Slips and turns the ball over.

[Quick Notes]
Not a great over-all game from Fredette, but he had some very impressive moments. He shot the ball poorly for most of the game. He didn’t take a lot of 3pt shots, most of his shots were in the lane, and they were rolling off the rim. He only had 8 points in the 1st half, but finished the game with 23 points.

What was impressive is what occurred at the 9 minute mark of the 2nd half.

Utah ahd finally clawed its way back into a tie. Fredette scores his first points of the 2nd half and continues to score. In a span of 3 minutes Fredette goes on a 12-0 run to break the game open.

So 12 of his 23 points came in a critical point of the game. Other than that burst, he was content to run the offense, try to set people up, and get shots up in the lane when the opportunity presented itself.

Obouo and Emery for BYU carried the team in the 1st half, and Fredette closed it in the 2nd half.

This was the game that I stated was a very un-Fredette type of game. He actually played defense in this game, getting into a defensive position, and spent most of the game trying to set up teammates. Even on some of his drives to the basket where the ball rolled off the rim, and some of them were pretty darned creative, I felt that he was driving to look for a teammate and there was nothing there. But as you said, at the end, when the game was on the line, the real Fredette showed up and put the game away.

I remember you mentioning a game like that, and I was looking for that post before posting my game comments, because I did agree with your assessment. I just couldn't find your post to quote.

I think his lack of 3pt shooting really was the indicator that he was looking more to set people up, rather than being a scorer. And I agree that it looked as if a lot of his forays into the paint were with the intention of getting the ball to an open shooter either on the wing or in the paint.

I wasn't keeping track of his assist rate, but he ended up with 5 which surprised me, as I thought it was a lot higher, and it would have been far, far higher if his team had been able to knock down a lot of the open shots he set up for them.

Arizona at Arizona State (2/13/2011)

Arizona – Derrick Williams
29 Minutes, 11 Points (4/5 FG, 0/0 3pt, 3/3 FT), 5 REB, 0 Assists, 2 Stl, 1 Blk, 1 TO (Charge)

Hand still taped, but not as heavily as it’s been.

Gets a hand on a ball on defense and grabs it for the steal.
Great defensive rebound, wrestled it from an ASU player as they both went up for it.

Finally got the ball for first touch on the right block, doubled and passed it out to open man on wing.
Another good defensive rebound.

Got good position under the rim, received the ball and put it up off the glass for the bucket.
Ran down man on a fast-break and blocked shot.

Dived onto the floor in a scramble for the loose ball and was able to secure it, even with his hurt hand.

Out of the game at the 13.5 minute mark.
Back in at 10.5 minute mark. (Team + 5 while he was out)

Got good position on the left block, but his man did a good job of being big and keeping straight up and Williams missed the shot, ball goes out of bounds, but stays with Arizona.

Got ball in the middle of the zone on the right post, and got to the rim for basket + 1.
Great post defense, forced ASU into a very tough shot which wasn’t close.

2nd half

5 points (2/3 shooting) in the 1st half.

Got ball on left block, immediately double-teamed and he kicked it out to open player at top of the key. (First real potential scoring touch in the 2nd half, 5 minutes into the game)

Got ball on left block again and once again kicked to open man at top of the key who missed 3pt shot.

Got ball in paint, tripled-teamed. He faked the pass to pull 2 defenders away from him then attacked the rim. Was off-balance and put up a tough shot, but it went in. His first shot attempt and 1st points in the 2nd half at the 11.5 minute mark.

On next possession, got ball and drove into the lane and called for Offensive Foul. Tough call.

Drew foul from the right baseline as he did one of those ‘bring the ball up and shoot’ motion. (2-2)

Called for a reach foul, gave driver the basket + 1. He should have used his feet to slide into position.
Out of game at the 8.5 minute mark.
Back in at the 5.5 minute mark.

Great finish at the rim to avoid contact and get the bucket on the fast break.
Fouled ASU player when he got beat in the post. (4th foul) Out of the game at the 5 minute mark.

[Quick Notes]
A sub-par game for Williams in this one. Arizona State played a very, very tight zone which was geared to prevent Williams from getting touches, and they succeeded in that.

Williams hardly had any touches through-out this game, but he was incredibly efficient when he did get the ball. He hit 4 of his 5 shots and his 3 FT attempts, and he was immediately double or tripled teamed when he got the ball, but he did a very good job finding the open man.

He only had a single turn-over and that was on a charge, so he made good decisions with the ball when he got his touches, but for the most part ASU was able to take him out of the game.

I think he was able to play an efficient game and not force anything because his teammate Kyle Fogg had and absolutely outstanding game scoring 26 points on 7/13 shooting and 6/9 from the 3pt line.

So Williams allowed himself to be taken out because his teammates were stepping up and taking advantage of the offensive opportunities made available to them due to ASU’s constant attention to Williams.

Still 11 points and 5 rebounds is a sub-par game from Williams. He played a smart and efficient game, but it’s not one that’s going to wow the average viewer.

Kansas at Kansas State (2/14/2011)

Kansas – Josh Selby
11 Minutes, 4 Points (1/6 FG, 0/3 3pt, 2/2 FT), 1 Rebound, 0 Assists, 2 STL

Missed the last 3 games with an injury to his foot and isn’t starting.

Into the game for the first time at the 14 minute mark.
Out at the 10.5 minute mark. I think he has zero’s across the board. Didn’t take a shot, get a rebound, assist, steal, ect.
Pretty passive, but considering it’s his first playing stint after coming back from the injury it isn’t a surprise.

Back into the game with 1 minute left in the 1st half.
Took last shot of the 1st half from the right corner, but missed the 3pt shot.

