So, I just bought myself a new phone (HTC Incredible), with the Android 2.1 OS...Google Sky Map might just be the coolest thing ever. Because the phone has GPS, an Accelerometer, and a Compass, I just point the phone at the night sky and it tells me what I'm looking at. Also, I can tell it to search for sky objects (stars, planets, galaxies, constellations, messier objects) and it will give me arrows on the screen of the phone until I am pointing it in the right direction. Way, way cool.
Also, it has a Google translate app which allows me to speak into the phone and it will translate into any number of foreign languages (and respond verbally, since it has both speech to text and text to speech).
I'm blown away by how far cell phone technology has come these days. It's my first smart phone, and I'm absolutely blown away by all of the functionality it has. Five years ago you had to pay several hundred dollars for a hand held GPS navigation device. Now? It's just built in to the phone, with turn by turn voice navigation. Never again will I have to carry an instrument tuner with me when I go play music some where. I downloaded a free app from the Android Market, which detects note frequency to the tenth of an Hz. Hell, the 8 mega pixel camera (with HD video) is pretty nice, too.
My only complaint is that the NBA mobile stuff isn't free. NFL mobile lets you watch the NFL channel in real time, on your phone, for free. For the NBA, you have to pay a subscription fee.

I still live in an area so remote that cell phones simply do not work...and for that, I may actually be a little grateful. Some of my fondest childhood memories involve trips to places we never truly intended to go, places we found because of a poorly marked road or wrong turn... It seems that with every succeeding generation of new technology, our lives are just becoming more and more structured and controlled. (And yes, I'm aware I'm saying this on a message board on the Internet, something that was not even in my wildest dreams as a child...)

I'm testing to see if these show up, they're snowy egrets I pictured at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area while doing some research. The second one is a stink bug pictured from below. (Same place. It's titled wrong, it says choleoptera, but stinkbugs are actually hemiptera - true bugs)
Edit: It worked! If people want to use them, they can. Just remember to give credit somehow.

So you're a bug person? Good, then perhaps you can tell me what the ugly - UGLY - bugs are that I see up here. They're brownish colored, about twice as long as my thumbnail and look like they're prehistoric and armor-plated. They can fly...

This is suspect #1 as proposed by Capt. ! Their young hatch from lawns in April, so it's too late to do anything about this generation. Don't keep a waterlogged lawn, and remove thatch from the area to disrupt their nests. I'm sure that you (VF) have to do some clearing to this effect anyway because you live in the forest. It's still there... it just doesn't show up. Sometimes the hotlinks don't work so well.
Decided to give Netflix a trial run. We have Blockbuster now and a store right up the street, so they are convenient, but they have been changing their terms (for the worse) on length of time for rentals, etc. Now that you can stream movies (for free) with Netflix over the interwebs to the Wii in addition to the computer, we figured we'd give it a try. Even our wirelessly networked computers worked well. Once we get the Wii disk, we will give that a shot too.

Yesterday I heard my neighbors fire alarm go off and it went on for about 10 minutes. I started smelling smoke and I ran outside. Walked over to the main office and let them know about it and had someone go check the place with me while the other lady was on standby to be ready to call 911.
Peaked through the balcony window and it was open. Saw smoke creeping out of it and it started to become thicker. Knocked on the door, tried to open the door but it was locked and could hear a small dog inside. The lady who accompanied me called for some keys but this neighbor had added an additional lock to the door. The lady at the office was notified to call for the fire department.
The door was busted open before the fire department showed up. Ran inside and found the stove was on and no one was home. The elderly couple left a couple things cooking while they stepped out to go to the market. The stove was turned off the melting pots were removed. It smelled like melted kevlar. Four fire trucks showed up but luckily it didn't get to the point where they were needed.
The neighbors came home to discover the havoc. This is probably the third time they have done something like this but this is the closest it has happened to something dangerous happening. I hope they learned their lesson.
