Marlon Brando

Annex+-+Brando,+Marlon+%28One-Eyed+Jacks%29_01.jpg

One of the unquestioned greatest actors of all-time. Brando is probably most revered for his performance in The Godfather. He's also greatly admired by Tarantino for his work in the overlooked cult-classic western One-Eyed Jacks, which as an aside is the only film Brando ever directed.

just a suggestion.
at some point (if not now) would you clarify what 'era' Brando you are selecting? Here is an actor who had at least two very iconic segments in his career, but its up to you.

Sure, when it comes time to lay out all the character roles. Everyone's playing it close to the vest during the drafting, so I will too. :)

I know that our Marlon Brando drafter has been accused of playing it a bit close to vest as to what era Brando will be cast. Well, I'm going to go the opposite direction -- not so much to eliminate curiosity as to eliminate confusion. When most of you probably think of my selection for supporting actress, you think of her like this:

lauren-bacall1.jpg

But I'd prefer to cast her more like this:

lauren-bacall-jewelry-line-5-17-07.jpg

Actually, she's a bit older in that picture than I'd like (she's about 80), but it's hard to find a better shot. Dial her back a few years from that, and I select as supporting actress Lauren Bacall, aged 60.

OK Dime, you've got me on edge as I'm thinking you're my last competition for my leading man.

Still shaking my fist at you VF

I doubt it. I'm not even fully sure of the plot, nor do I have all my actors planned out. I am just going to take it one pick at a time, and hopefully it will take shape.

I think my film is going to be loosely based on a very significant historical event, but the main story will likely be fiction.

Anyway, my pick:

Denzel-Washington---Devil-in-a-Blue-Dress--C10101681.jpeg

Denzel Washington

Denzel is the man. My favourite actor of all time. And fits into my vague film idea just perfect. I am not sure if I want to declare him my lead, but he will certainly be one of my main characters.

BTW, he's terribly under-rated as an actor.

Woohoo, look at the scifi flick taking shape. This one was probably safe though given that you only have 1 competitor in the arena. ;)

Yep, still I need to get both Jim and Arthur on board before we make any offers to the actors. :)

Me thinks my actor picks are safe too.

I'm starting to realize that I'm probably gonna lock up the last seed in the rankings in the next few rounds, but whatever. And I'm taking it a pick at a time as well DD, hope it works out for the both of us. Denzel is a great pick

I doubt I have any competition for any of my picks. Anyways, next up is Paul Rudd

Oh you jerk. I finally figure out the perfect semi-obscure guy for a role of mine and you bumble into him in Rnd 2?

Jeesh.

Semi-obscure? How dare you! :p

[yt=Paul Rudd's Dance Moves]aetkvFu1EYo[/yt]

He's really very funny and quick. I saw him do an after-film Q&A, and he was like a standup comic, including destroying a heckler and utilizing a guy's cell phone going off.

Ditto.

Not to mention he's adorable. The source of many a nerdy swoon ever since Clueless.

Wow, I'm glad I took him in round 2 then. I was gonna try and figure out what other big names I wanted first. There's only a couple of people I actually have in mind for my actors/actresses, and I'm playing the rest by ear

Sorry to nitpick but don't you mean "playing by ear"?

Hrm...Perhaps we should have a TDOS draft for most frequently misquoted or misused phrases?

My all-time favorite would have to be the guy who used "hoisted by his own leotard"... The mental image still makes me giggle.

;)

For Spike

Okay, I did not see this name, so don't shoot me if someone has already picked him. I've never done this before and Spike did not ask for me to find a picture.

Drum roll please...

As lead actor in the only musical genre chosen, Spike chooses as lead actor...

Johnny Depp

I added a picture ;) - VF21

Thanks for posting my pick Bricklayer. Here's the post for hyperlinking purposes. I had a few ways to go here, but I figured this was the guy that I had to have for my lead actor. His eyes are piercing, he has a charming, yet dangerous personality, and his acting is spot on. With my 2nd choice I select:

Elijah Wood
(Andrew "Ender" Wiggin (American)/Achilles de Flandres (Belgian))

elijah_wood_05.jpg
elijah_wood.jpg

Filmography:
Ender - The younger brother of Peter and Valentine, at age six Ender is chosen by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to help save mankind from the buggers. Ender is afraid of his brother and loves his sister. Wherever he goes, Ender makes things happen, and by age nine he is given his own army to command. Ender is angry at the various people who manipulate him throughout the novel.

More:
Ender is the youngest of the three Wiggin children. Ender has the compassion of Valentine, his older sister, but he also has the ruthlessness of Peter, his older brother. Ender does not wish to cause harm to anyone, yet when he is confronted with a pack of students led by the bully Stilson, Ender knows what he has to do. At age six he beats Stilson to death, although he does not know it at the time. Ender can be a killer like his brother. But Ender hates himself for that quality. Other people put him in situations where his negative side emerges, but Ender always wishes for events to be resolved without violence. His compassion is his strongest trait, and it binds people to him; his ruthlessness wins their unswerving faith in him as a commander.

Ender could be seen as a victim, a brilliant child manipulated by adults into playing a game he never wanted to play, but such an explanation is too simplistic. Ender is brilliant enough to understand the manipulation and knows that it is necessary. In the same way that Graff manipulates Ender, Ender manipulates Bean while he is commander of Dragon Army. Ender is a child in name only, and he represents the best that a human being can be, given the context. There is no part of him that desires control, and when he has it, he wishes only to avoid the abuses that he sees others commit. But Ender learns that in life we are sometimes forced to play games that we would rather not play, and that sometimes winning must be second to nothing else. Still, he manages to retain his humanity and his compassion wins out in the end, as he sets out to repay his debt to the buggers.