2nd half

0 points (0-1) in the 1st half.

Into the game from the bench at the 17 minute mark.
Out of the game at the15.5 minute mark.

Into the game for the last 5 minutes when the game was pretty much decided. Put up 5 shots and hit one of them.

[Quick Notes]
Selby was coming off of an injury and it looked like it. He started off the bench and basically was not aggressive and didn’t do much with his time in this one.

He only played 11 minutes in this one, so it’s going to take a game or two to work himself back into playing shape.

It would be in Selbys best interest to stay in school another year. He's a talented player, but this entire season has been marred by injuries, and when he has had a chance to play, he's been underwhelming at best. Unless he really elevates his game between now and the end of the season, he would be making a huge mistake throwing his name into the draft.

I'm beginning to come to the same conclusion.

I've got one more taped game of Kansas, and I'll probably watch a couple of more, but if he doesn't start showing me something I'll probably stop watching the Kansas games.

And it makes it difficult since he's dealing with injury, as you can't really get a good feel for him.

I'm not interested in the Morris brothers as draft prospects for the Kings, so I don't want to waste my time watching a kid who probably won't come out or isn't ready to come out.

I feel the same way about Rodney Williams of Minnesota.

I watched a couple of Minnesota's games, realized that this sophmore wasn't ready for the NBA, and decided to stop watching him, as I already have my hands full trying to keep up with all the games.

Jones very lucky, had contact on driver who missed shot, but foul wasn’t called.

Good pass to Lamb who hit open 3pt shot from left corner.
Terrible alley-oop pass attempt, pass way to short and it was picked off.

Whipped great pass to man under the rim from the 3pt line.

Got beat off the dribble by Bost who had an easy path to the rim and bucket.
Missed another 3pt shot. Just to the right of the top of the key.

Out at the 9.5 Minute Mark.
Back in at the 8 minute mark.

Made a tough pass to Jones in the post which resulted in a TO. Fault is probably on Knight.

Good defense and forced a TO.

Got aggressive. Took the ball right down the lane and made a good shot.

Good defense to force a tough shot which was missed.

Good push up the floor, found Lamb open in the corner for the 3pt basket.
Had ball stolen when mid-court pressure came.

Used screen at top of the key, defender went under the screen and Knight knocked down 3.
Really aggressive take from the right wing straight to the rim, got fouled and finished. + 1

Allowed himself to get trapped at his baseline on full-court pressure. Ball ended getting tied up and stayed with Kentucky who had the possession arrow.

Intentionally fouled. Missed 1st on 1&1.

[Quick Notes]
They had an overhead camera from the center of the court where the speakers are in Rupp arena.
In the earlier going they used that view a lot, and I’m not a big fan of it.

Thankfully they didn’t use that camera angle much in the 2nd half. I watch a lot of Kentucky ball, so hopefully they won’t continue to give that over-head angle a lot of TV time.

On to the game.

Both Terrence Jones and Brandon Knight had very good games.

Jones had a nice shot where he caught the ball, took two dribbles then put up a shot which went in. I’m constantly looking to see if Jones has SF game, and that was a nice move.

Unfortunately he also airballed another attempt which was from about 19 ft, but he got one of those to go.

Jones still had a very strong game. He shot it well, was strong in the post, grabbed rebounds, and actually did a very nice job passing the ball and racking up 5 assists.

I’m still leary about what position he’ll play in the NBA, but he continues to have strong game after strong game.

Knight started off the game not shooting well. I think he was 0-3 from the 3pt line and was just missing shots.

However, he started to get going and ended up with 24 points on over 50% shooting. He did a good job of finding open players on the corners and made some nice pick-n-roll passes.

He does have to work on his handle, as he had a couple of turn-overs and TO-like situations where he was pressured and let the ball get away from him.

Knight really isn’t a pure point guard. I don’t think his handle is as good as Tyreke’s or Wall’s, but he’s a much, much better shooter. He’s able to use screens to get himself open, as well as shoot it off the bounce.

With his defense and shooting, he continues to be a player I could see pairing up with Tyreke if we decided we wanted a smaller guard next to Tyreke.

Michigan State at Ohio State (2/15/2011)

Ohio State – Jared Sullinger
27 Minutes, 11 Points (3/8 FG, 5/6 FT), 2 REB, 1 Assist, 2 Stl, 2 TO, 4 PF

Husted for Offensive Board, didn’t get it, but knocked it out of bounds on Mich St.

Got ball at the foul lane, faced up and missed jump shot.
Got ball on left block. Backed down and spun into the middle of the lane, hooked defender for Off Foul.

Out at the 15 minute mark. (0 points. I can’t recall him leaving early with no points before)

Back in at the13.5 minute mark. (Team -1 one while he was out.)

Got fantastic post position a foot outside of the rim, but his turn-around attempt rolled off the rim.

Guarding and being Guarded by #25 (Derrick Nix 6’9 270).
Nix shrugged off Sullinger in the post, got ball and slammed it home.
Tried to get an offensive rebound, and didn’t get back up the court. Nix got a put-back attempt.

Got beat on high-low action and his man scored easy basket.

Got ball on right low block. Quick spin baseline, staying in position and hit right-handed hook. (1st points of the game at the 9.5 minute mark. Now 1/3 FG)

Got ball on right mid block. Backed his man down with 3 dribbles, then spun baseline and put a 5ft hook shot off the glass which rimmed out.

Good offensive rebound. Spun into the center of the lane and made a floating 8ft jump hook.

Picked up 2nd foul at the 8 minute mark trying to defend the post. His opponent got the bucket + 1.

Will probably be out for the rest of the half.

2nd half

4 points (2/4 FG) in 1st half.

