The Official All The Trades/Moves INFORMATION Thread

Im actually ecstatic about everything that has happened. We will stil probably suck but you know what? We have players who have motivation to play hard and best of all we get to see the prospects with MAJOR minutes. I'm just glad that we have alot of new faces to watch instead of that horrid train wreck we had a few hours ago.

One pretty cool thing no one mentioned specifially is our 3rd big in the rotation.

Gooden may be out for the year, and will Moore and Williams gone, that spot is totally up for grabs. I really hope Diogu gets that slot as he probly has the most potential. He's got a mean streak.

Opps, sorry I missed nbrans earlier post. Forgot about those two 1st round picks coming this summer that we are "stuck" with!

If these numbers are indeed close to correct, and we cannot play for any significant big-time player this summer, then these moves are intended merely to "set the table" for more youngster playing time this season and next, roster reduction to be able to easily absorb our 1st rounders, perhaps more moves this summer to further reduce salary, and one more year of sucking until we can be a FA market player.

I suppose we could also plan on moving a player plus one of the first rounders for one player in return to give us a little more immediate cap room to deal with.

Or is it Joe & Gavin just wanting to pay less for their NBA hobby next year?

With all things considered, this team actually got alot better today.
Our outlook for the future got better, the team still sucks. I could see us having use for McCants as a backup combo guard if we go for a PG and a big man in the draft/free agency, but hopefully most of these guys are just filling up space until season's end.

OK, by my quick calcs, we will get rid of all the traded-for dead wood in a few months and have a team salary of only $45.3 million (assuming Mikki's leftovers only hit us for the $2 million we owe him). This year's salary cap was $58.7 million. You can do the rest of the math.
Will have to add salary for any draft picks we sign and salary cap will be going down.

Very informative thread for those that were stuck at work and couldn't watch it all go down and keep track themselves, thanks!

I feel slightly better about our position providing Petrie doesn't give out very good deals to Gooden and McCants after the season (which I fully expect)... We should probably try to move K9 + Houston for a lottery pick + something if we can... There is sure to be a 2010 team willing to make that move

Here's the situation next year, using Hoopshype numbers:

Kevin Martin 10,180,170
Andres Nocioni 7,500,000
Kenny Thomas 8,553,125
Beno Udrih 6,077,500
Mikki Moore 2,000,000
Spencer Hawes 2,332,800
Francisco Garcia 5,800,000
Jason Thompson 2,035,920
Donte Greene 870,000

That totals $45,349,515

.
WOW - we only have 1 guy over 10 million per year. No wonder we can't compete.

Thanks for the wrap-up Brick. It is a great synopsis of a confusing few days.

I wonder if gooden will play any at all this year?? I'd rather he didn't. I am guessing we may see some KT in spot min with no real backup big guys.

#39
I'm sure Gooden will make it a point to come back and play at some point... He's in the final two months of a contract year - he has to impress someone to maximize his contract (and hopefully thats not us but if he's will to sign cheap with us I won't be against it) The possibility of losing Houston's pick is kind of dis-heartening because I felt we might be able to trade it up for another lottery and a chance at a solid PG, but if that doesn't work out hopefully Sessions is available come FA time

I worked out that we have about $22.6 mil in expiring deals....given the projection that we are losing $25 mil on the year, GP has done the Maloof boys a big favour.

Hopefully, with McCants, Solomon, Kmart, JT, Ike and the rest we can play some run and gun.

Can't see us defending our own shadows, but given the record, do we really care now?

The product on the court just got younger, more energetic and a lot more fun to watch. And they are capable of defending the one thing that really matters - that lottery draft pick.

Pretty much a win-win situation for us, the fans, and the team. Play hard, learn your craft and prepare for the future. And make no mistake about it...we're in the winding line waiting for our turn to get on the ride and not out in the parking lot looking inside wishing we had the price of admission.

With our picks it should be about $50,000,000

The cap this year was $58 million, and it's rumored to go down. So we should have anywhere from $6-8 million next year, assuming we don't re-sign any of the new guys. Not much, but possibly enough to sign a mid-tier free agent or take on some salary in exchange for draft picks.
The MLE counts as a salary slot about 5.5-6 mil. Teams under the cap can recind the rights to the MLE. Until its recinded its counted towards the cap number.

Couldn't agree more.
I'm really looking forward to the remaining games and seeing what these guys can offer long term and getting that pick across the line.

I'm really not excited about Nocioni's contract, but I do have to give Geoff credit for one thing: he finally blew it up. Maybe not well, but it's definitely blown up. Cheaper team, lots of free space coming up on the roster, and the certainty that we can't get any worse than the 30th place we're already in.

