The Traveling Wilburys Collection 3LP Box Set - 2007

http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Wil...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1222312555&sr=1-2

Product Description:

This Collectible Audiophile 180g 3LP Box Set features remastered & expanded versions of The Traveling Wilburys two original albums, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 and Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 and a bonus 12" which features a previously unreleased version of "Not Alone Anymore".

The super group, Traveling Wilburys, was comprised of legendary musicians Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty. The album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 was, in 1989, ranked #70 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. The death of band member Roy Orbison (on December 6, 1988) prevented further full collaborations; however, the band continued without him. Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever" is considered by some to be Volume 2, since Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Roy Orbison perform on the album.

Features: Mastered at AcousTech by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI on 180g Vinyl; Actual Linen-Cloth Cover; Three Remastered & Expanded 180g LPs: Volume 1, Volume 3 and Bonus 12"; Collectible 12" x 12" 14-Page Color Book; 36" x 12" Color Poster; 6" x 4" 6-Sepia Color Post Cards and Envelope; Limited Edition - 15,000 copies. Original Movie Soundtrack - Singles - 1992

Singles_Soundtrack.jpg

Good movie, better soundtrack. Has some grunge essentials, including two of my favorite Pearl Jam songs and one of my favorites from The Smashing Pumpkins.

Time for fun. And my first (and, surprisingly, possibly my only) big set.

One Kiss Can Lead to Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found [Various Artists] (2005) -- This 4-disc set is filled with lots of great music (track list with samples linked from draft board) and is just plain fun to listen to. And, typical of Rhino's collections, there are a lot of oddball selections and a ton of diversity -- unknown tracks from big groups, big hits from unknown groups, etc. My only nerdy complaint about this set is that the early hits from Dusty Springfield, Carole King, Cher, Dolly Parton and the like, fun and poppy as they may be, are probably pushing the definition of "girl group," but that is a VERY minor complaint. Lastly, as the picture shows, the packaging is to die for. Not the reason I'm picking this one, of course, but major style points to Rhino for the theme. Each disc is made to look like a powder puff, each jewel case a vintage make-up compact, with mirror, all of which fit with the liner notes in a faux hat box. J'adore.

Yes, good one and on my list as well, but I kind of assumed that you would pick it up grunge-boy. :p

Nice box.

However is it really wise to assure absolutely zero sales from one half of the market out there? (the male half) ;)

Might be an icky stereotype on my part, but I'm guessing that the men interested in a girl group box set would likely be undaunted by its frilly packaging.

Guns 'N Roses - Greatest Hits (2004)

Was wondering if these guys had a greatest hits album, and of course they do (I own all but he last of theirs, so never occurred to me to look). Misses a few things of course, including somewhat unforgiveably their greatest artistic acheivement (and one of the great epic songs in rock history). But it also lines up almost all of their hits, and from one of the best hard rock bands not only of their era (actually the best if you apply that limitation), but maybe any era, this is still a really high value pick.

1. Welcome To The Jungle
2. Sweet Child O' Mine
3. Patience
4. Paradise City
5. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
6. Civil War
7. You Could Be Mine
8. Don't Cry
9. November Rain
10. Live And Let Die
11. Yesterdays
12. Ain't It Fun
13. Since I Don't Have You
14. Sympathy For The Devil

HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book 1- Michael Jackson - 1995

Michael%20Jackson%20-%20HIStory%20-%20Past,%20Present%20&%20Future,%20Book%20I.jpg

I figure I can roll all sorts of Michael Jackson albums into one, plus get some other music I like (Come Together cover, You Are Not Alone and Scream), and stuff that's well, crap (see: much of the rest of Disc 2). Gotta give some to get some ;)

I was unhappy when his greatest hits was taken, but this will work fine.

^^SNAP I would have gone Erykah and that one never ever left my car cd changer...

However...I'm headed back for more guitar, more blues, more live stuff.

Road Tested - Bonnie Raitt - 1995

f64637vslv1.jpg
http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/pop_albums/6/4/v/f64637vslv1.jpg

I missed getting to Bonnie during the other album draft, and this one wouldn't have worked there. Some of her stuff, some fun collaborations and a favorite cover(Burning Down The House).

track list

Been too busy today to address it, but atxrocker timed out earlier this afternoon. I'll let Brick know that he's up, and let atx know that he has until his next pick to make up the missed one.

