The Alternate Rules Tropical Island Music Draft Thread - Round 20

#1
Welcome, all, to another silly draft thread. I’d imagine that the overall structure/rules of this thing are getting to be old hat around here, but for the sake of clarity I’ll go ahead and post them again.

This draft was inspired largely by S£im’s music draft thread, and will therefore function as its exact opposite in terms of content. As I’ve said before, the very most basic rule when picking an album is that if it was not allowed in the earlier draft, it will be allowed here. I should stress, however, that the converse is also true—albums that were allowed in S£im’s draft, will not be allowed here. Rules are as follows:

  • 20 rounds, serpentine
  • PM the person after you when their pick is up.
  • I am not requiring that a write-up accompany each pick, as I feel it’s sometimes the reason that people put off making their pick, but I do strongly encourage them from all posters—they are, in my opinion, a large reason the other drafts have been so much fun.
  • Content: greatest hits, boxed sets, compilations, tributes, movie soundtracks, import CDs, comedy/spoken word/etc. are all fair game. I want this to be fairly all inclusive, but have a few stipulations:
    • Songs that are released as singles (i.e. the old school single cassettes/CDs that often contained several versions of a particular song) will be allowed as long as you can verify the specific release and/or provide enough information so that I may verify it. But, a single song (i.e. iTunes download) will not be allowed.
    • Import CDs will be allowed as long as, once again, you can provide enough information that I can verify its release (country, year, studio, etc.).
    • Mixtapes and bootlegs are not allowed here, just because I can’t figure a way to fairly allow something like Danger Mouse’s “Grey Album” without also allowing someone’s oddball worn out cassette of Eminem battling in a basement 15 years ago.
    • Multi-disc compilations will be picked as they were released. A 5-disc boxed set that was released all at once can be picked all at once, but a compilation that was released on volume at a time must be picked on volume at a time.
    • Greatest hits collections will be considered unavailable one collection at a time. If someone picks a Milli Vanilli greatest hits collection released in 1998, the Milli Vanilli greatest hits collection released in 2004 is still fair game.
    • Re-released albums will be allowed if the release includes new content not found on the previous version, but not if the re-release included only digital enhancement (for example). If you have any specific questions/challenges with this rule, please contact me—it is mostly in place to ensure that we have few, if any, repeats from the earlier album draft.
  • 24-Hour deadline between drafters (the bookend spots will not get an extra 24 before timing out). After 24 hours, the pick advances to the next person. The person whose pick was skipped may still make their pick at any point until the their next turn—if you miss your 11th round pick, you may make two selections with your next turn, but waiting any longer than that will be considered a forfeit of that 11th pick (the 12th will then be on the clock, meaning you won't lose both at the same time).
  • If you know you will be gone and are likely to miss your turn, you may forward your pick to someone else to post for you. If you aren’t making a list in advance and don’t know what your next pick will be before an absence, it’s also nice to let us know to go ahead and skip you in the thread so that we can move on without waiting.
  • Winner will be determined by a playoff-style series of polls until the board has determined who has the best collection.

Hopefully that should be nice and clear and easy to everyone participating. If there are any questions, in particular regarding content, please let me know. Also, if you have any albums that you’re not quite sure on, I’ve found allmusic.com to be very helpful—if it’s listed on an artist’s discography under “compilations,” assume it’ll be okay; if it’s listed under “main albums,” assume it’ll be ineligible.

I sent everyone a PM to make sure they were still game. Since I’m fairly certain the answers of the two people who didn’t respond, I went ahead and finalized the following draft order based on the original list of ten:

1. Kingzrool
2. Monty’sBiggestFan
3. atxrocker
4. Bricklayer

Allright, let's get this rolling. It is weird that I got the first pick in Slims draft as well. First spot will work for me, it will give me more time between picks.

I let it known in Slims thread that the only reason that I picked Speaking in Tongues was because Stop Making Sense was unnacceptable. It was disqualified because it is from three different live performances on the same tour. Members of P-Funk are present and the musicianship is off the charts. The album spent over two years (118 weeks) on the Billboard 200 chart.

lol...after pm'ing my excitement about participating I promptly forgot to check the thread. Thanks for the pm Kingzrool

Thank you randomizing gods I think lol...

I had an album I was going to lead with, but then I realized that not only did I not draft it in the album thread because I couldn't confirm it was legal there, I can't actually confirm that it's legal here neither....so I'm kinda screwed there until my next pick. So I'm gonna lead with one I knew I couldn't have in the other draft.

