If I see a hometown landmark odds are I'll watch for a little while and this was not bad for made for tv schlock despite the miserable performance by Brooke Shields.

Role Models -- Hilarious. Also confirms that the adorableness of Paull Rudd, on whom I've been mega-crushing ever since Clueless, continues to grow. I didn't particularly want to see this one based on the previews, but gave in after several recommendations and am very happy I did. Worth checking out.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan -- ok, maybe I was just in a goofy mood, but I laughed hard at this one. It helped greatly that I am almost impossible to offend, because they were absolutely relentless in trying to do so. The premise is thin as cardboard, its completely ridiculous and over the top from the opening frame, I don't even normally think Sandler is that funny, and its parodying of all things the Israeili/Palestinian conflict -- haha right? But I laughed, so what are you going to say? Note: despite the silliness this is not for the kids.

P.S. Definitely see the unrated version in this case -- this is a movie that is at its best being wildly offensive (Apatow was one of the writers), so I'm thinking the PG-13 theatrical cut would be tame and lose some edge.