Got beat on the high-low again. His man scored the easy basket.

Got ball on low left block. Two dribbles to back his man to the center of the lane, spun center and missed 6ft jump hook.

This time tipped the high-low to disrupt the play and prevent another basket.

Got ball on right low block. Spun baseline to the rim, and got the ball up on the glass for the basket. (At 18 minute mark. 3/7 FG)

Battled on offensive boards but not able to come up with it.
Stripped Mich St player in the lane for TO.
Interfered with ball in the cylinder.

Good defense on Nix to prevent him from getting a good shot off.
Stripped when making move and spinning into the paint.

Got another strip which ended up out of bounds. Possession goes to Ohio State.

Missed a lay-up attempt. Went for Off Reb but didn’t get it. I think he was fouled on Off Reb attempt.

Got ball on low right block. Was fouled when defender tried to knock the ball away.

Made 1st on 1&1. (First FT attempts in this game)
Fouled on left low block. (Made both)
Out of game at 2.5 minute mark. (Has 4 fouls)

[Quick Notes]
The worst game I’ve seen from Sullinger this year. I think part of the problem was that he had problems banging with some of Michigan State’s big guys, especially 6’9 270 Derrick Nix.

He typically does a very good job staying out of foul trouble, but in this one he picked up his 2nd foul with 8 minutes left in the game and had to sit out. So he only put in 27 minutes of work.

Still he ended up with only 2 rebounds which is unusual for him.

He actually had quite a few good looks that weren’t falling for him, and he made all but one of his free-throws.

Michigan also went after his size as they converted two high-low action plays getting the ball over the top of Sullinger a couple of times in the early going. Their third attempt failed when Sullinger finally got a piece of it.

Overall, a poor performance from Sullinger in this one, as he wasn’t able to dominate the boards and the low block like he normally does.

Oklahoma State at Texas (2/16/2011)

Texas – Jordan Hamilton
26 Minutes, 15 Points (4/13 FG, 3/9 3pt, 4/4 FT), 6 REB, 1 Assist, 2 Blk, 2 TO, 1 PF

Came off a down screen, turned and fired in a 3pt shot from the top of the key. (Shot really flat, but it goes in)

Drove from wing to baseline on the left side. Got to baseline and went up for shot, but it was defended well so he made a baseline pass which went out of bounds for a TO.

Used small screen, got free on the left wing and knocked down another quick 3pt shot.
Fouled his man as he went to the rim.

Faced his man up, drove to the baseline then got pass to open man in left corner.

Flashed into the lane, got the ball and fouled on a turn-around jumper. (Made both)

Got offensive rebound and fouled on the put-back. (Made both)

Great alley-oop pass from the left 3pt wing to Tristan Thompson for the flush +1.
Out of the game at the 10 minute mark.
Back in at the 4 minute mark.

Cut across the paint, got the ball about 2 feet outside the FT line, pulled up and knocked down jumper.

Missed wide open 3pt shot on a loose-ball scramble.
Good defensive rebound.
Missed final shot of the 1st half. Took one dribble to get free and missed 3pt shot.

2nd Half

15 Points on 4/9 FG in 1st half. (4 Rebounds)

Drove baseline from right corner. Put up tough shot which missed, but kept after it, and ball went out of bound and stayed Texas ball. From the inbound got the ball in the post, and missed turn-around jumper.

Out at the 13 minute mark.
Back in at the 7.5 minute mark.

Missed 3pt shot from left wing. (Taken out after missing that shot at the 6.5 minute mark and didn't get back into the game.)

[Quick Notes]
This was an exceptional 1st half by Hamilton, followed by a 2nd half to forget.

Hamilton had 15 points in the first half on 4/9 shooting and 4/4 from the FT line, as well as 4 rebounds.
In the 2nd half he was 0-4 with no points and 2 rebounds.

Now, he didn’t really play all that much in the 2nd half, but when he was in there he didn’t do much.

Hamilton showed that he can score in a variety of ways and his defense was good through-out this one.

His shot is a little bit flat, but he shoots a good percentage and has a very quick release.

I still consider Hamilton as one of the top players in this year’s draft as a potential back-court mate with Tyreke.

Guarding and being guarded by a pretty big guy #23 (DeAngelo Casto 6’8 255)
Missed 3pt shot from right wing.
Forced Casto into a travel in the post, after Casto dived into the lane and got the ball.

Got ball on right mid block, fantastic quick pass to cutting Perry for easy basket.

Again good defense in the post, used his feet to push Casto out and force a tough missed shot.

Got into the lane, stepped through and put up shot but it was emphatically blocked out of bounds.

Casto fouled on nice drop-step baseline with 5ft hook + 1.

Attacked the paint, then kicked out to open teammate for made 3pt shot.

Got ball in middle of the zone, attacked left and put up a nice bank-shot from left side 6ft out.

Great defensive rebound.

Got the ball in middle of the zone, attacked to the right and put the ball in the hoop.
A great show on a guard, which forced a bad pass for a TO and transition slam dunk.

Got offensive rebound, fouled on putback attempt. (Made both)

Great defense, leaped up to snatch the high-low pass.

On inbound pass, spun off his defender into the lane and caught lob for alley-oop two-hand jam.

Fouled Casto on Casto’s attack to the rim.

Played big, kept his hands up high and forced a bad shot by a guard.

Got stripped under the basket for the TO.

Couldn’t secure the defensive rebound.
Knocked down 8ft baseline shot with 0 seconds left on the clock.

[Quick Notes]
A fantastic game from Williams, and by far his best game since getting his hand hurt. He had two very good halves of basketball. Scoring 12 in the 1st half and 14 in the 2nd half.

He was incredibly efficient going 7/10 from the field and 12/12 from the FT line.

