what was the last movie you watched?

I watched the 1927 silent film "Metropolis". Interesting movie on several fronts - I wanted to see this classic, but also to see the sci-fi set design of the time, some (unanticipated) near-nudity in a movie of that era, and just a movie from that era in general.

Only problem is I was so darn tired last night I dozed off a few minutes at a time before the end - but this was not a reflection on the movie itself.

Somehow I think this is a movie GGG would enjoy.
Indeed I do. Or, at least, did. Haven't seen it since I was pretty young.

Oh, BTW, I also have tickets to the 5pm showing of Watchmen today. Never read the story, but it is Guy's Movie Night tonight, so I went and got tickets yesterday.
hope you're not disappointed, i rather enjoyed the graphic novel and hope the movie does it justice.
I went to the midnight show last night. The movie is... amazing. It's been about 13 or 14 years since read the novel, so I couldn't recognize any changes, but the film definitely does it justice. And it's so nice to see a comic book movie that fully embraces an R rating. Haven't seen many do that since From Hell.

I wouldn't say amazing myself, but I thought it was pretty good. The other 4 I was with didn't care for it, but what do they know? ;)

I think the big blue male "appendage" was a bit much at times, and there was some violence that really was just a *bit* more than necessary (the scene with the killer of the little girl, for instance), but overall I really enjoyed it.

And I really want to encourage people to leave their little kids at home when going to "adult" films (in this case, an R rated movie with a lot of violence, an anatomically correct blue man that can be 100-ft tall, a semi-long sex scene (not that I am complaining, mind you), and lots of blood and exploding bodies). Really. You are screwing up your kids for the cost of an occasional sitter. Knock it off.

Went and saw Watchmen last night.

I got out of it exactly what I was expecting. It was a great movie. As a movie it could not have been done a whole lot better. Unfortunately the Watchmen was concieved as a graphic novel and they did alot of things with that medium that you just can't translate onto the big screen.

Some things are just meant to be read, not necessarily seen. Some of the concepts sort of conflict with your sensibilities when they are actually brought to "life".

Hard movie to watch if you have certain expectations about it. Doesn't make it any less excellent if you just take it at face value though.

Side note: people are becoming less and less affected by senseless carnage. This movie has none (senseless carnage), because all of the sex and violence are a reflection of real human emotion. Nonetheless they had to change some of the killing scenes (which were made less effective psychologically as a result), specifically to keep this movie from looking like a rip off of SAW or Mad Max. Movies like SAW are destroying human emotion and my enjoyment of certain pieces of iconic pop culture.

One other note on the Watchmen I forgot to mention before - I am very happy with the fight scenes. None of this chop-chop-chop-chop shakey-cam video where you can't follow what is going on. Very well done! I could tell who was doing what, and it was well choreographed.

I watched Children of Huang Shi... I hadn't heard of it before grabbing it at the video store. A compelling story based on events that actually happened in China in 1937.

Watchmen, there were little kids in the theatre. A close up of Mr Manhattan brought out some giggles, then I told mentally told myself to shut up.

X-Files: I Want to Believe -- not bad really. Took some heat, but its pretty much a solid character driven thriller. Problem just was that it was not terribly ambitious. When you are reviving something 10 years after its prime, you would think you would break out the fireworks, but this just played it very close to the vest. Think they need another one to wrap up the series mythology, but given the lukewarm reception of this one, don't know if they will get it.

have you read the comic? i think they changed that segment for the movie, but i really enjoyed how they did it in the comic. the rorschach chapter is actually my favorite.

Babylon A.D. -- you know, there could have actually been something here. This movie was famously chopped by something like 70 minutes by the studio, and you could feel it, in particular during a completely nonsensical ending which wrapped up nothing. But the dark, grim future was well realized and they had some great ideas and set pieces that just went undeveloped.

Age of Innocence -- ok...33 minutes of Age Of Innocence, by which point Scorcese had as usual already bored me to the point of tears twice over and I gave up.

So I switched over and watched a completely standard 90s thriller starring Madeleine Stowe called Blink, which was decent enough (and Stowe gave a strong performance in the lead) although a bit annoying with the hallucination stuff.

Funny - I saw Blink while at Chico State and liked the music. Just so happens that The Drovers, who did much of the music in that show, were giving a free concert at the awesome little outdoor amphitheatre on campus not long after - it was a great show. Then I bought several of their CDs, but they didn't sound as good as the live show......

Finally saw Madagascar 2... a lot of the humor sure seemed like it would have been over the head of the target audience but I still enjoyed it, and will be humming "Move it, move it, move it" for a couple of days.

Literally just finished watching The Changeling. Angelina Jolie did an incredible job and I cannot imagine how she lost out on the Oscar. Frightening story for a couple of reasons, among them that although it's 70+ years later you have to wonder if things have actually gotten any better with the Los Angeles law enforcement community...

The Fountain -- puts the fartsy in the artsy. A good test of your pretentiousness. If you actually liked this thing, or better yet if you just want to say you did so you can feel superior, you're pretentious.

Nights in Rodanthe -- have no idea what I expected here. What I got was a pretty well acted weeper class eye-rolling melodrama completely lacking in subtlety.

In my defense, though, I didn't love the film. Don't know that I even feel the need to sit through it again, actually, but definitely liked a few moments.
Aronofsky may be the only director for whom I can say I really liked all his work but have no desire to watch repeatedly.

Body of Lies - Well acted but something kept annoying me. I don't know if it was the camera work or the direction, but there was something technical that just didn't seem to make it easy to watch.

Sudden Death -- Jean Claude Van Damme fighting a woman wearing a giant penguin mascot costume in an industrial kitchen? Zamboni related deaths? Powers Boothe overacting? Yes please! One of my guilty pleasure favorites since it first came out in 1995 and tonight was the first time in at least five years that I've caught it from the beginning. Good times.
