Argentina has to be #1 after today's performance, since these rankings appear to only take the first games into consideration I guess they're ok, but really entirely based on reputation and past performance for the most part.

Local coverage of the world cup......

I am still in shock to see that the monarchs are pushing the USA vs Italy world cup match to tape delay. What a programing mistake. The bloody WNBA should be on tape delay. It's not like the world cup is only every four years. Sad to be a Sacramentan.

This is already being discussed in the current world cup thread, so I'm merging the two.

The Monarchs didn't push anything anywhere. The decision to broadcast the Monarchs game was made long before the world cup schedule was announced. Marcos Breton's rantings aside, contractual obligations ARE contractual obligations.

And it's only "sad to be a Sacramentan" if you're a soccer fan. Sometimes life sucks. You deal with it and you move on. If you're that desperate to see the soccer game live, it is being covered by Ch. 19.

Since both teams stand a good chance of winning their divisions there's no guarantee Argentina and Mexico will ever play. But I tend to agree with you if they were to meet in the second round.

Sad to see the Ivory Coast go out, if they didn't get such a tough group draw they would have advanced for sure. Ghana is probably the only other African team of any significance and they got the next toughest group and aren't likely to advance either.

The WNBA is still the WNBA. Big deal if they get pushed back to tape delay. The world cup only comes around every 4 years. And when the USA might only play three games it's a big deal soccer fan or not. So what if the Monarchs get pushed back. There is no way in hell that anyone can argue that the United States world cup team should be pushed off a live showing for the monarchs. It's just wrong that channel 10 decided to make such a lousy decision. And dont go on about contracts. The people at 10 in sacramento had prior knowledge that the WORLD CUP would be playing now. They just chose to be idiots and put the wrong sport on live tv. And to the people who dont like soccer, simple minds like simple sports.

The WC schedule was drawn on December 5, 2005. I am not sure when the WNBA sets it schedule but I believe the schedule was publically announced on December 21 of last year. In any event everyone should have seen this coming.

- Argentina was awesome. There's really nothing else to say about it. Serbia was disappointing, but this time it was near impossible to stop Argentina anyways.
- Netherlands played decent for one half, but Côte d'Ivoire dominated the second half. A combination of the (both physical and technical) strength of Côte d'Ivoire and Netherlands' poor play at the midfield, and some sloppy defending, gave Côte d'Ivoire lots of (semi) opportunities. I'm just glad Netherlands are through, but Côte d'Ivoire deserved at least a draw here. Oh well, it seems we're luckier under Van Basten than we've ever been.

Shame to see Côte d'Ivoire out already.

Re: "soccer is boring", everybody is entitled to an opinion. Nothing wrong with that. But backing it up with "it's true!" is nonsense.

The insults can stop RIGHT NOW.

This isn't a soccer site. It's a basketball site. We provide the "general" forum for people to discuss other sports but, just like everywhere else, you're required to keep it civil. If you have a problem with the scheduling of the Monarchs game and the US soccer match, contact News10.

If you want to discuss the matches, fine. This is the place. But if all you want to do is harp about one sport being better than another, that's already over and done.

Nothing to see here. Move along...

Thanks.

I stand corrected then, at least as far as when the schedules were available.

News10 IS covering both events. The soccer is slightly delayed. AND it is being shown live on Ch. 19.

Congrats on your side advancing Kajun. They have at times been fun to watch although the blatant dive that drew the yellow against the CdI player soured me a bit (part of the blame goes to the sucky ref who also gave questionable yellows to Robben and Drogba). Its unfortunate we probably won't see a meaningful match between Netherlands and Argentina since both sides are through.

I don't have a sacbee.com account so I can't post the link, but it looks like the US-Italy game is now live and the Monarchs are delayed.
Here you go:

U.S.-Italy to air live; Monarchs to be tape delayed
Bee Staff
Published 12:34 pm PDT Friday, June 16, 2006

News10 has reversed course and will air Saturday's World Cup soccer match between the United States and Italy live at 11:30 a.m.
In a posting on the station's Web site, News10 said it would tape delay the Monarchs home game against the Seattle Storm by approximately one hour. That game will now be shown at 2 p.m.

