The Shining is a good pick, but one that had no place on my island. No point in wasting a spot on a movie I'm physically incapable of watching without having a heart attack.

Pick coming...

Need more funny. And more blood. Might as well get them both at the same time:

Shaun of the Dead (2004) -- Despite this movie checking off so many of my favorite things boxes (laughs, zombies, Brits, etc.), I didn't see it until a couple of years after its release. In fact, I specifically avoided it. For some unknown reason, I was just certain it was going to suck. Seemed like it could too easily get the tone wrong and kill the humor. When I finally caught it on cable I realized what a fool I'd been. Cracked me up, even horribly edited, and I'd picked up the DVD by the next day. If nothing else, this movie gets points for confirming that heading down to the local pub and grabbing a drink isn't the worst response to the zombie apocalypse.

Interesting... that is the one I would've picked if I decided to grab a LOTR movie.
Kind of makes sense, even the Academy decided to just hold off on giving a lot of the series awards until ROTK and then just gave it everything.

Never actually got around to seeing it myself. Went to the first two with my dad and he hated them and wouldn't go to the third with me. At some point I'll get the Extended Editions, although there is a lot of controversy about the latest Blu-Ray release so I'll keep waiting.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well, I'm leaving things all over the board for various reasons at this point, but its time to nab this:

Groundhog Day (1993) PG

If anything, the problem is that I may have watched this movie TOO many times, so that even an immensely rewatchable movie has lost some of its oomph. Long before Bill Murray got turned into an icon somehow, I always really liked him, despite almost inevitably thinking his performances were overrated. Often very juvenile. But this one was just incredibly juicy, and my favorite part of the movie has always been how they milk almost every conceivable drop out of the premise. Trying out every angle, and getting laughs from them all. Holywood is often panned for a lack of imagination. This one had it in absolute spades.

Sorry folks. Completely my fault for the timeout. [excuses]Was out of town this weekend but still had internet access, I was just very busy and forgot to check on the draft in the moments I had a connection. It also doesn't help that when I've done these drafts on another site we always skip weekends.[/excuses] At one point last night driving home I remembered about the draft, and then last night I had a dream that I had timed out. So you can all feel good that this failure has weighed heavily on me.

So according to rule #5 I can make up my pick now. Despite some nice recent picks (Ocean's 11 was on my list and Gods Must be Crazy is genius), my timeout didn't affect me. At this point I'm looking for a little more action. It's a bit strange to take the same lead in this pick as in my last one, but I really enjoyed this movie so oh well...

The Bourne Identity (2002)

Jespher, I forgot, were we going with the 50 lashes rule or not?

I need some horror... something really outstanding...

I select my favorite suspense/horror film of all time:

The Shining (1980)

How terrifying is this movie... This is Jack and Stanley Kubrick at thier best...

Damn, now I regret not taking The Shining. Should have taken it.

Pale Rider - 1985

" ... And Hell followed with him" :D

This is about the point Eastwood started getting accolades as an actual artist/director.

The classic Western elements are present as Eastwood's gruff and gritty "Preacher" takes care of the riffraff in town with monosyllabic sentences and a gun.

But as a precursor to themes of regret and redemption seen in Unforgiven's William Munny, this Man with No Name is slow(ish) to reach for the side iron - choosing instead to first attempt a peaceable solution to issues.

... OK so they're half-hearted and doomed from the onset, especially when his mysterious and presumably dark past catches up with him. But he does help a guy to his horse and suggest ice as a remedy after hitting him in the crotch with a sledgehammer ... so it's like, art and stuff.

I also love the chilly and barren atmosphere of the high Sierras in which the movie is set. It perfectly complements the Preacher's demeanor of cold, harsh, gritty, but with a certain majestic quality as well.
That's a good pick. It's basically an uncredited remake of "Shane" (which is also great) but it's still great and one of my favorites.

Your mother was a turnip.

The draft board is now up to date. Man, that was a lot of code...whew!

I love the Conan and Ghostbuster picks. I'm not too privy to horror in general, but wouldn't watching The Shining while you're stranded on an island alone be enough to drive you batty?

Lots of good movies going so far. Choosing is going to be tough.

I have about 2 or 3 I am leaning towards here, but wanted to get this on my island. Last time I took the original. This time the sequel:

Iron Man 2

In my opinion, better than the first. More action, Whiplash, Black Widow, War Machine, and forging a strong tie-in to the other Marvel comics. The humor is still there; RD Jr. is perfect in this role. Didn't want to miss out on this fun summer blockbuster-type movie.

My previous five films have all been heavily dialogue-driven, but it's time for me to get some eye-candy. With the way this draft is going, this movie might fall to the 20th round, or it might go next. Can't risk not having it, even if I think it might go under the radar. I select The Fall (2006 copyright 2008 release, rated R).

Put simply, this is the single most beautiful film I have ever seen, bar none. Not that there's anything wrong with the plot, but it wouldn't make my island if it weren't for the lavish cinematography. As a brief synopsis, a 1920's era stuntman suffers a fall, and in hospital befriends an inquisitive little girl. He begins to weave an elaborate tale for her (the visualization of which encompasses the majority of the film and provides a vehicle for the film's rich imagery), but he's got an ulterior motive...

Even though I'm still a couple turns away, I'm standing in my bathroom checking the forum and emails with my iPod every couple minutes just so I can pick before I go to bed if my turn comes up.

And if my turn comes after I go to bed let's just say that I'm far less afraid of anything you all can do to me than I am of what the missus would do if I were to try to sneak in a pick at that point. :)

That's the spirit!

Well other than that silliness about putting the missus over the Movies Draft of course (what kind of missus wants to see her man get lashed, tarred, or stoned to death? Pretty selfish if you ask me.). But I guess baby steps. ;)

(insert string of naughty words here)!

This one stings. Quite badly. Have had it in mind for a number of picks, but kept pushing it aside based on the assumption I was probably the only one who'd seen it and that it would be just waiting for me a couple rounds from now.
Lucky timing, I guess. That's kind of what makes these drafts fun - you never quite know when is the right time to pull the trigger on a movie. I actually got another PM expressing a similar sentiment, so I guess at least three of us have seen it. I kind of figured that while the percentage of people who had seen it would be low, the percentage of those who would want it would be pretty darn high, so I had it on my "snatch up kinda early" list. Then again, "Ran" was on my "don't even worry about this until the last few rounds" list and it went in the first! :) Never can tell.

I too, am off to bed, which is OK, because William usually posts around 4 am my time. See you on the flip side.
