The Alternate Rules Tropical Island Music Draft Thread - Round 20

Prince - The Hits/The B-Sides (1993)

Kinda glad you took this one, actually. I hadn't decided whether or not I was going to pick compilations for artists/bands I already took in the first album draft, so this collection kept jumping on and off my list.

Alrighty then....

Elton John-To Be Continued - 1990

This was the first box set I ever owned...given to me as a Christmas present since I am a big Elton John fan...this is a solid solid sampling of his best work.

Track List

Depeche_mode_the_best_of.jpg

The best of Depeche Mode- 2006

This was the toughest pick yet since I don't know where everybody is going. There were at least 6 albums being considered for this pick, hopefully it works out.

The Cars - Complete Greatest Hits (2002)

  2. "My Best Friend's Girl"
  3. "Good Times Roll"
  4. "You're All I've Got Tonight"
  5. "Bye Bye Love"
  6. "Moving in Stereo"

  8. "It's All I Can Do"
  9. "Dangerous Type"
  10. "Touch and Go"
  11. "Shake It Up"
  12. "Since You're Gone"
  13. "I'm Not the One"
  14. "You Might Think"
  15. "Drive"
  16. "Magic"
  17. "Hello Again"
  18. "Why Can't I Have You"
  19. "Tonight She Comes"
  20. "You Are the Girl"

John Peel - Right Time Wrong Speed: 1977-1987

Compilation of legendary BBC Radio's DJ John Peel's favorite songs. This dude actually lived through all of the punk/new wave/undeground history and experienced it up close and personal. His show was both a barometer for new and different music and a major milestone for the bands involved. I remember how long before I moved to UK I would hear of Peel Sessions and get tapes of my favorite bands labeled as Peel Sessions. I had no idea until much later that there is actually a man called John Peel and what his role was.

Here is what is on 2 CD's:

Disc: 1 1. What Do I Get - Buzzcocks 2. Alternative Ulster - Stiff Little Fingers 3. Forest - Cure 4. Pssyche - Killing Joke 5. Typical Girls - Slits 6. Another Girl Another Planet - Only Ones 7. Just Like Honey - Jesus & Mary Chain 8. O Superman - Anderson, Laurie 9. Roadrunner - Richman, Jonathan 10. Man Kind - Misty In Roots 11. Can't Stand My Baby - Rezillos 12. In A Rut - Ruts 13. Pasi Pano Pane Zviedzo - Four Brothers (2) 14. New Rose - Damned 15. Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - Jam (1) 16. Sweetest Girl - Scritti Politti 17. Ku Klux Klan - Steel Pulse 18. Where Were You - Mekons (1) 19. Life In A Scotch Sitting Room - Cutler, Ivor Disc: 2 1. Atmosphere - Joy Division 2. Musette And Drums - Cocteau Twins 3. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - Smiths 4. Over The Wall - Echo & The Bunnymen 5. Party Fears Two - Associates (1) 6. Message - Grandmaster Flash 7. Hope (I Wish You'd Believe Me) - Wah (1) 8. Time for some cool:

Booker T. & the MG's -- The Best of Booker T. & the MG's (1968) -- When I was in high school, I came up with this completely goofy idea that the world would be really cool if everyone had their own personal theme music. Imagine it: you walk into a room, all other music and conversation halts, your theme magically starts playing, time to strut. It would be awesome. Well, Booker T. & the MG's would be pretty darn high on my list of potential theme music, and all 16 of the tracks on this album show why -- cool, soulful, funky grooves that make it impossible not to dance. Not crazy, flailing, sweaty dancing, mind you, but rather a subtle cool jerk and a nod of the head. Très hip. Also, I'm a sucker for the Hammond B3. It's one of the very best instruments in then entire world.

Greatest Hits I & II - Queen - 1995

B000000OF6.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Volume 1 remains the greatest selling record of all time in the UK. Combined with volume 2 in 1995, this set became super-awesome. I love it.

Dirty Dancing 20th Anniversary Edition

"Dirty Dancing was a late-'80s phenomenon that will not die. The movie was a smash and the soundtrack was too, spawning several hit singles as well as causing a lot of overdue interest in some great oldies. The Legacy edition of Dirty Dancing is a remastered, resequenced, and redesigned revisitation of the soundtrack and the music from the film. In fact, the disc presents all the songs that appeared in the movie in the order that they appeared and includes a handful of songs from the film's score. The music is a blend of '60s classics like the always wonderful "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "Cry to Me" by Solomon Burke, and "Love Is Strange" by Mickey & Sylvia and emotional '80s tunes from Eric Carmen, Tom Johnston, the film's leading man Patrick Swayze, and of course Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, whose "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" was a mega-hit that was everywhere in the late '80s. The songs from the score are from the dance instruction scenes at the beginning of the movie, and while they aren't much to listen to, they do help the flow of the soundtrack. Anyone who loved the film and the soundtrack will love this disc as well. [The 20th anniversary edition includes all the music from the film, along with a previously unreleased piece of Michael Lloyd's score, "Gazebo Waltz."]"

Very nice selection, but were they released together, or seperately like my cursed Red/Blue Albums?

Together. The "I & II" set was released by Hollywood Records to make up for a not quite complete greatest hits compilation previously released in the US.

Sorry for the delay, meetings all day.

The Misfits - Box Set (1996)
f73925s23i1.jpg

This box set contains the material on Collection (which would have been my original Misfits pick) and Collection II, Legacy of Brutality, Evillive and Earth AD a slew of demo recordings on the third disc and the planned version of Static Age on the 4th. With the exception of the Walk Among Us this is about as thorough a Danzig era Misfits collection that you'll get, and most of the Graves and later era stuff isn't even worth talking about.

The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (1979)
f57183dwslv.jpg

This is one that really pained me in the original draft because most of the tracks here were singles only. But this is pop-punk at its finest, "Ever Fallen in Love?", "What do I Get?", "Orgasm Addict" and another baker's dozen of great tunes. This is witty, smart stuff, and darn well crafted tunes don't let the punk label or the name throw you off.

You did it again. Best punk album in other draft and best punk compilation album in this draft. My hat's off to you.

Luckily this draft allow me to load up on all the great music through compilations so it's not as devastating to my list as the other draft was.

Link Wray -- Rumble! The Best of Link Wray (1993) -- If Booker T. is cool, Link Wray is likely frozen. Though Link may be seen as an obscure pick to many people, his influence on music is monstrous. In his early hits, especially "Rumble" and "Jack the Ripper," Wray used the electric guitar in way no one else had, introducing a heavy, distored sound and essentially inventing the power chord. And, again, it's just friggin' cool music. Dirty, heavy, and, dare I say, sexy. The hippies and surfer boys had plenty to choose from in the 60s, but I'd imagine this is what the real bad kids were groovin' to.

As an aside, the youtube link for "Jack the Ripper" is accompanied by pictures of Bettie Page (which, on its own, is awesome), but they're not all kid friendly.
