Took Pops, son and nephew to see Iron Man; loved it. The kids' favorite part was

When Stark was beta-testing his boot jets, and launched himself backwards into the wall.

And how about

Samuel L. Jackson as Colonel Fury? I wonder how they're going to do an Avenger's movie, though, since today's fans probably can't relate to Ant-Man and Wasp, which makes the odds of them doing the original Avengers unlikely.

Been too busy frantically putting together massive amounts of flashcards for upcoming finals to have made it to the theater for Speed Racer as planned, but I may try to catch the seizure-fest tomorrow.

I did stumble upon Find Me Guilty today on cable, however -- a quickly forgotten Sidney Lumet mafia trial comedy based on a true story, starring, of all people, a badly wigged Vin Diesel . Hmmm, I probably should have saved that eek face, because... maybe it's just some sort of delirium brought on by the French vocabulary and five centuries of artists' names floating through my head... but I enjoyed it. Even more startling, I actually kinda liked Vin Diesel in it; he gave a genuinely engaging performance.

I'm scared.

Seizure-fest is right... I'm conflicted in wanting to go see it, in that I'm madly in lust with Christina Ricci, but this movie looks dreadful, and based on the trailers, I'm afraid that if I had to sit through the whole movie, I might have a Porygon-like reaction to it.

OK, I had to google it and I still don't know what you are talking about....pokemon, I think.

I want to see it purely for the visuals.

Both CG and Ricci.

As far as the actual movie... anything above full blown suck will be a pleasant surprise. I've always been a fan of the original cartoon specifically because of its cheesy badness, so that probably helps my willingness to go for the ride.

Better go quick - might not be around too long - not a very impressive opening weekend:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/11/boxoffice.ap/index.html

Directed by the Wachowski brothers, best known for the "Matrix" franchise, "Speed Racer" was panned by many film critics. Fellman added the movie would have difficulty recouping its $120 million budget.

"Unfortunately it didn't perform to our expectations," he said.

*snip*

"'Iron Man' is basically pulling everybody's audience. It's really dominating the marketplace," he said.

Over the next few weeks, several big movies will take a shot at knocking "Iron Man" off its perch, starting with "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," opening May 16, and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" on May 22.
My wife and I are not really interested in it, but we will watch it on video so we can see if it is OK for our son to see....

Finally saw Michael Clayton, which was just brilliantly acted, and featured just about the most realistic portrayal of big firm New York lawyer life that I have seen in a movie (the title character's "fixer" role aside).

And then saw Cloverfield, which I thought was brilliant in an entirely different way obviously. Hard to watch without squinting at times, but a nifty attempt at personalizing the genre.

The trailers don't lie - it's like someone took all the neon lights they could find and put them in every racing scene they could find (except for a few scenes in exotic natural locales). It was better than I thought, which isn't saying much, but the movie was like a CGI Tokyo Drift with bumper cars thrown in. The racing scenes are teriffic in their badness with spinning and jumping around with neon and blur effects everywhere. Our 5-year old liked it.

A few tidbits for those with young kids - a scene with pirahnas (not too graphic, but more than I felt comfortable with our son, so I covered his eyes), the "s***" word (bleeped out), "a$$" and "damn" a couple of times, ninja-style fighting, some blood on a face from a split lip and bloody nose, and one flipping the bird. I was a bit nervous going in (for a 5-year old), but to me it wasn't too much for him (in general).

I gave in and saw Speed Racer this afternoon. Visuals were insane and worth checking out in a movie theater, as long as you're not the type to get too angry/annoyed over insipid dialog. Had it been about 45 minutes shorter, I'd consider it a legitimate guilty pleasure, but at its length... figure I'll probably check out the DVD extras when it comes out, but won't go for repeated viewings.