The station had originally planned to air the Monarchs game live, showing the U.S.-Italy match on tape delay. Margaret Mohr, the station's vice president of marketing, defended the original decision , telling the Bee that serving the local community was the priority.

Thanks. I was a bit annoyed by the way the referee gave out yellow cards left and right. The Mathijsen en Van Bommel yellow cards were absolutely unfair, and Robben was touched by a defender. But he dived a bit too spectacular, and the referee was aware of his reputation, so he got booked. When a Ivory Coast player got yellow for taking down a Van Persie who goes on the break, I think, by comparison, should have gotten Red instead. On the other side, Netherlands should have gotten a penalty against when Van Bronckhorst grabbed an Ivory Coast player in the first half.

EDIT: Turns out he gave out yellow to the wrong player as well at the end; he gave yellow to #6 (Landzaat) when actually Boulahrouz was the offender. Idiot.

Did you see Van Bommel trash talking to Drogba ("You can't play worth a dime!"), and Drogba retaliating by grabbing Van Bommel in the crotch? That was rather hilarious.

Also nasty was the Peter Crouch goal from England the other day, when he grabbed the long hair from his T&T opponent to keep him pinned to the ground, so he could head the ball himself. That goal should have been disallowed.

Re: Argentina-Holland, that match is insignificant in the sense that both sides have advanced. However, the winner of this match gets to be #1 and play what is probably Mexico, and the loser of this match will get to play Portugal. The consensus here is that Portugal is much stronger side, so we definitely want to play Mexico (hey, we even beat Mexico 2-1 in a friendly with our reserve squad). So...there is something big at stake here. But honestly, I'm not confident of our chances vs Argentina.

I can't stand Peter Crouch. It infuriated me to no end that he was the one to finally break through for England although that goal was all Beckham. Here is a video clip of the hair pull for any that missed it, completely obnoxious:

I missed the crotch grab. I got my HDTV/DVR setup in the basement now though so I can replay everything in glorious HD from here on out.

^^.....

He's big,
He's red (plays for Liverpool who play in red for those who arent familiar with the domestic game)
His feet stick out the bed
Peter Couch, Peter Crouch !! :D

Kajun, I hope your boys beat the Argies, because....well, they're the Argies and England have some unfinished business on that front.

England will play either Germany or Ecuador in the next round, I ought to want to avoid the host nation, but I really think we can beat them so 'bring 'em on'.

The last two england performances are meaningless we always raise our game for the decent teams, and with Rooney ready for the second round Im feeling confident. :D (famous last words!)

I thought the hair pulling was funny but then he does play for my fav. team so I'm biased. Grabbing the "package" should have got a flagrant 2, oops sorry wrong sport ;) and people say soccer isn't a contact sport.

You'd think if someone was going to post the crotch grab to youtube they would know the difference between Zokora and Drogba.

Just got done watching Portugal and Iran. There was contact made on Figo but would Iran have been given a PK if the play was on the other side? I seriously doubt it. For all the contact that's been made in the box this tournament that that play resulted in a game clinching PK really soured me. I can't help but feel that the Asian and African teams have been the victims of bad refereeing so far, but that could just be me. Even the commentary on ESPN has been totally biased against them, not that I expect competent commentary from American announce teams.

eta: To be fair I will say that the cleats in Figos face deserved a card.

Ok... after my little rant Ghana gets very favorable refereeing, although the late red given to Ujfalusi cost them a goal and a yellow card. If this result stands this could really shake things up and make for interesting 3rd matches, even if the US falls later today everyone will have lots to play for.

Yep, I really hope Ghana hold on and win.

It is a big ask for USA to win, or even draw against Italy, but if they can get a result it blows the whole Group E wide open.

Ok I am fan of the channel 5 KUVS on surewest. The spanish speaking channel knows how to put on a post/pre game show for soccer. It's like watching baywatch for pregames =P