24 Nights - Eric Clapton-1991

Big fan of the man with the guitar, and the many forms his artistry takes and him live is all the better. So this is a no brainer. My favoritest of all time is the extended version of relatively recent - compared to when this album was released tbat is..."Old Love" searing riffs, deep blues great vocals.

Here are the tracks...

Disc One

1. Badge (6:51)
2. Running On Faith (6:49)
3. White Room (6:10)
4. Sunshine Of Your Love (9:11)
5. Watch Yourself (5:39)
6. Have You Ever Loved A Woman (6:52)
7. Worried Life Blues (5:28)
8. Hoodoo Man (5:41)

[edit] Disc Two

1. Pretending (7:08)
2. Bad Love (6:25)
3. Old Love (13:01)
4. Wonderful Tonight (9:11)
5. Bell Bottom Blues (6:39)
6. Hard Times (3:45)
7. Edge Of Darkness (6:30)

Okay, wasting too much time trying to think strategically in a draft that is now 3 picks old. So:

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle, Vol. 1: The 20 Greatest Hits (1990)

On this BTW I actually think the compilation was put together in '76, but the CD did not come out until '90. In any case, a greatest hits album that was just that. Susie Q, I Put A Spell on You, Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son, Green River, Down on the Corner, Travelin' Band, Who'll Stop the Rain, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Have You Ever Seen the Rain...and in general just an are you kidding me 20 deep album of instantly recognizable classic rock hits.

Joy Division - Substance - 1988

This is one album I really, really wanted in the album draft but it was not allowable. Now, I have to wait for another music draft that will allow me to pick Gray Album (which would be my no 1 in this draft if it were allowed).

Okay, now for my first pick:

Al Green -- Compact Command Performances (1972) -- This CD is, essentially, the reason this alternate draft was started. As much as I enjoyed the first draft, it absolutely killed me not to be able to add this CD to my list. Especially every time S£im took it upon himself to point out the lack of rhythm in our collective souls. ;) Despite the "14 greatest hits" on the album cover, there are actually only 13 tracks -- this is FAR from a complete Al Green collection, and FAR from the most complete collection available for purchase, but every song is awesome. I've owned this album, in one form or another, for over 15 years, and it remains one of my vary favorites. In fact, if not for the various laws that exist (or, at least, should exist) prohibiting me from ever singing, I'm sure I could sing you the whole CD, with every little moan and shout, and even hum the instruments' parts accurately from memory.

Led Zeppelin - Box Set (1990)

I had to check the rules to see if it was OK to pick a box set like this. The quintessential Zeppelin collection, this set gives you most of what you need in 4 hours, 49 minutes, and 5 seconds. There are so many albums I wanted to pick here, but I think I would be angry at myself if I let this one go. I think it's the only box set I own!

Elvis Presley Story: Candlelite Music Treasury 5-LP boxed set (1977)

Released by RCA in 1977, this special collection contains 60 great Elvis hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s. I ordered this collection by phone after seeing an advertisement on TV. Now for the reason I'm picking it first: I received my copy in the mail on Aug. 16, 1977, the day Elvis died. It was propped up by my front door when I got home from work... And as a bonus, they had included a collection of Gospel music by Elvis.

First pick:

Loud, Fast & Out of Control - Various Artists (Rhino/1999)
This 4-disc box set put together by Rhino is Out of Control. Some of the greatest artists of the 50s available in one package, some favorites like Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry and other gems by lesser known artists like "Love Me" by the Phantom. Mixed in at selective points (usually the end or beginning of each disc) are quotes from preachers and politicians of the era denouncing the menace of this music. Quite an amusing time capsule given that some of these are now practically standards and are considered tame by today's standards.

Apparently this is out of print and now sells for 150-200 bucks.

6. "Pablo Picasso" performed by Burning Sensations – 4:01

When I first started getting into punk, this was one of the entry points, I immediately ran out and bought everything I could find by most of these bands, and it all went to hell from there.

Loud, Fast & Out of Control - Various Artists (Rhino/1999)
I didn't even bother putting this on my list for the later rounds, since I was fairly certain you'd pick it up right away. I heart Rhino.

Repo Man - Various Artists (Soundtrack/1984)
And I haven't listened to this soundtrack in ages (at least not since I still lived with Mom, since she's the one who had it), but anything with several songs by The Plugz gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from me.
