Stein Report on Ty Lawson

Well in a situation like Lawson's, you hope for the best, but you have to be prepared for the worse as well. It worked out last year with Rondo (different situation), so you hope you can strike gold two years in a row. Bottom line is, other than inconvenience, and disappointment, there wasn't much risk on the Kings part. The Kings had a PG of the future problem going into training camp, and they still have one. I doubt they see Lawson as that player regardless of how the season worked out. I'm not writing his obit just yet, but it's not looking good right now.

All have fully guaranteed contracts for this season. That's 14 out of 15. The only way both Lawson and Farmar make the roster is if one of the above is cut or traded without an player coming back or in a 2 for 1 type deal.

I can't see them cutting a rookie. Could they cut McLemore to open a spot for Farmar? Sure but I don't think it's a given that they do.

Now if Lawson has his head on right and isn't cut I AM in favor of seeing if Ben could be dealt for a late first or early second round pick.
 
I think the contest was always between Farmar and Lawson as well. I don't think it was ever considered that both would make the team because of the roster limit.

100% thought we had 13, not 14 guaranteed deals, allowing room for both.

So I'm assuming we don't get an extra roster spot with Collison suspended? Basically to rent Farmar for 8 games?

Collison has to be part of roster for first five games, after that you can add a replacement for next three. This is why everyone assumed Farmar would get cut, i doubt he would agree to plau three games and get cut again. Now it looks likely Lawson is out and Farmar takes the 15th roster spot. We'll find out in the next couple of days, probably tomorrow.

Yeah, jcwkings has it right. Kings don't get an extra roster spot until 5 games into the suspension and so they'all only get help for three games. I don't see Farmar agreeing to that unless he has no other options - including overseas.

I'm really hoping this isn't a major deal with Lawson or that he really did have a good/legitimate excuse.
 
Maybe the team always had Farmar with the advantage considering his history last season with Joerger and Lawsons good play kind of put things in a strange spot? Perhaps Lawson figured it out that Farmar had the inside track and he just decided to bail or something.

That is....optimistic.
 
McLemore could've also been the odd man out and the team planning to cut him if a trade couldn't be found.

After all, Ben, Ty and Jordan are all one one year deals at this point.

Darren, Rudy & Omri too but their spots (barring a trade) are pretty much guaranteed.

Except a trade was found, and we rejected i.

And Jason Jones and later Vlade himself seemed to indicate they were going to clutch that, ahem, "asset" until the ship broke in half and sunk to the bottom of the sea.

Lawson is a very talented player, and this likely was his last chance to redeem himself, so it would be a shame if he blew it because he can't control his addiction to booze. I feel blessed that I don't have an addictive personality. I hope that Lawson has an acceptable excuse for his absence, but one has to wonder why he couldn't at least make a phone call. I have a bad feeling about this. Anyone that's had a friend or a relative that's been addicted is very familiar with this sort of behavior. I pray the reason for his absence is legit.

I have family members that are drug addicts and recovering alcoholics. It's a horrible thing to see up close and personal. I too hope there is a legit reason for his absences but...I doubt it. Yes, I am somewhat jaded. Chalk it up to my experiences in dealing one on one with them. Failing to meet deadlines and appointments, no shows, and excuses are a classic biproduct of drug and alcohol abusers. Assuming his abscences are substance abuse related, until he enters a long term rehab facility to address his issues and completes his 12 steps I am dubious of him staying sober and being a positive long term influence to this team. His sobriety must remain more important to him than anything else and yes that includes the Kings.

That wasn't a trade that either brought back a player that fit or cleared up a roster spot.

Carter-Williams doesn't give the team anything Temple doesn't really and the idea of moving Ben to clear a roster spot to keep both Lawson and Farmar would likely mean dealing Ben for a pick.

Unfortunately things will only get worse for him until he does the steps. The good news is his life can be better than ever if he commits to a new life. I wish him the best.

In all seriousness, this charade of professional athletes (and regular folks alike) sending discreet messages through pictures/phrases that can be interpreted 20 different ways is disheartening. I absolutely agree with you, why can't someone who is in the wrong, and knows he's in the wrong, just admit so, and then we can all move on and/or find a solution to the problem. It wasn't that long ago that this was common practice, but now it's become a rare trait. Don't even get me started on constructive criticism, which has now become the equivalent of an insult. What a time to be alive I guess....

I could tell you some horror stories as well. My concern is more of how he could be a bad influence on some of the younger players on the team. It's one thing to ruin your own life, but it's not uncommon for addicts to take others down with them. It's the worse kind of cancer. If you don't nip it in the bud, it can destroy everything. Look what happened in Portland years ago. The whole team had to be ripped apart. Zero tolerance is zero tolerance. Having said all that, I don't want to put the cart before the horse. I'll wait and see what the verdict is...