Given the surprisingly widespread admiration for this band expressed in other drafts, kinda surprised this has not been taken yet:

AC/DC - Box Set (2006)

I have generally been avoiding the box sets as something approaching cheating (they are after all just combinations of a bunch of regularly issued albums), but in attempting to pick up something from this band, there really was no other way to go. For what I can only assume is some sort of quirky belief, I don't think they have ever released a true Greatest Hits album. And since the album I was thinking of that came closest to one is actually included as one of the 17 in this box set, there just was no excuse not to take the whole collection. 166 songs songs, 17 albums spanning 4 decades, more hard classic rock hits than you can shake a stick at. Score! :D

David Bowie - Best Of Bowie - 2002

Any Bowie compilation after 1990 is like a pop-rock music history lesson. Not many artists have moved with time as well as Bowie.

200px-Best_of_bowie.jpg

Considering that my fondness for soundtracks was one of the main reasons for starting this draft, figure it's about time I take one.

151780f1nx0.jpg

Dead Presidents [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (1995)
-- The movie? Meh. The soundtrack? A syringe full of awesome injected directly into your eardrum. James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, etc. And, for the record, Isaac Hayes' version of "Walk on By" is easily one of my very favorite things ever recorded.

Lots to choose from, but I'm going to go with a strange little box set:

The Smashing Pumpkins - The Aeroplane Flies High - 1996

SmashingPumpkins-TheAeroplaneFliesHigh.jpg

Contains expanded versions of the singles from their "Mellon Collie" album plus some rarities and B-sides. Some great covers of Blondie, The Cars, The Cure, Alice Cooper, and Missing Persons. A limited release of 1.5 million are out there...it was only supposed to be 200,000, but there was a huge demand for them and more were released in response. Good stuff in a neat little box.

Good stuff in a neat little box.

Neat little box based on old 45 boxes, which are awesome. My ex had a huge collection of those things, all of which had nifty 1960s op-art designs on them like the one used on this set.

I should have "misplaced" a few of those when we split.

(I don't know why I worry about anyone stealing my picks...) ;)

Now & Forever - Andrew Lloyd Webber

http://www.amazon.com/Andrew-Lloyd-Webber-Now-Forever/dp/B00005R5UJ

On my island, Andrew Lloyd Webber will definitely have a place. This is what one reviewer at Amazon.com has to say about this box set:

This box set could very well be the only Andrew Lloyd Webber collection someone would ever need. (It) contains the highlights of his greatest work performed by the people who (arguably) performed the songs best. Most Lloyd-Webber fans will have the majority of the songs on the first three CDs (with the possible exception of American fans perhaps not having those from The Beautiful Game). However, these all of these tracks have been newly digitally remastered and sound better than ever. There are also other perks for us all-time buffs.

Disc 4 has many famous cover versions and singles, some of which you may already have, but you also get the bonuses on this disc of Kiri Te Kanawa's "The Heart is Slow to Learn" (which was originally going to be part of a sequel to Phantom) and the Metal Philharmonic Orchestra's breathtaking rendition of "A Kiss is A Terrible Thing To Waste" (featuring vocalist "Scarpia"). You will have chills for days after that one.

Finally, there is the famous disc 5! Tracks never before realeased on CD for many of us to enjoy for the first time. This CD takes us back to the roots of ALW's music and lets us taste a few of the early moments of his career. It includes many singles for several well-known artist that didn't quite work out. It even includes the song written by Lloyd-Webber for his 1992 wedding. This is the most treasured disc of the whole set, in my opinion. Of course, this whole set is a treasure (even the extravegant and informative booklet in the box) and I highly reccomend this to anyone with a passion for Lord Lloyd-Webber's music.

Score! :D

Finally...

I was beginning to wonder if I should've entered this draft after all.

With Clash on Broadway off the table and not simply wanting to take its 2004 reissue I needed another source for a career retrospective of my favorite band. This one will do just fine:
The Clash - The Singles (Box Set) (2006)
The-Clash-The-Singles-375140.jpg

This is a bit overkill for the casual fan, because they've reproduced all of the Clash's singles in CD form meaning you get 19 cds of 2-7 tracks apiece. Not a problem when you're on the island with plenty of spare time on your hands.

And next up...
Elvis Presley - The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters (1992)
e24182wh6xm.jpg

While the name is a slight misnomer as there are alternate takes not included here, this collection spanning 5 discs is a pretty thorough review of Elvis's Rock 'n' Roll years, far and away my favorite period of his career.

Pick #10, and I think I need a soundtrack. This one is a classic, full of Motown hits and 60s/70s smooth rock.

Love it...all of it. Don't Stop Believin is one of my all time favorites...VF snagged it in the IPOD draft, so I had to pick it up with this.

Well, you learn something every day. I had no idea that box was based on old 45 boxes. I'm not too young to remember 45's, but I don't recall having any of those boxes around.