He had 8 rebounds, which is actually a bit under his average, but he won the battle against his opponent Casto who ended up with 6 on the night.

This was the best I’ve seen Williams play the pick-n-roll game. He was doing a very nice job of slipping into the lane after setting the screens, and his teammates were doing a much better job getting him the ball on the slip.

All around impressive game. The only negative was his 0-2 shooting from the 3pt line.

Connecticut – Kemba Walker
39 Minutes, 16 Points (3/10 FG, 1/3 3pt, 9/11 FG), 6 Reb, 3 Assists, 1 Stl, 3 TO

Drives into the lane, pulls up at the FT line and misses jumper on 1st possession.

Good pass to Oriakhi in the post.

Drove into the lane and picked up his dribble and triple-teamed. Faked a pass, then took a tough turn-around fade-away baseline shot from 14ft which missed.

Broke the zone, dribbled into the lane and found big man under the basket. Quick pass and easy bucket.

Drove into the lane, but pass to high to baseline cutter and ended up being a TO.

Hesitation dribble got him into the lane, then double-clutched a jumpshot from the FT line which missed. A tough shot that really looked forced. (No points so far in the game at the 7 minute mark)

Hit a long 3pt shot from the left wing. Actually banked it in, so it was a lucky shot. First points of the game at the 4 minute mark. (1/4 FG)

Misses a 3pt shot from the left wing.
On the last possession of the 1st half, drew a foul on a wild attempt. Made both.

2nd Half

5 points (1/5 FG) in the 1st half. (Completely outplayed by Siva so far)

First possession of the game, man falls down, so Walker hits straight-on 18ft jumper.

On the dribble, missed 3pt shot from left wing.

Good pass to Oriakhi on the fast-break. Oriakhi was fouled.

Fouled at mid-court. Hit both on 1&1.
Had ball stripped in the lane on his fast-break drive attempt.

Drew foul while dribbling in the lane. (Made both)
There was a technical foul. Kemba hit 1 of 2.
Dribbled it for a few seconds then took a shot from 16ft out which was missed.

[Quick Notes]
Another really bad game for Kemba Walker. He was completely outplayed by Siva in the first half only scoring 5 points on 1/5 shooting.

In the second half he managed to get to the line a lot, where he was very efficient going 9/11, but other than hitting his free-throws he did not look remotely like player-of-the-year material.

He spent a lot of time playing off the ball. When he got the ball he didn’t seem to know how best to attack the defense.
He took a lot of forced shots which had very little chance of going down.

When UCONN really needed him to step up and provide some scoring and leadership he let them down.

I think that’s really the biggest difference I’ve seen in his game compared to the start of the year.

I think he’s really lacking in the confidence area, and for that reason he’s not providing the same sort of leadership he had at the start of the season. At the start of the season he was a confident leader, taking his team on his back and carrying them to victories.
Now, he seems to be shying away from that role, and his ability to score and lead the team has diminished with his lack of confidence.

Kansas – Josh Selby
21 Minutes, 4 Points (2/9 FG, 0/3 3pt, 0/0 FT), 0 REB, 5 Assists, 1 Stl, 2 TO

Broadcast was on the Pitt vs. Saint John’s at the start. Didn’t get to the game till 14 minutes left in the 1st, but it was ok because Selby had just come into the game off the bench.
First play that I see, he drives the right wing, gets to the rim, and scores the bucket.

Nice drive into the lane, then pass in the lane to Morris for the easy lay-up.
Dribbled into the paint then made a fantastic one-armed lob pass to Morris for the alley-oop dunk.
Had shot blocked in transition for loss of possession.
Had a pass tipped and stolen for the TO.
Out at the 5 minute mark and didn’t return in the 1st half.

2nd Half

2 points (1/4 FG) in the 1st half.

Gets into the game at the 14.5 minute mark.
Nice drive into the lane from the left wing, finished at the rim with the finger-roll. 1st points in 2nd half at the 12.5 minute mark.

Set in the right corner and airballs wide-open 3pt shot.
Caught ball on the left wing, instead of shooting 3pt shot, drove into the lane, but traveled on his move.

Out of the game at the 10 minute mark.
Back in at the 5 minute mark.
Drove into the lane and took a tough shot which missed.

[Quick Notes]
Still had limited minutes in this one, logging 21 minutes.

Didn’t do much in the 1st half with only 2 points on 1 of 4 shooting, and did a bit more poorly in the 2nd half with 2 more points on 1/5 shooting.

He missed all 3 of his 3pt shots. He did, however, have some very nice passes, and ended up with 5 assists.

Shot the ball poorly, took some low-percentage shots, and all-in-all not a great game from Selby.

I watched Selby play in a couple of highschool games and I was impressed with his passing ability, although he seemed to have more of a scoring mentality. Kansas has a very restrictive system where all the players have their role, which at times makes it hard to judge the overall talent of a player. Especially freshmen and sophmore's. So far, Selby looks very unconfortable in his role at Kansas, and of course the injuries haven't helped. I felt the same way about then freshman, Jordan Hamiliton last year at Texas, where his idea of playing was to shoot from anywhere on the floor. This year, he's playing within the system and taking better shots overall. As a result he's been given more freedom.

Thats why I think Selby would gain from staying in school. While the system might stiffle his creativeness, I think in the long run it will make him more fundamentally sound.

Just want to say a big thanks to Uncia03. Alot of hard work has clearly gone into this thread, and I don't think it should go unnoticed. I haven't had the time to watch as many college games this season (caught about 3 or 4 games from most of the big schools), although I will be making time once March Madness comes around.

