Yi Willing To Sit Out Entire Season

Im not quite sure why they even took Yi when they just traded for Villanueva. Even assuming you put Villa at SF, they could have easily taken B Wright who is just as good, if not a somewhat safer pick because hes american. They had a lot of options but still took him. They had to know he didnt want to play there, clearly if you arent invited to the workouts he doesnt want to get picked by you. Whether or not this turns out to be a good pick or a huge mistake, remains to be seen.

I agreed. Bogut and Villanueva are both young, why draft another big that you didn't invited to the workouts to? Just forget about the fact that he's not an American for a second here. I don't understand what was the intention of drafting a guy who might not like you (or his handler doesn't) and you have a young rising star who plays the same position?

There should be some form of a penalty for holding out like Yi is doing. I would welcome him here in Sac, but he certainly isn't doing the right thing. Well... It's really his handlers, moreso than him.

and if he forces his way out of Milwaulkee his handlers ARE going to "win". He'll go somewhere they want him to be. Potentially make some team much better. I vote for that team to be us rather than the Lakers, Warriors, or any other West Coast rival.

That, to me, is the real kicker. I don't generally support this type of game playing, and technically don't "support" it now, but... circumstances being what they are... think I could get over it in this case. Or, at least, I could get over it a lot easier than I could get over watching one of the other acceptable teams snap him up if their kamikaze bargaining techniques are successful.

If there were any evidence to suggest that Yi, himself, was just being a whiny brat I'd probably have a different attitude, but that's not the vibe I'm getting.

I don't really care about whether or not he's doggin' the Bucks. If he wants to come here and it would improve our team to acquire him via trade, then I say let's "git er done."

IMHO I would venture to say that the decisions made and being made are motivated by more political reasons than basketball ones. However, that is all irrelevant.

Those argueing that there should be a penalty, you are right and there is. If he doesn't sign with them, if I understand correctly, to re-enter the draft he can not play professional basketball for a year. For most, that is as good a deterrent as would ever be needed. Remove a player from the court for a year and his stock will fall. If he (or his handlers) are willing to do that, then by the rules of the CBA they can.

If you call a bluff, you better be sure that it is one.

Did Yao ever cause a big hoopla like this? Or are there actually chinese people in Texas?

Yi and his handlers seem like a pack of jerks...Its gonna be funny when after all this he busts out.

what a backhand to the face of the bucks franchise if he sits out the whole year to re enter the draft.

They're the idiots that ignored all his agent's warnings before the draft. They brought this on themselves, IMO they deserve to get backhanded for being so stupid.

LOL! Sorry, but that's outright laugh out loud funny.

The Bucks did exactly what they have the right to do as one of the 30 teams in the National Basketball Association. If our team wasn't tangentially involved in this whole mess - although it's becoming less and less likely Yi would come here anyway - I can't imagine anyone protesting what Milwaukee did.

As far as him re-entering the draft next year, I would think the Bucks would retain his draft rights forever. Much as we held Dejan Bodiroga's rights. Yi entered and participated in the 2007 draft. He was, in fact, drafted by one of the teams in the NBA. I don't think he can simply have a "mulligan" on this...at least not without a long, convoluted court case probably lasting until long after he's ready for retirement.

No he didn't and that's what's different this time. There was hoopla but it came from the Chinese government and the CBA. At the time, they were worried Yao would defect like Wang ZhiZhi and hence didn't want to lose him from the national team. Thus they basically demanded that part of Yao's salary go to the Chinese government as a way of keeping some level of control over Yao. There were issues about Chinese people in Texas but Yao was never the one who objected. In fact, Houston really doesn't have a very big Chinese population (much of the Asian population is Vietnamese) Once the Rockets hammered out a contract, the Chinese government didn't really care that there wasn't a huge Chinese population.

In Yi's case, Yi and his agent are controlling the situation. The CBA and Chinese government haven't been that vocal this time around and unlike Yao who repeatedly insisted during the whole process that he wanted to play in Houston, Yi isnt making those types of assurances.

Hell Yao called out Yi and told him to just deal with it in a Chinese newspaper. This is a different situation. Yao was at the mercy of the Chinese government that repeatedly interfered with the whole process. Yi is basically channeling the spirit of Steve Francis and trying to whine his way out of Milwaukee.

