So far I've got plenty of fresh produce, and all the cuisine of Europe. I also need some simpler/local foods when I want something quick.
With my 17th pick, I select:
Comfort Foods
Comfort food is typically inexpensive, uncomplicated, and easy to prepare. Many people turn to comfort food for familiarity, emotional security, or as a special reward. The reasons a dish becomes comfort food are diverse but often include pleasant associations of
childhood. Small children often seem to latch on to a specific food or drink (in a way similar to a
security blanket) and will repeatedly request it in high stress situations. Adults eat comfort food for a sense of continuity.
Favorite home-made comfort foods in the US include meatloaf,
macaroni and cheese,
mashed potatoes (or twice-baked potato),
applesauce,
fried chicken,
chicken noodle soup,
pizza,
peanut butter,
ice cream, and
bacon,
eggs, and
hash browns for breakfast. Many creative mixes of foods have emerged, but probably would be too individualized to be considered authentically accepted comfort foods. Some also would consider
potato chips as comfort food,
as well as anything cooked traditionally at Thanksgiving. Some foreign examples would be fish and chips, dhal and roti, miso soup, chocolate, jevos rancheros, and spagetti. Yum!
My favorite comfort foods have to be a simple bean, cheese and rice burrito, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, blueberries, yogurt and ice cream, mashed potatoes and gravy, buttery corn on the cob, or a nice bowl of New England Clam Chowder. Yum again