A couple of first rounders, and a few bargains among the undrafteds, and we'll be all ready to go...

How's the 2010 draft selection looking?

Since this is the only open thread I believe if fits here - some people might be down on what we got back, mainly not getting a prospect and 1st rounder which we believe we could have gotten... But if you look at it in a different light, we have a lot of bad contracts gone and we can truly see a pretty clean slate to work with (if we ignore most of the 1yr contracts we got back).

We have a pretty solid core to work with if everything pans out, and if we're lucky Nocioni can hold us over until Donte is ready. Nocioni is tough, hustles, and plays with his heart and those are the types of people I want around the youngin's of this team. Not lazy and greedy. I think even though we didn't get EVERYTHING we wanted today we have to look at the positives and pray none of the guys on our roster get resigned for MLE money. We still do have some bad contracts that go on for way too long, but K9's contract becomes an asset come draft day and beyond... If anything we get a short look at a couple players (Gooden, Mccants) and hope Petrie has learned from a couple past mistakes in over-paying for players if these guys do well... It's really more good then bad - I'm happy I can look at this roster and know most of these guys are gone after this year and our direction is pretty clear cut now. JT, Spence, and KMart are the future of our kings roster and the moves made today pretty much cemented that fact and hopefully Natt got the message we're devoted to YOUTH here (SO PLAY DONTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Sometimes things are so bad that any change is better than nothing. Or so it seems. It's been real hard to root for a team that doesn't have the ability or inclination to stop Ralph Sampson from driving to the basket! But a big part of that weakness is having two backcourt starters (Beno and Kevin) who a) have a hard time staying in front of their man and b) have a habit of leaving 3-point shooters open (again and again). It strikes me that GP, after a flurry of moves, did nothing to help with that deficiency. And if Kevin is untouchable, then we absolutely need players around him who can offset his weakness.

Today's trades are a beginning, not the end goal. Petrie has made room for SEVEN new players for next year. That, in and of itself, is much more than "any change is better than nothing." Yes, we have a defense that resembles swiss cheese. And for right now I'm glad we have it. We do not want to do anything in February that will have a negative impact on the draft pick we've worked so hard to obtain... The time to get real defensive players is after the end of the season, not at the trade deadline IMHO.

It's just act one of what I think will be a three- or even four-act play. We've got to wait for it all to unfold...

Give Petrie credit, he actually blew it up. I'm not a huge fan of Nocioni's contract, but apparently Petrie thinks he can raise his value, and he's usually a solid talent evaluator. So we'll see. Top 5 pick coming in 2009 (plus Houston's first rounder), Martin/Thompson/Hawes already on the roster serving as a solid nucleus to work with.

I think Petrie already offset that with the Nocioni and McCants acquisition. Both players are good defenders and Noc plays the SF and McCants may have some time at PG. But most likely we will observe how McCants develop till the end of the season and re-evaluate.

As I often suggest, we need to get a scrappy SF to pace with Martin(i.e. Artest, Marion, Gdub). But those guys won't come cheaper than Nocioni. Nocioni's decline in Chicago was more likely due to lack of interest with Deng, T. Thomas getting more playing time than him. With Donte still growing, Nocioni can cover Martin's weakness better than Salmons (especially against bigger players).

Sorry but McCants and Noc are not great defenders, they aren't even good defenders. People sometimes mistake gritty, tough play (which is important and often missing on this team) for good D but they are different. McCants is a lazy defender and Noc gambles/helps way too often. He's also a step slow to guard quicker 3's and too small to guard a lot of 4's.

Nocioni is a good man defender, but he gets into a lot of trouble when he tries to help and usually over commits to it. McCants i can't comment on however...

When do all our new players report to us?

Nocioni is a willing banger as defender, but is not always very effective -- there was a study done a few years back where he rated out as the absolute WORST defender at his position in the NBA. I do not know that I entriely believed that, but he's certainly no stopper. Has no real position on defense -- too slow footed as a SF, too small as a PF. He'll lay the hammer on you though, which in lieu of actual competence I have always appreciated as an alternative.

I understand that idea, but we could stand to get 20% better and we'd still have a good shot at one of the two top draft picks. ;)

I understand what you're saying but we need to not win as many more games as possible to at least give some legitimacy to the pain we've all endured this season. If we manage to come up with the 1 or 2 pick, then we can rationalize the angst away with "At least we got a top pick..."

If, on the other hand, we found a way to get 20% better and win even a few more games, we'd end up with a 6-10 pick and in this year's draft there's just no way to ensure whomever we got would even pan out...

Being horrible isn't for the faint of heart but we've come too far to stop now. Pedal to the metal and all that...