OSS 117: A bunch of Spies in Cairo

At our local art theater. It is a French movie and a spoof on the early British made 007 movies, french with subtitles. Set in the 1950's in Paris and Cairo. Really good IF you understand the French tongue-in-cheek approach to a spoof. The overacting french lead has been made quite a "ringer" for the young Sean Connery but that is a big part of the spoof.

Different, enjoyable, laughs scattered throughout.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Ditto.

Completely retarded movie if you take the time to dissect it, but I had fun so I've chosen not to. Ultimately, it's not as good as I'd hoped it would be, but nowhere near as bad as I feared it could be. Worth checking out if you're a fan of the series.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Yep! Saw it today. First time in awhile I've been to a theater. I usually prefer waiting for video so I can use my closed caption.

Anyway, I am a big fan of Lucas and Spielberg. Had a fun time because, like GGG, I chose not to dissect it. Just wonderfully entertaining Lucas/Spielberg action/adventure.

Night at the Museum

Better than I thought it would be, that's for sure. Which isn't saying much, but I enjoyed it. Probably won't watch it again, but not a bad one-timer.

That movie totally and completely sucked. I mean...not a single damn laugh in it. I was embarrassed for Americans everywhere that $100 milion dollars of them wated their money on that thing.

Ugh. :p

Been watching movies all weekend, like a proper lazy ***.

The Savages was good, though a bit difficult to watch at times.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was really wonderfully acted and completely sucked me in. It was a lot different than I expected, but I was really impressed.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age... should have been called Elizabeth: The Soap Opera. It was jam packed with silly contrivances. Weird film in that I liked its individual elements -- acting, directing, writing (for the most part) were all good -- but put together, it just added up to a big ol' pile of boring.

theatres: Iron Man (not what i expected) ... IT WAS AMAZING! i loved it.

dvd: Semi-Pro (anchorman was funnier) but i always enjoy a good will ferrell movie and this one wasn't too bad.

OK, OK, I get it, you want to use it for the desert island movie thread. I won't select it and you can use it. ;)

I just watched the worst movie/sequel ever. You know what is even more scary they are making another sequel. Damn I want my money and time back

You know, funny thing, but if that's the one I think it is (stuck in tower?) I;ve seen it, heard it was supposed to be godawful...and really didn't think it was that terrible for a B-grade nothing. Perhaps its my fundamental lack of esteem for the first one -- you can hardly sully a turd with a poor sequel -- but I didn't see why that grad B scifi nothing seemed to be singled out as so awful comapsred ot the dozens of worse efforts that have rotted my eyes.

Mystery Men

Didn't have high expectations, but I like watching Janine Garofalo - she's a hoot. :D An "OK" little movie, I guess, but it is not going on my island, that's for sure.

I won two free passes to see Kung-Fu Panda tonight, so Dad and I will go. I want to check it out before our little guy goes - he wants to see it. Hopefully it's OK for his age group, but I think I need to see it first....

That was a disappointing flick. Had a few inspired moments, but just seemed like they got the very least out of what could have been a very funny premise, especially given the cast.

I had the opposite reaction, but I think largely because I expected it to suck. The cast was impressive, but the commercials looked dreadful and the reviews (both professional and from friends) were not terribly good. I didn't even want to watch it, but it's what my girlfriend at the time brought back from Blockbuster... so, sat through it, prepared to hate it, and found it surprisingly charming.

I think I just fell somewhere in between your two opinions. I'm AVERAGE! :p

So I enjoyed the new Indiana Jones movie, but it wasn't a good movie. The action was fun, the killer ants were incredible, but it just left me feeling ... I don't know, sort of ... ehh ... it just wasn't that good of a movie.

Iron Man, on the other hand, was spectacular. SPECTACULAR! I'd go see it again. I'll be buying it as soon as it comes out.

I also watched Fracture a couple weeks ago. I liked it. The acting was pretty durn good, and the plot -- even though I figured it out pretty easily, was well-thought out and executed well, too. In my opinion. If you're looking for a good movie that exercises your brain a little and isn't too sci-fi, check Fracture out.
