Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

"In the casino, the cardinal rule is to keep them playing and to keep them coming back. The longer they play, the more they lose, and in the end, we get it all."

Casinò (1995)

Take Goodfellas, bring the quality of the dialogues down by a notch but add a fantastic Sharon Stone and a breathtaking final scene with "House of the Rising Sun" in the background.

Phew! Now it's time for my favorite Western of all time.

Love this one, glad it was still on the board. It might be a little long, but hey, I'm on a freakin' island.

Good pick. I was gonna take that in the next few rounds. Definitely one of the coolest movies ever made.

I'm off to work. Bricklayer has my picks, so please send him the PM if/when I'm up today. I'll be back around 6:00 PST to update the board and post write-ups. Enjoy!

In a moment of planning-for-the-future, I'm going to be out of touch this weekend from Saturday morning through Monday evening. I will be able to check in before leaving on Saturday and turning in on Monday. The hotel I'll be at claims to have wireless internet in the lobby which would mean a Saturday night/Sunday night check in too...we'll see. At any rate, I'll definitely be out of commission for most of the daylight hours Sat-Mon...anybody want to volunteer to pick for me so things move along?

Think I'll go with the first movie I ever bought on DVD as well as the first movie I ever double-dipped on for Blu-Ray (I'm hanging onto the Criterion DVD as well since the commentary is unique):

This is Spinal Tap - 1984
I got my first taste of the Tap shortly after the film originally came out when they appeared on SNL and I had no idea they were a fake band until 1988 when I was at boarding school and this was one of the weekend movies that was shown. After about 10 minutes everyone else had pretty much cleared out but I was hooked, being one of the few people into metal at a school full of Deadheads. So it seemed a little odd when a few years later this movie became huge among my peers. I'm a big fan of the mockumentary and this is one of the pioneers of the genre. For anyone who was a fan of metal or hard rock this is laugh a minute stuff. McKean, Shearer and Guest just nail the 3 characters perfectly. While their later work in the 90s and early 00s was all pretty good stuff they never quite got it the way they did here.

Epic choice!

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well. I'm going to be out for a bit, and hence unabel to fill my function as Jespher substitute until I get back. But given his somewhat...unique tastes, I figure no harm done in posting his next two selections now:

Whew! There I feel relief -- I have done my duty. Now to go update the draft board...

Sorry to hold things up, I wasn't expecting it to get back around to me that fast. The classics are disappearing fast so I'm going to grab this while it's still here, Apocalypse Now. A great film on many levels and one of my favorites.

Being a father, this next film has special meaning for me. A poignant, heartfelt film that will make you cry, cackle, think, laugh, and love. It has infinite re-watchability for me personally, due to an excellent cast, stylish camera work, and a cool score. Sean Penn is terrific in his role, but Dakota Fanning is equally remarkable! With my 6th pick, I select:

I Am Sam (2001)

Love is all you need...

I was looking through the movies I drafted last time and I liked that list. A lot of my favorite movies on it. But a number I missed as well, which I will now try to correct:

Aliens (1986)

One of the advantages of picking a movie this famous is I don't have to sell it. Do I think its the best movie of all time? Not in the strict sense. But 25 years later and I think it may still be the best movie of its type ever made. Which is kind of sad for modern moviemakers. But some of it may just be the concept itself. Giant insect/lizard like predators that incubate their young inside your body before they chew their way out? How are you going to top that? So I get me some action, I get me some sci-fi, get me some horror, and I get me one of my favorite movies I missed the last time around.
Was reading here:

http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/07/17/sigourney-weaver-interview-aliens-25th-anniversary-sequel/

and saw this interesting tidbit. Anyone know her?:

'Aliens' was also the only film of the young woman who played Newt (Carrie Henn). What was your relationship with Carrie like during filming?

She was from a military family; she had lovely parents and her mother was always with her. We were all very close and it was a long shoot, and a movie like that really brings you together. You don't forget those moments.

I know she's a teacher now in Sacramento. I think she has good memories but ultimately wasn't interested in the motion picture business. It's not all working with Jim Cameron
.

This is a movie about the insanity of the Viet Nam War. I think that's one way of making sense out of the chaos and the improbable aspects of this movie. I have talked with enough Viet Nam vets to know that this is of course an exageration of the bizarreness but not as far from the truth as we would hope. These guys were scared all the time and coped as best they could. Coppola captured the essence of the war so if you want a movie that makes logical sense, don't watch this one, but then doesn't that describe the war?

This was Laurence Fishburne's first role at age 16. He was attending an arts high school and had to miss their grand yearly production because he was busy making a movie.

This is a sports board, right? Time for a sports movie...

With the 94th pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:

Remember the Titans (2000), directed by Boaz Yakin

We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass: you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment: you run a mile. You fumble the football, and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts ... and *then* you will run a mile. Perfection! Let's go to work.

Edit: fixed hotlink

Second edit: Would also like to note that if you've ever seen the special extended edition of this that they used to play on the Disney channel, you would have seen an extra scene between Julius Campbell and Gerry Bertier that really gives some extra heart to the hospital scene toward the end. I can't find a DVD version of this that includes that scene (I already have two, not interested in buying another, even if it's Bluray), but it really should have made the final cut.