Truly pathetic...

If I understand the rules correctly, the difference between Bodiroga and Yi is that Bodiroga went back to Europe to play pro ball, and Yi is apparently threatening to go home and sit on his couch and eat Cheetos for a year, just for the right to re-enter the draft; I believe that, if you don't play any pro ball of any level anywhere, then you're entitled to re-enter the draft scot-free.

But, for the love of God, I hope he doesn't get away with it...

I thought he already played basketball (summer league with his nat. team)after he was drafted. So how can he re enter the draft next year?

Playing for his national team isn't considered professional, I don't believe.

You know, the more I hear about this AND about his agent, who is also playing very hard ball in his representation of Matt Barnes, the more I think this guy is NOTHING like Yao Ming, except for the nationality. If even Yao is publicly calling him out, I want nothing to do with either Yi or Fegan.

I gotta disagree with you a little bit on this one. You're right the Bucks did do what they had a right to do, BUT now Yi is doing what he has a right to do. The Bucks knew that there was a chance he wouldn't play for them, they knew that there were was a rule in place where he could sit out an entire year and re-enter the draft if he so choosed. They knew both of these facts and still decided to gamble on him. If it doesn't work out it's all on them. They rolled the dice and lost (well not yet, but if he doesn't play, then they lost).

Is it a childish and A-holish thing for Yi to do? Yep, absolutely. But he is playing by the rules. The NBA draft rules allow for a player to sit out professional ball for an entire year and then re-enter the draft. He isn't breaking any rules. Now I don't think it's right and I think the NBA really needs to change this and make it so once you are drafted by a team they have your rights no matter what, no getting out of it. But until they do change that Yi isn't breaking any rules and the Bucks were stupid to gamble on him. It's really hard not give the Bucks the majority of the blame on this one IMO since they knew Yi didn't want to play for them and they knew he had a legal way to do it.

As a fan of a small market team, which I assume you are, you better be careful here. For a long time no one wanted to come play in Sacramento, either, and I'm afraid those days could be creeping back. So let's not get ahead of ourselves on this one. If there's a precedent for players just blowing off percieved "unattractive" locales, this one could come and hurt us, too.

Exactly. It's one of those "be careful what you wish for" or think is okay scenarios.

2000 Census

Harris County Total Population: 3,400,578
Chinese: 34,673

Houston Total Population: 1,953,631
Chinese: 24,001

Sacramento County Total Population: 1,223,499
Chinese: 30,455

Sacramento Total Population: 407,018
Chinese: 19,425

Yes, there are Chinese in Texas for many of the same reasons as California originally: railroads and mining

I suspect this loophole was a compromise between the league and players union. On the surface it actually looks fair until you bring in the diminsion of the "national teams" and the support they give allowing a player to potentially remain in the spotlight, continue basketball training and still re-enter the draft for a more desirable location. If they do anything, they might want to take another look at this "national team" angle.

we all know you don't like Yi VF21. diff. between dejan and yi is.. dejan continued to play professional team thats why we kept his rights. yi or his handlers stated he will sit out a year, not paly professional basketball to re enter the draft. if the bucks GM is totally on crack and doesn't understand english, they need to move him and get some kind of compensation. otherwise, they'll be left on the curb like orlando w/ the fran vasquez fiasco. lol, i find it rather funny the bucks are trying to hardball in this situation. it's not like this guy they drafted is an american college player who will have limited options. it's not like they were invited to see this guy workout. it's not like there weren't any warning signs that said better not ******** draft me cuz i won't play for you.

It's not a matter of liking him or not liking him. I quite frankly don't know enough about him to form an opinion one way or another about personal preference.

My points stand. You want to side with him because you think he might end up as a King. I'm saying I think he's trying to manipulate the NBA into doing what HE wants as opposed to all the other people who were drafted who are going to the teams who picked them. Why exactly should he be allowed to have a do-over?

Sorry, but I don't think people should bend their principles based on whether or not it can benefit them.

Yeah they did. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's "the best option" for them nor would guarantee a happy ending. I still don't get why they picked Yi when they got Villanueva.