Ender is able to understand his enemies better than anyone else, but once he understands them he destroys them. With such tremendous empathy, even in coming to understand his worst enemies Ender loves them. This means that when he crushes them he is hurting himself in the process. Ender does not want to have enemies, so that he will not be forced to hurt anybody. He will love even those who seem to be his most bitter enemies when he properly understands them. But in the situations Ender has been in he has no choice other than destroying those enemies. At the end of the film, when Ender comes to truly understand the buggers, he is able to try to help them. He has already done them great harm, but now he can be happy because he has a chance to undo what he did to them.
(Ender) "Being here alone with nothing to do, I've been thinking about myself, too. Trying to understand why I hate myself so badly"
(Valentine) "No, Ender."
(Ender) "Don't tell me 'No. Ender.' It took me a long time to realize that I did, but believe me, I did. Do. And it came down to this: In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then is the very moment I also love him. I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them-"
(Valentine) "You beat them."
(Ender) "No, you don't understand. I destroy them. I make it impossible for them to ever hurt me again. I grind them and grind them until they don't exist."

Achilles de Flandres - A native of Belgium, Achilles grows up in the dangerous streets of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. At the start of the series, the Netherlands is under international jurisdiction during the global emergency of the Formic or Bugger Wars. This leads to an influx of refugee children of which Achilles is one. As Achilles matures, he is noted for having a brilliant mind in tactical matters, as well as a large number of sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies, two traits that will define and characterize his short and brutal life.

More:
Achilles is established as an enemy of one of the main characters, Julian "Bean" Delphiki, another citizen of Rotterdam. Both Achilles and Bean are considered for Battle School, the training ground for Earth's interstellar military; Bean is accepted, but Achilles is deemed too unstable and violent. Achilles is later sent to Battle School simply as a test for Bean: Colonel Graff wants to see how Bean will deal with the resurfacing of his old nemesis from Rotterdam. Bean tricks Achilles into a trap in an air shaft, forcing him to confess to all his murders onto a recorded tape, which Bean shows to the school's administrators. This results in Achilles' expulsion and placement in a mental institution. Bean hoped that with his confession to his murders made public, Achilles would be confined to a mental institution for the rest of his life, unable to hurt anyone ever again. The teachers remark on the irony that Bean, the small boy of Rotterdam, ends his problems nonviolently, while Ender, a similar child with a stable, fairly comfortable middle class upbringing from the United States, kills the boy who attacks him in the bathroom, defeating his enemies so they will never be able to attack him again. Bean eventually becomes an assistant to Ender and a hero of the Third Invasion.
At the end of the film, it is revealed that a mental institution was compromised by the Second Warsaw Pact in an attempt to gain the mind of the ex-Battle School student; three security guards dead, but all of the escaped prisoners are accounted for save one: Achilles.

Minorly disappointed to see Depp off the board. C'est la vie.

All right, as bummed as I am that I couldn't fill this role with Banderas, and now miss out on a little "authenticity" I had been hoping for in the role, (plus the chance to re-team the "Desperado duo), lucky for me, my second choice just might be the best modern star specifically for the historical epic genre.

nyet14407182101.widec.jpg

Russell Crowe

Unlike several other big name stars, my leading man can appear in era pieces without seeming too "Hollywood" for the epoch. (Or so says Slate magazine ... "the rank of current actors who can convincingly portray a premodern hero starts and ends with Russell Crowe")

Not that my lead is all that much of a hero either. But Crowe is built for that type too.

Well, since I have to waste a draft pick to do so, and I'm not as particular about the director and producer as others are, I'll probably be wasting my third pick to slightly amend my genre, now that I have the two actors that I need to make my vision work (I went with "adventure" in case I had to call an audible) but, in the meantime, let me go ahead and make my next pick.

I shall need my draft board thingee to be slightly modified, as I don't actually have a lead "actor," as such... at least, not a male one. Top billing goes to Jolie; second billing goes to:

christina_ricci_1actresssnapscom.jpg

Eh...your "action" movie wouldn't happen to be taking place on a topless beach by any chance would it Slim? :p

Trust me, I read the rules; it's not that kind of movie... :D

Although, I did have a "Plan B" concept that's not too far from what you appear to be implying...

Hmmmm... haven't yet thought up a replacement writer. And both my director and lead actor are likely quite secure, so I'm afraid it's time for more girls. Oh, so sorry. :p

Rosario Dawson -- Haven't decided yet where she'll fit in, but I think she would work as any of the B Movie standards -- vixen, sex kitten, wide eyed innocent recently corrupted, and so on. I trust her acting ability to take on any of the cat fights or go-go dancing that may be required. Also, we know from previous roles that she can handle a bit of kitsch or camp with just the right amount of wink and nod.

My Pick:

Natalie Portman

natalieportman.jpg

I haven't decided if she will be the lead actress quite yet, or if I even need one seeing as this is for the most part going to be a character study. I have an idea of where she will fit in, and I'm sure the chemistry will be great between her and Norton.

I think her diversity will be handy. A pretty legitimate knock on her is that her acting is sometimes 'flat' in certain roles, but I assure you this will not be one of them.