At this point I'm really liking Derrick Williams. I know he's not a very good shooter yet, but I do believe he has the athleticism to be a SF at the next level. He's not exactly a small guy anyway, so some mins at PF might work also. I think he has alot of talent, and he'd be a great fit next to Tyreke and Cousins. That's a poweful trio, and one built to win in the playoffs with the right guys supporting them. If we don't get a top 3 pick, Williams is the way to go. And even then, he might sneak into that top 3 if he has a strong tournament. Love his combination of size, strength, jumping ability, fundamentals, attitude, rebounding etc.. The guy could be great (and I think he will be).

Selby has disappointed, but I see Baja and you have that aspect covered.

Few guys I'm interested in seeing more of are the Jones', Sullinger (going to be very good but is he redundant with Cousins down there already?), and Fredette. Wouldn't mind getting some more looks at Faried also. Definitely take him with our 2nd rounder if he was there.

Anyone know if Irving will make it back at all this season?

Anyone know if Irving will make it back at all this season?

Irving had his cast removed a bit over 2 weeks ago, but there isn't a timetable for his return.
It's a bit disappointing because I didn't get a chance to see any of his games, so I'd absolutely love for him to come back, if only for a game or two, to see how his game stacks up to all the other players I've been watching this season.

But if I had to guess, I'd guess that he won't be coming back. He's already being talked about as a top 3 pick, and just like player agents don't want the top picks to participate in game-like situations, he might be advised to just continue to rest up and not do anything which could hurt his draft status.

As far as Derrick Williams goes, I'm a really big fan.
Even though he's a big kid at 6'8 he's comfortable facing up and taking a jumper. Now he doesn't do it that often, preferring to attach the rim, but you can see that he's got good form on his shot and he's not afraid to pull the trigger. Since Williams leads NCAA for FT attempts a game, he should just keep doing what he's doing and attack the rim, as it's working just fine for him.

So in shooting aspect of a SF's game I have Williams a clear winner over Terrence Jones.

But both Terrence Jones and Derrick Williams are terrific athletes, though I'd give the edge to Terrence Jones who is just really strong and explosive. Williams is also really strong and has made some spectacular plays, but I think Jones gets the edge here.

Terrence Jones is a lefty, which is really nice, but the form on his shot isn't good, and he has a slow release. He also loves to play in the post. He isn't the post player that Sullinger is, but he has a lot of PF game to his game.

So for all these reasons I'd have to take Derrick Williams over Terrence Jones if I was looking to pick up a SF for the Kings and I had to choose between them.

The harder player to gauge is Perry Jones III. Both Derrick Williams and Terrence Jones would break Perry Jones, as both are far, far stronger.
But Perry Jones has that freakish NBA athleticism, he's lean, he's quick, he's smooth, he's long, and he's a fantastic athlete and explosive leaper.

Even though Perry Jones III is taller by 2-3 inches than either Terrence or Derrick, he's a clear SF in this league due to his lean frame. His game is also that of a SF.
Out of all three players he's by far the most comfortably taking the ball off the dribble, then rising up and hitting the pull-up jumper.

The form on his shot looks good, but he still has to work a lot as he isn't a very good shooter from distance. In fact, he hardly takes any 3pt shots because he won't make them at a high percentage, which is both good and bad. It's good because he's not forcing things, but it's bad because he can't hit them.
If you compare that to Derrick Williams who takes 1-2 3pt shots a game, only when necessary, and has one of the highest 3pt % in the NCAA if not the highest. (He was the best a couple of weeks ago, but I'm not sure where he's out now as the last game I saw he went 0-2)

So I know that Williams can hit the college 3, and is comfortable taking it when necessary, and I also know that Perry can't just yet.

Perry's game is just so smooth, so you'll be watching him play, and he'll do something spectacular and you think, 'Wow, this kid can be a superstar someday'.

The biggest problem with Perry is really his intensity. He doesn't fight the way a kid should fight while on the court. Terrence Jones wears his intensity on his sleeve. Williams is more composed on the court, but you can see his intensity in his play.
Perry can completely disappear from the game, and just settle, even if it means his team's loss.
So you have to be concerned for Perry. Will he work off the court as much as he's going to need to, to be a top player? Will he be able to ratchet up his intensity when he get's to the NBA?

Perry has the highest upside and could be hands-down the best of all three players, but there's also the chance that he completely flames out.

At this point in time, with the direction the Kings are headed, I'd probably choose the safer pick in Derrick Williams at the SF spot, but I'm not going to blame any team that takes Perry Jones III in the top 3, because he could be a superstar in 5 years.

To ellaborate on what Unica03 just said, Williams is still leading all of college in 3pt percentage at 67.5%. He's only taken 40 3 point shots and made 27 of them. Whats even more astounding is that his overall FGA is 63.1%. So I think its safe to say that he's a very efficient scorer. T. Jones overall FGA is a respectful 46.2%, but seems pitiful next to Williams. And while T. Jones 3PP is a subpar 30.6%, it looks very good next to P. Jones 12.5% 3 pt average.

Both T. Jones and D. Williams are similar in height and weight and strength. I think both are capable of playing some PF at the next level, but will primarily be SF's at the next level. Of the two, T. Jones is the best all around defender, and thats saying something, because Williams is a pretty good defender. But if your looking for someone that could possibly be a lockdown defender, its Terrence Jones. He's been gifted with that special talent of shotblocking timing. And he'll block shots from anywhere on the floor. And while both are good rebounders, I once again give the edge to T. Jones. But on the offensive side of the ball the edge goes to Williams. He plays more under control, and has a good feel for the game, while T. Jones sometimes seems like a bull in a china shop. The odd part is that both average around the same amount of points per game. Williams just seems to come by his easier. I like both players, but if I had to choose between them, I'm leaning hard toward Williams. But if Williams is gone, then I would take T. Jones second.