But, for the love of God, I hope he doesn't get away with it...

He probably won't. He's no OJ, he's not big enough a celebrity in the USA to get away. :p

You must not have actually read what I wrote. I specifically said the NBA needs to change this rule.

>My points stand. You want to side with him because you think he might end up as a King.

who wouldn't? the guy clearly is talented. i'm not siding with him bc sac is one of his possible destinations. the topic at hand is whether it is right for him to hold out although the bucks selected him.

>I'm saying I think he's trying to manipulate the NBA into doing what HE wants as opposed to all the other people who were drafted who are going to the teams who picked them.

NOT the FIRST time it happened and probably won't be the last.

>Why exactly should he be allowed to have a do-over?

because its in the rules? ;) they have rules that you can be selected in the draft by any team that wants you. it also says you can sit out a year w/o pro basketball to re enter the draft. he's playing by the rules so why should be crucified for that? it's NOT his fault the bucks selected him is it? LOL

>Sorry, but I don't think people should bend their principles based on whether or not it can benefit them.

see it however you like. this is a opinion based board and everybody has theirs. btw, if this did not happen.. i don't know how fun it would be to check on this board for kings updates. so far the kings have done absolutely NOTHING to get me excited about the upcoming season.

I am well aware that this is an opinion-based board. I didn't attack your opinion. You questioned mine and added the personal "we all know you don't like Yi, VF" zinger. I responded.

EDIT: One more thing? You keep saying this isn't the first time this has happened but I cannot remember another situation where a player has been drafted, refused to report and sat out a year for the next year's draft. And, as far as idiots demanding trades go, I'm not real impressed with the two you did cite - Stevie Franchise and Kobe have been prima donnas their entire careers. They are the EXCEPTIONS, not the rule.

I'd rather have Hawes than Yi

I'm glad we got Hawes and not Yi. I think Hawes is more NBA ready than Yi. Yi does have many challenges. I understand where he is coming from. I think the warriors can easily trade Marco for Yi. Marco is more NBA ready and bay area is little Shanghai. In NBA communication and psychological support are important. Yi would have much more adjusting than Hawes in Sactown. Hawes just needs to keep working hard to build up quickness. We should send him to Germany to work out with Dirk's guy. I still have hope for Hawes if we can condition him up.

thanks for the correction. this isn't the first time when a player has demanded a trade because of location. how do these two being prima donnas relate to yi ? are you suggesting he is a prima donna also bc he or his handlers demanded a trade? i'm glad your not impressed bc neither am i. i'm citing them bc they have demanded a trade after being drafted by teams they did not want to report to and lastly nobody said they were the rule, you did.

Yi isn't demanding a trade. He hasn't even signed a contract. You're the one who brought up Stevie Franchise and Kobe as examples of players who had made such demands. That doesn't make it the norm.

Yi is an unproven commodity. Stevie Franchise and Kobe at least had solid reputations to at least base their demands upon.

Bottom line is I think this whole exchange has now become more about nitpicking so you can have the last word and I'll go find other, more interesting topics to discuss.

:)

hold on. If this sit-out-a-year thing is actually real, can't Fran Vasquez just re-enter a draft? Or did he sign a contract?

No, weenie boy has been playing professionally near mommy and daddy in Spain. The key apparently is the playing professionally part. Once you do that, you are locked into the team that drafted you.

This is an interesting game of chicken, in some ways I will be disappointed if either side blinks. Still interested in scooping up the fallout though if its the Bucks.

sorry VF21. :) i didn't mean it to be a pissing game. i hope it gets resolved by the time the season starts. i was hoping for this guy to fall to us at 10. however he didn't.. the bucks scooped him up knowing well it was going to be a challenging task to get him to sign. overall, i feel they shouldn't have taken the risk when there were other high profile talented players available. it's going to be very interesting when the season starts and nothing is resolved. if the bucks didn't take him in the draft, i'm pretty sure the bobcats would have selected this guy for Jrich.

fran said he wasn't ready for the nba after he was picked.. pretty messed up on their camp not to notify the magic of this before the selection was made. who knows if he'll ever come over now.

i'm with you on the yi bandwagon :) i hope there is some miracle that will bring yi to us for some of our garbage.
