The "Poor Me" Disease

Kingster

Hall of Famer
Will it ever be cured? I refer to Beno and Salmons and probably others (Miller has been the stalwart) who stop playing because of they are miffed at whatever or whomever - the refs, another teamate, you name it. Of course, they don't get back on defense (It's very convenient to be miffed, because then you don't have to hustle) and the other team scores on a fast break. They already have the virus. They can't even play 10-20 minutes all-out without taking a breather by complaining. The "Poor Me" disease is a sign of mental weakness, emotional immaturity, and just being a loser. If Reggie wants to build a team he better start coming down hard on the spoiled children.

I guess some people just like to try and find something negative to talk about...

Sorry, dude, but all in all, I think our team has the beginnings of good chemistry, etc. You're picking really little nits, IMHO.

Look at it this way.. Do you ever put in less than 100% at work? Are there days that something sets you off and you want to go home but can't so you pretty much just sit there and get paid for being unproductive? You can say they make millions so it shouldn't matter, but lets say you make more than I do.. I could bring that same argument against you can't I? I say you make more than I do so you should suck it up.

Then again are there days that you are just "on fire"? Sometimes 5 days in a row where everything is going right?

Basketball players are the same. This is their job. I played baseball for about 12 years and it was supposed to be fun for me, but there were days I didn't want to do it, but had to because I didn't want to let my teammates down.

The funny thing is that when I play ball in summer leagues I cannot get enough of it right now, but back when it was spring, and winter leagues, and school team I had to think about it almost every day, and it got to be a job to me.

I dunno what the point of all that was, but try to cut them some slack. It's their job, and sometimes they will not be playing at 100% every minute of every game.

Why don't we see how this season shakes out? I have a feeling that many vets will feel the push from youngsters to perform, and things may change.

Preseason is preseason. I didn't see Beno doing any "poor me" and I was at the game. I did see one long session he had with a referee and it was 100% learning on Beno's part and a bit of coaching by that ref. They both smiled when Beno walked off.

Salmons is a pro. Has been there done that. It is preseason for the refs don't forget and every year there are 1-3 rookie refs as well.

Mikki and Brad will upgrade their attitudes toward foul/no-foul situations this year. period!!

Overall a really, really good first half for everyone and a good 4th quarter for the rooks.

Well, I think some players complain because they want to win that bad. It's only human. It's not just the NBA either, I see it in plenty of tournaments. There are probably some who complain just to... complain, I guess. Which is unfortunate. I saw some but not that much complaining in the last game. Not so much that it cost us the game or anything.

It's been around for a long time and, to tell you the truth, I really don't want to see it gone. I think it adds more passion to the game. It's a shame taunts (like Mutumbo's finger) and trash talking (nothing that crosses the line) are not accepted in the NBA anymore. Back when Yao Ming came into the league, people wanted him to complain more and when he got his first technical, everyone cheered for him. Lol.

As long as these complaints don't get in the way of playing defense (which sometimes they do) then I don't mind. I don't think it's a problem we have to worry about yet. It's only been three preseason games.

Ok...yes, of course. Brad is a complete and total wimp out on a basketball court. One of the worst I have seen. Very good. But...why now? 5 years into the Brad Miller era, during preseason, with a 32 year old center who may not even last the year here, what's the point of starting this thread now?

And Beno is only a sporadic offender. Most basketball players at this level are weenies of one sort or another when it comes to complaining. But if anything we may have less of that disease this year than we have in had in years past. Brad, Mikki "and 1!" Moore, and our own aspiring thespian Cisco being the only major offenders at this point. Maybe John seems to be getting a little worse, but its not out of control yet. After leading the league in FTs I don't think Kevin ever gets to complain to a ref again, Bobby will play through (old Bobby -- have seen no signs from young Bobby yet) KT and SAR have taken their whining to the bench permanently, and Shelden (stoic) and Jason (too green) don't figure to replace it. Seems an odd time to randomly raise this issue -- its been there for years. Until we jettison our starting frontline will continue to be. Biggest threats to continue the tradition I see going forward are Cisco and Spencer, but I think we were a lot worse a couple of years ago.

I think it is appropriate to broach this subject once every year depending on outward appearances. The main issue is the "not-getting-back-on-defense" when a perceived foul is left un-called. Brad and Mikki being the big violators. We just hope none of the others get into it and read how the fans perceive them as "poor me" or "whiners" when they do it.