I agree with everything Uncia03 had to say about P. Jones. He scares me to death, and its my personal opinion that he's a couple of years away from being able to really contribute. His defense is lousy most of the time, and at times I would call it no defense at all. He's a rebounder of convience. Which means he gets the rebounds that bounce right to him, but doesn't fight for rebounds. He seems to shy away from physcial contact, and with his slight build, I can understand that. However, he can jump out of the gym, run like the wind, and has terrific form on his shot. He handles the ball like a guard, and at times passes the ball like a PG. With an optimistic point of view, I see another Kevin Garnett. Oh if only he had Garnett's attitude. And thats the problem. I can also see a player that eventually just stands and shoots three pointers.

I would take Harrison Barnes ahead of P. Jones right now. That could all change with a good showing in the tournament. Thats if Baylor gets into the tournament, which is no given the way they've been playing. To sum it up, and be redundit. P. Jones has the most upside of any player in the draft. But if your going to go on what you see, and not what your hope he'll become, then I think there are a lot of players I would take before him. I said similar things about Derrick Favors last year, and so far he's proven me right. People were comparing him equally with Cousins and certainly had him ahead of Monroe. I doubt they would make those same comparisons now.

Having said that, I do think Favors was partially a victim of the Georgia Tech system, where I can't say the same thing about P. Jones at Baylor. I saw intensity from Favors last year, and some frustration as well. I just don't see that from Jones. And thats what scares me.

Back in at the 3.5 minute mark.

Off the dribble, two dribbles to his left and in from top of the key, and pulled up for a 19ft jump-shot which went in.

[Quick Notes]
Not a great game for Barnes in this one. He was really inefficient from the floor and his shot was just off all night. With that said, he rebounded well, and had a couple really nice takes to the rim.

In the early going I was utterly unimpressed with Barnes, as he was completely passive and invisible out on the court. And even though he missed his shots today, at least he was active in the game.

I’m almost to the point where I’ve gotten rid of the bad taste in my mouth from his early season play, and am considering moving him up to my top SG prospect. He isn’t quite there yet, but he’s getting closer.

Drove base-line from the right corner, double-clutched a shot in.
No-look pass which was too hard and not able to be handled for turn-over.
Called for a walk on the defensive rebound, but it should have either been a no-call or a foul.

Fouled going to the rim from the left baseline (Made both)
Got caught under the rim, got shot blocked.

On inbound play, faced up, his man backed off and he knocked down the 3pt shot from the left wing.

Critical steal on post pass.
Good post defense, forced man to shuffle feet for TO.
Provided weakside defense and provided the play of the game with an emphatic block on Washington’s last shot attempt to win the game.

[Quick Notes]
I’m going to be a little bit critical of Williams in this one. His statline was fantastic (26 points & 11 Rebs), and he made huge plays down the stretch, but he’s a good player and I’m going to hold him to a slightly higher standard.

First of all, he had 7 turn-overs in this one. By far the sloppiest I’ve ever seen him play. It just looked as if he wasn’t as focused as he normally is.

Second he allowed Bryan-Amaning to go for 18 points in the 2nd half. Now Amaning wasn’t his man the entire time, and it’s not that Williams played poor defense the entire night, but if you let your opponent score as many points as you do, then even if the numbers are big, it’s sort of a wash.

So this was a bit sloppier than I’d like and he didn’t do as well on defense as I want.

With that off my chest, there was still a lot to be positive about.

As mentioned earlier, he’s not afraid to take the 3pt shot, and in this game he was 2/2. So this continues to be proof that he’ll be able to spread the floor on the next level.

He also made back-to-back-to-back defensive plays to win the game.

First he got a steal in the lane.
On Washington’s next possession he played good post defense on Amaning forcing a shuffle of the feet for a Washington turn-over.

And of course the last play of the game he ended it with a thunderous block to seal the deal.

He was the game’s leading rebounder, being the only player with double-digit rebounds and he shot a good percentage at a 50% while hitting 8/9 FTs.

So a lot to like, but there was more slop in there then I’d seen in previous games from him.

I agree with everything Uncia03 had to say about P. Jones. He scares me to death, and its my personal opinion that he's a couple of years away from being able to really contribute. His defense is lousy most of the time, and at times I would call it no defense at all.

I just want to touch upon the defense of all three of these players.

First, Baylor plays in a 2-3 zone which makes it much harder to tell how good of a defender a player might be.
With that said, a zone usually won't hide a great defender(Udoh), but it can make good defenders not look good, and poor defenders look decent.

In the case of Perry Jones, because he's not physical it doesn't look as he's a good defender. And because of his height, sometimes he's having to guard players 40+ pounds heavier than him, and he looks inadequate doing it.

At this point in time, all the evidence of his play points to not being a good defender. But it could be that when matched up against small forwards he'll be a great defender. He just isn't getting that opportunity right now in college, so it's hard to write off his defensive ability.

Neither Derrick Williams or Terrence Jones have the issues with the zone that Perry Jones has. They match up man-to-man almost exclusively. Their problems are who they are matching up against.
Derrick in particular has a problem, because he's playing Center for Arizona, so he's always matched up against all the big body's thrown his way. He is never actually matched up against a small forward. He's athletic, so I think he'll be able to play SF defense pretty well, but at the moment he's always having to spend his time defensively in the post.

Terrence Jones also has to match up against bigger guys, but at least he spends a good portion of his time playing the power forward position, with Harrellson playing Center. So Jones doesn't have to bang around quite as much as Williams does on a game to game basis.

