Are those the current cap holds? they were reduced alot in the new CBA.
I can't say for sure. I checked two different sources.
Edit: I just went and checked Shamsports and they have Greene at 4.2 mil, and JT at 7.5 mil, so pick your poison. Still a lot of money to have tied up.
I think you missed somebody on your count.
Guaranteed (9): Tyreke, IT, MT, Jimmer, Garcia, Salmons, Outlaw, Cousins, Hayes
Team Option (2): Honeycutt, Whiteside
Restricted (2): Thompson, Greene
Unrestricted (1): Williams
You're right that this could end up being a pretty boring summer. We've got arguably too many players locked up on a team that didn't do too well last year. We've got broke owners who really can't afford to amnesty a bad contract (which could be either Garcia/Salmons). And you've got a lot of young players that you don't want to give up on. Greene is probably a casualty. Williams is another possible casualty despite how well he played for us simply because of the numbers game. Too many guards! I really have no idea how the front office feels about Honeycutt - he sure didn't get much playing time even toward the end of the year, so he might be allowed to walk, but he comes very, very cheap so maybe not. Whiteside hasn't shown much yet, but with only two bigs under contract it would be hard to let him go.
But we're in a situation where if we bring back both of the cheap youngsters on team options (who play at positions we're thin at) and JT, that's 12 and our first-rounder makes 13. That's before considering T-Will and any possible free agents. So I almost think that we'll need to spend our second rounder on a stashable Euro prospect. Then, GP is going to have to work some magic. And it may take magic this year, given where we are.

I disagree with that one. The MLE is $5M or thereabouts. JT is totally and completely worth that, and mind you, is the second-best of only 4 big men on our roster. I wouldn't cry if we found a way to make JT our third big, but right now, he's a starter and it's not even a question. I expect he'll get something closer to $6-7M when all is said and done, and I think that's completely fair.
The QO may only be 2.5 mil, but the cap hold is 6 mil. JT's cap hold is 9 mil. So until both guys contracts or lack thereof is decided, the two of them would tie up a huge chunk of our cap space. Greene isn't important enough to tie up 6 mil in capspace.
Note: Thompson played for Rider, which is in New Jersey. He's from the that area. So he's an east coast guy. Last time I looked, there's a team there called the Nets that has a lot of money to spend. I think he would have a hard time passing on a big offer from them. Of course we can show our love and match. But if the amount is too big, I think he's gone. I hope not!
Ooh, good point, I'm positive they will renounce both guys if they find a legit target in FA, but they can always just outbid other teams considering the space they'll have.
We arte never major players in FA. FA is not an opportunity for the Kings so much as it is an opportuntity for us to lose guys we acquired through other means. We've had too many years of that for us to blithely relase our FAs just assuming we are going to sign somebody. Would we do it when we had an imminent deal on the way? Sure. But there's little doubt we'll enter FA with Jason's caphold in place. Any other path would be foolish.
That's why you would see what your prospects are in free agency. The Kings can simply withdraw their QO if they need to clear space to sign someone else. The good thing about this free agency class is there might be some really nice SF's out there, so if it means you cut Jason Thompson to clear space for Nic Batum, Gerald Wallace, or maybe AK47 again, you do it. May not even have to, who knows. I think the draft will decide quite a bit.
y does everyone keep saying honeycutt and whiteside have team options? look at the rotoworld link. It says both arent free agents til 2014-2015 season

Well, because other sites don't say the same thing as rotoworld, that's why.
Hoopshype, which has been the best (IMO) salary site since ShamSports went into hibernation mode has both Honeycutt and Whiteside on team options. However, ShamSports, in their update following the offseason, listed Honeycutt as guaranteed for next year, and Whiteside as unguaranteed.
Sham is probably right. Rotoworld I trust least of all three sites, to be honest.

Ya, but it's only tied up if your looking to sign someone and need the space (not going to happen anyways). They can always revoke the offers at anytime until they sign. And if they sign it becomes the actual number.

shampsports also has JT under contract next year and Tyreke the next 2 years. It doesnt seem legit at all. Same goes for hoopshype unless I'm misunderstanding it.

Any of those guys going to play PF and some C on a winning team? I don't think so! JT should be our priority and try and get the SF via trade or sign and trade! We just MUST stop trying to cover one hole by creating another one somewhere else! We are at a point where we need to start rounding out the roster not shifting chairs on a sinking ship!
Someone like Batum won't work unless Thornton is gone
I don't know about the Udonis Haslem with less defense. I really believe JT could be the perfect role player for this team. I also believe he could really be a very good defender. He has enough size and athleticism to do that. I'm sure that if he was playing in a team like the Heat or the Bulls, he would be a great defender. The system in which you are playing is the most important thing for a player. Haslem is a good defender because he has always played for the Heat.
Just look at Korver. He's always been a shooter, never known for his defense, and now he is playing the best D of his career, because he plays for coach Thibodeau and his system. Give JT a very good defensive coach, and he will be a good defender.

Is Jason Thompson? He's a nice player but some people thought this guy was going to be Chris Bosh, we got Udonis Haslem with less defense. Solid player, good pro, but I see plenty of teams making the playoffs without Jason Thompson. The mistake usually comes when a team sees a player with the potential to be much more, yet, they don't have the right situation to cultivate and extract it every game but still forge ahead and over pay for it just so another team can't have it. Jeez, look at Hickson for goodness sake.
Per usual the draft will probably have a big say on whether or not JT is back. If this team drafts Henson, Drummond, Sullinger, or hopefully Davis, you have to really think about how much JT is worth to your team and whether or not it's at the expense of filling an even bigger hole elsewhere.
The rest of the bigs (bar Whiteside) are a major, self inflicted headache.
You might want to include Cousins with Whiteside.
Its not really an insult. JT is a classic 3rd big in the league. And many of the good teams have one at about his level -- think Collison, Haslem, Gibson etc. Hence it would behoove us to retain him and not open up yet another unnecessary hole in our lineup. We've got our big #3.
Well expectations of JT by some on this board have ALWAYS been blown out of all proportions. There was talk of him being 20/10 C-Webb replacement which was just homerism at its best...or worst.
The thing is that JT could be a 3rd big for contending team without any problems. He could even be a role playing starter at PF for some contending teams without any problems. He is a valuable piece that we should keep. Is he our ideal starting PF next to Cousins?! No! Is he our ideal 3rd big man off the bench?! Just about as I don't see many that are better.
JT at a resonable contract is a great piece to have on this team, with or without Davis or any other big drafted this year. JT is NOT our problem. The rest of the bigs (bar Whiteside) are a major, self inflicted headache.
