The Company that Donte Greene Keeps...

Kingster

Hall of Famer
Melvin Ely and Lanny Smith. They were the two other DNPs of the Laker game. If you're keeping their company, you better take some strong ammonia salts and wake up, Donte Greene. Otherwise, you're going to just be Melvin Ely or Lanny Smith in a couple of years...

Could be! I'm not sure whats going on, but Donte seems to have fallen quickly out of grace. Either that, or there's a trade in the works that he's a part of and they don't want to risk injury. Hey, maybe Donte and Gerold Green can open a nice Resturant/Bar together.. They can call it something orginal like," Donte's Inferno". Or, "The Green Smile". Or "The Dreams End":o

Might mean that in order to see more min. fm Beno, Sergio and Omri that someone has to sit. Expect to see major minutes from Greene next game along with Ely. If not then message is on the wall for Donte and his maturity and dedication becomes suspect. Ely is to push May. Would expect to see 20+ min from May next game.

From Westphal:

I didn't play (Greene) tonight. That's a fact. We played those other guys. I thought (Casspi) did pretty well. It's not like he's going to shut Kobe down, but he did a respectable job making Kobe take some shots that were tougher than they should have, so it was good."

Is it a strong possibility he gets sent to the D-League? He couldn't possibly be cut?

D league maybe. Too much potential to cut. Guaranteed contract forbids it in Kingsland. Donte is an idiot. He goofs around in warmups. He chucks 3s, or dunks. From his approach to warmups, I would wager that the reason he isn't playing is because he doesn't have the mental preparedness for it, which is his fault completely. Play the kids, you all say. He hasn't earned even playing time imo.

From everything I've heard, Donte Greene is a walking conundrum. He's got potential for days, but has the player acumen of a grapefruit. He really needs to grow up, and he'd better do it quickly or he's going to find himself 40 years old, looking back and wondering why he didn't grab his chance when he had it. To him, this is all still high school. A time for a lot of fun without buckling down and working hard. He simply doesn't get it. He's IN the NBA.

On the bright side, it's better that Greene gets the strong message now, at the beginning of his second year, than next year. I'm totally with Westphal not playing him if he hasn't earned the time in practice. Greene still has time, but the clock is ticking....

Yeah, I know I sort of joked about it, but my hope is that somehow a light goes on in his head. He can be a valuable piece of the rebuild, but its going to require hard work. I know he was in sacramento the whole offseason working with the Kings trainer. But most players ususally go and work out somewhere else where they can have a personal guru work with them. Similar to Martin who goes to the same trainer every year to work on his game.

The reason I say this, is because I believe none of the Kings coaching staff is allowed to work with the players in the offseason, except for the summer league. So while staying in sacramento and working out with the trainer is commendable, I'm not sure it lends itself toward developing his skill set. Once again, I think going to the big man's camp they hold every summer would have helped him a lot. I know that Jason has gone, as just about every notable big in the NBA has at some time.

I hope I'm wrong about all this. I hope he's our secret weapon just waiting to be released on the NBA. But, somehow I doubt it..:)

At this point, Donte should be the first to arrive at the practice facility and the last to leave, with nothing but hard work in between. Some players never seem to understand how hard the truly great players work, on any pro sports team. I'll guarantee no one outworks Kobe or LeBron.

As the great golfer and golf analyist Ken Venturi once said. " Its funny, the more I practice, the luckier I get ".:)

:) Exactly. I have to believe that particular light bulb has not yet come on for young Greene or I'm sure he'd be seeing some court minutes outside of practice.

He is the worst tweener of all. I hate to say it but, he is sounding more and more like douby every time i hear his name. Donte benched, Donte can't rebound, Donte is a 4???!!!, Donte needs more time. It is the saddest of stories, but it is true for more than 1/2 of the men who are drafted by the NBA. He could turn it around...all he needs is 50 lbs and a post move and he is worth 60 million dollars by Petrie's standards.

Well, Westphal told him he's got to work on defensive improvement, because that's likely to be what gets him minutes.

The question is,............

.......is Donte capable of getting the message?

I don't have high hopes for him. He seems to lack that certain "fire" to become a good NBA player. Talent means nothing if you don't have a serious attitude about becoming all you can be as an athlete.

Nice kid but he seems like a mental midget when it comes to his potential in the league(sad to say).

I can't really disagree with anything said so far, but he is only 20 yrs old. Last season was a terrible situation for a rookie to come into with the Theus/Natt era not providing any positives except for the ability to get the #4 pick.

We have a much better coaching staff this year, the atmosphere seems much more upbeat, and Donte is a yr older. Point being, he's in a better situation this yr, and its too early to give up on him. I'm going to take a wait and see approach with Donte this yr, because he now has the recources, and hopefully the motivation(DNP's should be motivating), to start showing some improvement on a consistent basis. If we are having this same conversation in April, and he hasn't "gotten it" yet, he might have to start planning a career overseas.
