Alright, perhaps a little early to be pulling out something like this, but let's go:
Monsters of Rock (1998)
That's right baby, devil's horns and all that! 80's metal! But here's the thing: unlike most random compilation type efforts, this one was almost as consistently strong as some of those greatest hits compilations I've been grabbing:

Other than Cherry Pie, which clearly shows the makers had a sense of humor and allow this to double as a comedy album, its practically a who's who of the best songs of the 80's hair metal scene before GNR arrived and made them all look ridiculous. I have to be in the right mood to listen to this genre anymore, but if I am, I can hardly imagine a better compilation.

I looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove the classics. I'm a big fan of black/white movies and by natural extension (or natural perhaps only in my head lol) of old radio shows. I grew up listening to a station in the bay area that featured radio theater and old radio shows. I missed when that stuff left their rotation by the time I got to high school. But luckily the folks at Radio Spirits picked up the slack. I have several collections, some of which I might bust out in later picks if I can decide on which ones I feel are essentials. This one is an excellent sampling of some of the most famous shows on radio or in some cases some of the best/most famous episodes of a particular show and showcases famous actors and actresses who perfected the art of radio theater. Oh, and by the way...the shows were selected by Walter Cronkite to represent the varied history of the Golden Age of Radio.
Abbott and Costello's "Who's On First is Here" but the marquee event leading off the box is the original broadcast of The Mercury Theater's 1938 broadcast of "War of The Worlds" which is either famous or infamous in the annuals of radio broadcast history.

Scooping up another big 40 song chunk of the 80s one hit wonders and minor bands who you'd never waste an entire greatest hits pick on. And again not a really random scoop. These Razor & Tie guys always had a great feel for the really memorable/defining songs. The Specials -- The Singles Collection (1991) -- I love this collection from top to bottom and it has worked its way into being one of the most played CDs in my regular rotation, but I'm mostly picking it here because "Ghost Town" has been one of my favorite songs for as long as I can remember it it would suck to be stuck on an island for the rest of forever without it.

I like that pick, but a DMB greatest hits collection without "Satellite" is craziness.
Alright two more for me... first up, one I really wanted in the last draft and subbed with a studio album:
Iron Maiden - Live After Death (1985)
This is Maiden at their peak, on the World Slavery Tour, this encompasses the best tunes off their first 5 albums with the seminal lineup of the band. Bruce's voice is a little weak at times, this was a LOOOONG tour, and they recorded the Long Beach dates well into the tour so he's a bit strained. Still one of my favorite live albums ever.
I'll be taking the original double vinyl deluxe gatefold edition.

This is a treasure trove of Johnny's later works with Rick Rubin and American Recordings, released shortly after his death but with Johnny's full input this was no quick cash in. Perhaps the highlight for me was hearing Joe Strummer come in on their cover of Redemption Song. Having lost two of my absolute favorite artists so close to each other was an absolute stunner, and hearing them together for the first time really choked me up. But lots of other great stuff here.

Pick #8, and with another addition to my collection I'll add some Tom Petty. Great great album, certified 10x Platinum and tom Petty's best selling album. Pretty much all inclusive of his hits too. This is another album that everyone knows someone that owns it.