Terrence Jones is a much better shot-blocker than Williams, and for that reason I'd give the defensive edge to Terrence over Derrick. Both are being asked to be post defenders, and because I believe that Terrence Jones is a bit stronger than Williams, I think it makes him look as if he's the better man defender, but I think they are both pretty evenly matched when it comes to perimeter defense.

But I think both can be very good defensive players at the next level, but because we don't ever get to see them square off against other SFs in the league, it's all just speculation.

And like everything else with Perry Jones, it's all up in the air. Who knows if he'll be a good defender or not. It's almost impossible to tell. Going just by what we've seen you'd have to say that he's a bad defender, but you can't say anything definitive due to the situation he's in.

Called for the offensive foul fighting for position on the low left block. Elbow was a bit high.
Caught ball very low right block. Double came, and the ball got tied up.
Nice catch-and-lay-up in the lane for the easy bucket.

On inbound play, got ball deep left post position. Two dribbles with left hand, then spun into the lane and floated a 2ft shot for a made bucket.

Got shoved out of the paint while fighting for position, no call. Missed 3 from corner on kick-out.
Had JaJuan Johnson shoot over him for the bucket.
Got ball low-left block, missed 4ft base-line turnaround shot.
Got around posting JaJuan Johnson and stole entry pass.
Offensive Rebound and tip-in for bucket.
Another Offensive Rebound and put-back.

Got fingers on ball for a block on a driving guard’s lay-up. Unfortunately, JaJuan Johnson got offensive foul, and Sullinger fouled him on put-back. Sullinger’s 2nd foul at the 5 minute mark. He’s coming out of the game and will probably be gone for the remainder of the half.

Got ball in mid right post. Dribbled with back to basket through the lane. Reached low left block, and was stripped for a TO when going up for the 2ft shot.

Got ball in low left block, backed into middle of the lane, fouled going up for turn-around jump shot.
Missed lay-up attempt.
Dunk on a break-away caused by TO from Purdue.

[Quick Notes]
A good game from Sullinger in this one. At the start of the game he really attacked the post and couldn’t be stopped. At the start of the 2nd half he was again aggressive, and getting the ball in his spots.

For some reason his team stopped going to him for a very long stretch, which hurt them in this one.

In the later stages of the game, Purdue was triple teaming Sullinger in the post, and doing a good job to disrupt his rhythm.

He had some TOs, and he didn’t do as well on the glass as normal, but his post-work was as good as it’s ever been, and he demonstrated why he’s probably the best low-post scorer in the nation.

I thought I would mention Sullingers last game, in which he only scored 5 pt's. If you just looked at the boxscore, you'd think he had a terrible game. As it turned out he only played 12 minutes. He got in early foul trouble right off the bat with 2 quick personals. So they sat him down. By the time they would have been ready to put him back in the game, there was no point. The was for the most part, over! The game ended up being a laugher for Ohio St. and they just coasted to victory with some of their starters on the bench.

He did grab 7 rebounds in the 12 minutes however..

Oklahoma State at Kansas (2/21/2011)

Kansas – Josh Selby
20 Minutes, 7 Points (3/8 FG, 0/2 3pt, 1/1 FT), 2 REB, 3 Assists, 2 Stl, 3 TO

Started the game on the bench.
Began play at the 14 minute mark.

Missed 3pt shot from the left wing.

Out of the game at the 11 minute mark
Back in at the 8 minute mark.

Missed wide open 16ft jumpshot from the left base-line.
Took and missed last shot of the 1st half. 3pt shot from left wing off the dribble, after holding the ball for a few seconds.

2nd half

2 points in the 1st half. (Basket made on first offensive possession in the game, then nothing afterwards)

Into the game at the 15.5 minute mark.
In position to provide help defense, but moved out of the lane rather than trying to take the charge.

Picked off pass for open-court steal. Got stripped on his shot attempt, ball out of bounds off of him.

Got ball on left wing. Drove into the middle of the lane and missed the one-handed floater. Got offensive rebound on that missed shot.
Good drive from right baseline and finished at the rim.

Set a great back-screen to allow teammate opportunity for wide-open alley-oop dunk.
Got ball on left wing. Dribbled to top of the key then spun opposite direction into the lane, but traveled.

Good entry pass to posting big man for easy lay-up.
Tried the same entry pass from the same spot (right wing) this time didn’t pass it high enough and it was picked off by the man defending him.
Out at the 8 minute mark.
Back in at the 3 minute mark.

[Quick Notes]
This will be the last game I watch of Kansas to scout Selby. He just isn’t showing me anything at this point in time. He had 4 points through 19 minutes of action, and tacked on 3 more in the final minute of garbage time.

He has shown some ability to pass the ball as well as some ability to shoot and defend, but with where the Kings will be picking, I don’t see any chance that we’d end up with him, and there are a lot of players I’d rather pair with Tyreke at the moment over Selby.

Illinois at Ohio State (2/22/2011)

Good offensive rebound. Missed turn-around hook put-back attempt.
Good offensive rebound, dunked put-back.

Spending a bit more time trying to get post position in the post as opposed to the 1st half.

Sullinger really looks tired out there, I wonder if he’s under the weather.

Got ball on mid-right block. Spun baseline, leaned towards basket but missed lay-up.
Good offensive rebound.

Worked to get great post position on the right block. Got ball and easy lay-up.

His man left him to guard Craft who was driving into the lane. Craft made a nice pass and Sullinger dunked the ball.

[Quick Notes]
A very, very, very odd game for Sullinger. In fact this was the most “un-Sullinger-like” game I’ve seen from him this year.

In the previous game against Purdue he was fight for position on the low block and got the ball over and over again. He dominated there with 25 points on 9/14 shooting.

