Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

Not open for further replies.
Here are some of my leftovers, mostly console classics.

-Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara (1996) - Arcade
-Syndicate (1993) - PC
-Bubble Bobble (1988) - NES
-Earthworm Jim (1994) - SNES
-Donky Kong Country (1994) - SNES
-RBI Baseball '93 (1993) - Sega Genesis
-California Games (1987) - NES
-Life Force (1988) - NES
-Super Mario Land II (1992) - Game Boy
-Crystalis (1988) - NES

I also have to give a mention to: The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Megaman 5 and Super Mario 2 as secondary favorites behind their superior counterparts, which I was fortunately able to draft. They weren't as good nor celebrated as others in their respective series, but still enjoyable to me. In fact, MM5 was the last decent Megaman as 4 & 6 were both rather weak while 7 & 8 were bad enough to force Capcom to say "screw it, we're going old school with Megaman 9" (Including the retro restyling of the original Megaman box art ,,, which was silly even in the 80s.)

I'm not a fighting game genre fan, but I had considered Primal Rage and Killer Instinct if a Smash Brothers didn't fall to me.

Although they were never on my list, I'm surprised Rad Racer, Outrun and Road Rash didn't make anyone's list. Also, no old school Ninja Gaidens or Double Dragons ... I doubt Slim is pleased.

And one last thought, Duck Hunt = That freaking dog. And no one wants to spend eternity with him.

I built my list with very few backups (based on having watched five rounds before jumping in and seeing, at that point, zero of my games picked), but here are my leftovers:

  1. Enter the Matrix - PS2 (2003) -- yeah, this game is poorly made, but I've always found it oddly entertaining
  2. Lego Indiana Jones - PS3 (2008) -- I really love the Lego games and probably would have taken this one if I'd been here for the whole draft, but ultimately left it as a backup based on the fact that once you hit 100% completion (which I did with this game in about four days), there's almost no reason to play it again
  3. Test Drive Offroad: Wide Open - PS2 (2001) -- this game is really stupid, and the graphics are downright ugly, but there's something about relatively simple racing games with monster trucks that will never not be fun
  4. Need for Speed Carbon - PS3 (2006) -- trying to make the ugliest possible tuner car can provide hours of entertainment
  5. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix - PS2 (2006) -- see above
  6. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend - PS2 (2006) -- I've played several of the Croft games because the ridiculousness of the franchise cracks me up, but this one surprised me by actually being kind of a good game

Yeah I loved Zelda 2 and Mario 2. Weren't on my list though. And yeah I meant to post that about MM9 during the draft, but didn't wanna give it away. I played the demo for it, and it seems pretty good.

Also Zombies Ate My Neighbor and Smash TV!! Everyone born in the mid 80's or went to the arcade in the 90's had to have played Smash TV.

If we took a poll on this site, one in which even non-interested parties felt compelled to vote in, I think you woould be surprised to know just what a small percentage of people have. Most games have a core age group where many/most people in their teens when they came out will know them, far fewer of anybody else. The games that break that mold are the ones that are so big that they have TV commericals and even mainstream commentary pieces and whatnot done on them (or simply such long running series that most people here about them at some point). Games that remain just games...

But don't worry about it. Give it 15 years and you won't know what the hell the 14 year olds are playing either. :p

For the record, my mom knows who Kirby is. When I see her I'll be sure to remind her that she is now considered a hardcore gamer.
That's nice. My mom doesn't. I've been playing PC games since around 1990 or so. I have been a subscriber to PC Gamer and boot/Maximum PC since they pretty much came out. I read the reviews and am pretty familiar with most of the PC games out there.

I am familiar with lots of Atari 2600 games and older arcade games.

I don't play console games except a couple of Wii games we have. Never owned a console (except an Intellivision) until the Wii.

I don't generally consider console gamers "hardcore". That's just me. I don't like the controllers. I don't like the aim assist and hitboxes. That stuff is mostly for kids. Sorry. They are OK for some racing games, but dumbed down FPS and RTS games stink on consoles. IMHO, of course. ;)

No offense, but that makes no sense to me. Now, I know you don't play console games, and thats fine, but hardcore gamers are hardcore gamers. It doesn't matter if you play them on consoles, PC, or whatever. That's like saying WNBA fans aren't basketball fans. Just my $.02 :)

And no, I'm not covering up an insult with a smiley

1: DDR isn't a video of MY pick...My pick is the original, aka the most groundbreaking...This is just an example to the people who may not know what it is.

2: Resident Evil was made by its historically terrible voice acting. Enjoy the cheesiness!

No problem, I just look at things a bit different.

Game consoles, in general, run "dumbed down" versions of games due to their limitations with input devices, etc. They need to use larger hit boxes when aiming, auto aiming assistance, etc.

You always hear PC gamers complaining about console "ports" of games - there is a reason for this. Games are often created for the lowest common denominator (consoles) and then ported to the more powerful and flexible option of the PC. Silly save-game schemes, dumbed-down graphics, simplified levels, etc. And there is absolutely no substitute for a mouse and keyboard for FPS input. None.

I like some console games, and yeah, they look great on my 56" TV, but I really don't like playing them as much as a good PC game. I'd hate to have to play Half-Life 2 or Command & Conquer: Generals with a gamepad.

So when I think "hardcore" gaming, I think of the best players on the best systems going head-to-head. I don't think of MarioKart Wii (for example) as a game that can be played "hardcore".

This wasn't about preferring PC games to console games. I am not a console fan boy, and I don't even get how the discussion turned that way. I completely agree FPS and RTS games are superior on the PC.

Its just silly to call a game series like Megaman or Kirby "obscure" or for "hardcore gamers." Both of those series are quintessentially mainstream. Even if you are a PC-only gamer and have never played them, they are still two series you should have heard about. Especially being around as long as you have.

