I'm actually starting to regret entering... I feel like I can come up with an excellent cast and movie plot but I would have an extremely difficult time representing it in writing... I would be much more comfortable in a "co-manager" role... lol

I think you should come with as complete a list as you can of all genres/subgenres no matter how long, and let drafters pick in order from that list.

I was actually thinking of something like that, as well. It's hard to even put together a list of draftees without getting married to a genre and I'd have to start all over again if mine was taken by someone else.

I would suggest that picking the director in itself is tipping your hand towards a genre. If you go through the first two rounds and haven't managed to match your preferred director with the right genre, you're screwed before you even get to the actors.

In some cases, but if you pick Action-Explosion-Guy as your director in Round 1, and by Round 2 the only genres left are Romantic Comedy and Costume Drama, good luck.

Yes, but in Rock Band you get to tie it all together AFTER you have all your personnel in place. You don't have to announce your blueprint in the first or second round. If you end up changing course in midstream based on available personnel, you can account for that with a different concept at the write-up phase. Why not do the same here?

Yeah I'm really having problems with the first couple of rounds with this draft, not only with the directors/genre, but with actors/genre. Let's say I go with Mr. X as my first round choice, but he's only starred in suspense movies, and I end up with romantic comedy or musical as my genre. That's really a waste of a pick, unless I just cancel it out by putting him in a cameo role (still a waste of a 1st rounder)

In the original first draft of this idea back last summer, I actually had it that you would draft your actors/director first...and then at the end of the draft there would be a random drawing to see what genre your movie was going to be in. The idea being that it would throw a wrinkle into the drafting -- do you draft specialized personnel and hope for the right genre, or do you draft people who can work across genres and will be right for anything. Thought too it would lead to some very original/hilarious wrapups as the guy who drafted the entire cast of The Godfather found out that he actually had to do a romcom.

But changed my mind and thought people might get a little pissy about their vision, whatever it might be, suddenly evaporating at the end as the result of something random, and so drafting genres was born. Now if its going to be that incredibly onerous, we could dedicate the first round to nothing but genres so that people would have direction...but why be that restrictive? If you are worried about genre, take it first, but not sure why we would make everybody HAVE to take one first -- if somebody loves an actor just that much and wants to take them instead and is willing to risk the genre, seems to add something to leave that open as a possibility.



P.S. As an aside, I'm not sure how successful Rock Band has been as a format -- they have been the least viewed of all of these drafts aside from Cars (the most viewed was of course, Babes ). I think there are definite advantages to being able to see it all come together as the draft progresses rather than a big splot at the very end that may well be missed by anyone but the drafters. Its also of course the way the movie biz works -- get a script, get a star/director to sing on, then build from there.

The Rock Band drafts haven't had as many views because they only had 5 real rounds. It seems to have been one of the most popular drafts for the participants, and definitely one of the most challenging...

I like the idea of a genre selection, but I would rather it be allowed/taken at any time. I have an exact idea in place, and it would be nice to have a couple things to cement with the first few picks.

That's actually part of the reason I like the idea of drafting genre first. Feels more authentic to the film making process.

Not that anyone even joked about this being anywhere near authentic, but...

Also, I'll admit to not being very fond of the write-up format as has been utilized so far. Too clunky. And tends to confuse things when it comes time to vote. I usually think I can get an idea of what people are doing/where people are going as the picks are being made and the write-ups have, in some cases, worked to completely undo the idea that I may have already had about how a person's team/selections/band would mesh. Choosing the genre first, rather than having it be a mid- or late-draft surprise, would seem to me a good way to do the write-up as we go -- "I pick so-and-so, he'll fit into my movie in this way, etc." sounds more effective (and more interesting) than "I pick so-and-so because he's super nifty."

We don't draft genres. We declare them (secretly) at the beginning and build our casts around the genre we have selected. Then, at the end, we can have our secret genre revealed and we can show how all our draft picks fit together ... and meld into the stated genre.

I'll be honest. If we have to choose genres, I'm going to pick one in the first round for the simple reason there are a lot more actors out there than potential genres...

I think of all the options I like this one the most. After two days of brainstorming I finally have a direction that excites me and it will be supremely disappointing if the whole structure falls in the first round by not getting the genre I need.

Would a secret ballot have a limited number of genres? How would that work if it's a secret? Wouldn't you need know if something had already been selected?

I think genres are rather arbitrary anyway. The only time movies are advertised by genre is in trailers and video stores. You don't go to a theater and see the genre of the movie next to the rating, plus, some movies have a bit of genre combination, like the romantic comedy science fiction action movies that are really dramatic political thrillers...

Works for me. I'm on board with either this, or we just choose our genres ourselves, no drafting, no limits to the number of each. That way everyone wins. There will still be competition for the actors and directors (we could even throw in something else that has to be drafted instead)

If you allow for secret genre selection, my thought is everyone simply picks one and sends the information to someone here who isn't participating who will keep the information private until the draft is completed.

It actually adds a bit of intrigue to the mix. Do you pick sci fi, knowing it will probably be picked by at least one or two others? Do you pick comedy, and hope your comedy tastes won't be too different from your audience (voters) to be successful in the polls? Do you pick western, even though it's a genre that's been fairly ignored for a long time?

My thought is no restriction on the genre itself; just the requirement that you must submit a genre to our impartial third party - I'm thinking someone like Jeremy might be a good idea - and then build your cast accordingly and see what happens.

I actually think this would be fun. Maybe not for this year's draft but maybe next year's edition. It would be truly challenging but certainly not impossible with the right imagination.