In this game he only had 4 post opportunities in the 1st half, and only got 2 more in the 2nd half.

He spent the vast majority of his time setting high ball screens and off-ball elbow screens. I haven’t ever seen him utilized like this on offense before, and it clearly impacted his scoring and his ability to break the defense.

He got more baskets on open looks from pick-n-rolls, but he just wasn’t an impact player on offense, and he had 0 free-throw attempts which had only happened once prior and hadn’t happened in 23 games, which was a direct result of his lack of post presence.

And he wasn’t going up against a power defensive player, so I don’t understand the offensive change.

Tennessee at Vanderbilt (02/22/2011)

Vanderbilt – Jeffrey Taylor
31 Minutes, 9 Points (4/10 FG, 0/3 3pt, 1/2 FT), 2 Reb, 3 Assists, 1 Stl, 2 Blk, 4 TO

Bad pass, picked off by Hopson.
Fantastic quick high-low pass for easy dunk.
Slipped and lost ball which ended up being easy FB for Tennessee.
On inbound play, got free on curl under basket and had easy slam-dunk.
Cheated too much on defense to provide weak-side help, and let Hopson get open for an open 3 attempt. (Missed)

Out at the 15 minute mark.
Back in at the 10 minute mark.

Drove to baseline, but made a bad pass out to 3pt man for a TO.

After a few moves, Hopson able to finally get around Taylor, but was fouled by Taylor. (non-shooting)
Fantastic ball denial on Hopson on the perimeter.
Contested Hopson fast break attempt and forced a miss.
Big one-hand slam on fast-break dunk.
Blocked Hopson’s 3pt shot.
Missed turn-around jumper in the lane.
Great drive on fast-break for the lay-in.
Nice extra pass to Ezeli when Ezeli’s man rotated for wide-open dunk.

Out of game at the 13 minute mark.
Back in the game at the 12 minute mark.

Good entry pass into the post to Ezeli who was fouled.
Lost Hopson in a fast-break situation. Hopson got to the rim + 1.
Missed 3pt shot from right corner.
Attacked the lane and was fouled. (Made one of two)
Got caught on a great Tennessee screen, Hopson able to get to the rim and score.
Moved to a zone defense.
Very strong take to the rim and finish.
Tennessee takes the lead, so back to man-to-man, bad rotation on a switch which allows Hopson to get fouled going to the rim.
Great drive and pass to open big man. Big man fouled going up for dunk.

[Quick Notes]
Taylor played very good defense against Tennessee’s leading scorer Scotty Hopson. Hopson ended up with 19 points on 6/16 shooting, but only 1 or 2 buckets came while Taylor was on him.

On the offensive end, Taylor wasn’t as aggressive as he should have been. He only got two FT attempts which shows his lack of aggression. He wasn’t horribly inefficient hitting 4/10, but he was missing almost all of his jump shots.

Taylor doesn’t like to shoot unless he’s got a good open shot, but as has been the case, those open shots weren’t falling for him at a high enough rate.

He also had 4 TOs which hurt. He had a TO on the first play of the game, then slipped on the floor for his 2nd TO. He had one more in the 1st half, and another (which I didn’t see) in the 2nd half.

He isn’t a play maker, but he does a good job making the right pass to the open teammate, and he isn’t a ball stopper. He’ll move the ball if he doesn’t have something and take the shot if he’s got a good one.

He needs to be more aggressive with the ball on the offensive end.

Made a nice drive to the base-line then pulled up and made 10ft jumpshot. (1st points of 2nd half)

Drove baseline, and got position under the hoop and made basket.
Lost ball for TO while trying to dribble it up in transition.
Got a bucket on the fast-break.
Called for a charge on fast-break made lay-up.

Back in at the 4 minute mark.

Made a move, but dribbled ball off his foot. Ball went to a teammate, so no turn-over.
Made spot-up 18 ft jumpshot from the left wing.

[Quick Notes]
I’m going to say that the double-double Jones got today (10/10) was one of the least impactful double-doubles I’ve ever seen in my life.

This was just an awful game from Jones. He shot poorly, (5/13) he missed a ton of post shots, he missed his jump shots, he wasn’t aggressive either moving with-out the ball or posting up, and though he somehow ended up with 10 rebounds, I would have only guessed at him having 4 by the end of the game.

He started off the game aggressive, but missed his first two shots, and then seemed to be passive for the rest of the game.

Just a bad game from Perry Jones, despite the double-double.

One would almost call P. Jones double/double an accidental one. At the moment, Jones doesn't have the "IT" factor. I see little intensity from him. I'm not sure if its Baylor's system or if its just who he is. But regardless, he still scares me to death as a top 5 pick. I keep waiting for him to give me just one great game where I go WOW! Guys like Williams, Sullinger, T. Jones, etc. give me games like that on a regular basis. I can't remember one from P. Jones. He's just sort of there. If he had just one half of T. Jones intensity, he'd be a superstar.

gotta agree with you on p jones. after that youtube highlight clip i was in awe of his natural talent however after watching him in games i've been less than impressed with him as a top prospect that draft boards have him listed as.

Hey, he's one of those guys that 4 years from now could be a superstar. Of course thats the lure of the guy. There's no denying his talent. But it would be nice if he would just give us a glimpse of what the future holds. Its one thing to take a flyer on a player like Aminu of the Clippers. Your betting that his athleticism will turn into skills, so you expect ups and downs. But with a guy like P. Jones, he has the athleticism and the skills already, so he should be a no brainer. But he's not, and thats what scares me..

This is the problem with Jones. He should be a no-brainer, but he hasn't shown what he needs to show to make me comfortable. With that said, I can't blame any team for thinking about picking him up with a top 5 pick.