But I guess that wasn't the issue either, since it wasn't you who called them obscure. GGG and Brick were the ones that made that misconception. You just simply said you'd never heard of them, which is innocent enough.

I'm starting to see the reverse of what Warhawk said, now they are developing the shooters for the HD consoles and are porting shooters to the PC.

Also I'm going to pimp the Wii remote nunchuck combo again for FPS. Medal of Honor Heroes 2, control settings on advanced and sensitive on high. Just about as good as mouse and keyboard, I'll take nunchuck over keyboard movement wsad. Mouse still has a slight edge on infrared aiming. Still waiting for the Conduit.

I've heard of Megaman somewhere, but never actually seen the game or played it. Have no idea how many games there are in the series, etc.

Never even heard of Kirby....

That is actually what I am talking about. Consoles, by their nature, have fixed hardware and are the "lowest common denominator". The year-old graphics card in my PC is more advanced than any current console's graphics capabilities. Any game designed for a console by definition cannot use all the abilities of my computer unless it is heavily modified prior to finishing the port. And most companies will not put forth that effort, they just port the games over with a minimum amount of effort.

As far as "HD" goes, you could make an HD version of Pong if you really wanted to, with the white boxes very crisp and clear against the black background. ;) Doesn't mean it looks as good as Crysis does on my monitor. I sit a lot closer to it than the TV and at 1680x1050 resolution on my 22" widescreen monitor, it looks awesome.

Having never played Medal of Honor Heroes 2, I can't comment on the controller use. I am very glad that things are improving with console controllers, but the Wiimote (in the games I have played, anyways) has nowhere near the response time or fine aiming control as the wired mouse on my PC.

In playing some Command & Conquer Generals last night, it is very easy to group units and assign group numbers with a Ctrl+# key and select those with one push of the assigned # key. I have no idea how you would do 10 groups of units (like I was using) using an X-box controller (for instance) and be able to quickly and easily on-the-fly be able to assign the group numbers, select the off-screen groups, or re-assign the group numbers. All while the game is playing in real time. It is easy with mice and keyboards. Not so much (I would guess) with gamepads.

I am not bashing consoles, as I have loved console gaming over the years. I just think they have some serious limitations with certain game types that cannot be overcome until they introduce a controller set as comfortable, flexible, and responsive as a mouse and keyboard combination. Racing/flying games that are not sims are lots of fun with gamepads while sitting on your couch. I cannot stand trying to play FPS games on them, though.

At the risk of sounding like a Mega fanboy (especially after posting pictures of three games in the series), in my mind, during the lifespan of the NES the three main iconic characters were Mario, Link and Megaman (Samus only had one game on the NES afterall) with the Blue Bomber having more "main series" games on the system than Mario and Link combined.*

*(This is, of course, not including the secondary games Mario makes a cameo in such as Dr. Mario, Punch-out, Wrecking Crew and the Donkey Kong games. By "main series" I mean Super Mario Brothers, SMB2, SMB3 and the two Zelda games to Megaman's six titles on the NES. If you throw in the original Mario Brothers, then they're tied.)

From Wikipedia: There are well over 50 Capcom releases bearing the Mega Man name, easily making it Capcom's most prolific franchise and one of the best-known franchises of all time.

Kirby however is indeed slightly more obscure as he didn't make his first appearance until 1992 and was exclusively on Game Boy. When he finally crossed over to the NES in '93 the console was well past its prime and most Nintendo lovers had already moved on to the SNES. The fact that the little cream-puff has clawed his way into Smash Brothers and the sub-main stream is a testament to the game developers affection for the unlikely franchise star and plucky underdog.

And personally, I'm only vaguely aware of the Pikiman series and have never heard of Timesplitters.

That's because you are getting too old and your aim is getting shaky. :p
you know I'm joking with you, i hope

I'm just hoping you pick up one sometime (esp The Conduit) so I can have someone to play with from KF sometime.

Oh yeah, it's all good. ;)

I doubt I will get any Wii games for me, and we are intentionally limiting the games we buy for the Wii because we have a young son and don't want him playing things inappropriate for his age. I'll probably look into some games now and then, but I don't play the Wii much without him.

ok guys, if I don't receive Gary's and bdouble's rankings by this time tomorrow, then I will start the playoffs either tomorrow night or Monday evening. I'm really busy

Ok, I've sent bdouble and Gary numerous PMs telling them to send in their rankings. They haven't done so. So....the results are in. The rankings for the Video Game Draft, are: (lower score=better ranking)

1. Lowenherz: 72 (1)
2. tradepeja: 72 (1)
3. SacKings7: 74
4. Jespher: 87
5. Warhawk: 88 (1)
6. venom_7: 99 (4)
7. Bricklayer: 103
8. bdouble013: 105 (2)
9. kings4lyfe32: 105 (2)
10. SLAB: 109
11. NoBonus: 111
12. dukeswh: 112 (1)
13. Spike: 115
14. GoGoGadget: 130
15. AleksandarN: 142
16. Gary: 156 (2)

First number is your score, and the number in brackets is # of first place votes. As you can tell, the rankings were all over the place. Tiebreakers were decided by most number of 1st place votes. If that was the same, then most number of 2nd place votes, etc.

wow tied for first! The draft I think I am going to do the worst polls in I do the best, damn.

good job everyone though, especially venom_7. How in the hell did you get four 1sts (one of them mine :D) and end up with 6th place? That's a travesty!

The rankings were unbelievably all over the place. I guess theres only 4 other Zelda and Metroid fans.

Good job everyone, and thanks to all who participated and followed this draft! Let me know if interested in a multiplayer/online only draft next TDOS