The Kings loose a lot of referee respect by the persistent whining and it has to stop. Coach Reggie will lower the hammer on that this year IMHO so the "kids" don't have a mentor for that crap. :o

I guess I must be going blind because I certainly haven't seen anything this season to indicate a real problem in this regard. So why is this thread necessary at this juncture? If we actually see a problem, shouldn't we address it then - if and when it surfaces?

First off, Beno is european, and they just work differently. Miller has the sickness, but he's getting better, some days moreso than others. Salmons needs to get a new headband and a new head along with it. Salmons is a huge problem because he is three position player and he doesn't properly change gears when moving into different slots. Salmons then wonders why he is subbed out, and because he is so dam talented, it bottles his mind. He is a natural PG, and we are trying to make him into a SF, which he is not. IMO, Depth chart should be
PG-Beno, Salmons, Brown
G-Martin, Jackson
F-Garcia, Donte
PF-Mikke, Thompson
C-Hawes, Miller

Salmons? Point guard? I don't know about that. Salmons has always been dominate with the ball but usually it's when he finishes with the ball. He's as much of a point guard as Garcia is. Probably less. And Garcia is less of a point guard than Bobby Jackson.

OK, Salmons a pg? Dude, you are giving the Marauders and the education that comes with it a VERY bad name. Salmons IS a SF, period, dude is not a PG. Thats like saying Spencer is really a SF because he can shoot jumpers.

I think the OP was talking about the riff between Beno and JT, when Beno passed the ball towards JT who had indicated he was coming out to get it, but then didn't which resulted in a TO. Beno, instead of getting back on defense, walked toward JT to have a discussion about where JT should have gone to get the rock.

I think when one posts with a hightened sense of awareness such as FakeInjury, one is bound to be misunderstood.

I get where the OP came from, as it was also discussed in Amick's blog:

It was one of quite a few signs on this night that the players on this squad won't be afraid to speak their respective minds for the greater good. In one second-half sequence, a Udrih pass was stolen on the left elbow when Jason Thompson didn't step up to meet the ball. Udrih stood frozen in frustration while the Lakers went on the break, leading Francisco Garcia to just about rush the floor and shove him back on transition defense while expressing his own frustration with the coaching staff. By the time Garcia and Udrih talked, the swingman took the more-tempered route and a message had been sent.

Beno was having an off-night so it seems because Kevin had some words with him too
Count Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin among the most ardent supporters of the plan. While he played just 15 minutes, he spent much of it pleading for the tempo to pick up. On one particular possession, he ran the left side of the floor waiting for a pass-ahead from point guard Beno Udrih. When it didn't come, he mentioned to Udrih twice that he wanted the ball to come.

Floyd Mayweather has noticed it too.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather also watched the game courtside, including one play in which he impored the official to tell Kings swingman John Salmons to "stop crying."
 and that's one person who I hope to never bring up in discussion again.

The Kings are the ONLY team in which the players argue with the refs or get frustrated with other players. We should trade them all and only get players that don't get frustrated with anything.

:D:D, I'm sorry, I can't help myself. :D. Please, please, give me more. And, please, tell me your not going to vote.

In all honesty. I have no idea what your talking about.

yeah the Beno thing actually, was the only one i noticed, i thought it was way outa line... I was screaming at beno through my tv to stop crying! the fact the lakers went on a fast break and Beno never went to help out, because he couldn't wait to cry to Jason about it, really set me off... theres a time and a place to tell Jason about something he didn't do right... like maybe the next stop in play... but to just stop altogether then and there to cry while the other team runs the court on a fast break?... I hope Reggie punk'd the crap outa Beno for that.

Reality check: IT'S PRE-SEASON! The guys are getting used to playing with each other. Now is exactly the time when they should be communicating frustration, etc. to each other so they can play better together WHEN IT COUNTS!

Sam Amick is full of it IMHO. He'd rather try and stir up stuff than anything else. Beno wasn't whining to the officials, he used the EXACT right "time and place" to tell Jason about something he didn't do right. Yeah, the Lakers went on a fast break but so what?

Did I mention this was a PRE-SEASON game? Also known as a scrimmage?

"Punk'd the crap outa Beno"? Good lord.

Yes, you should see an eye doctor. If you watch the ball, you're not going to see the people who don't get back on D because the ball is where they aren't.
