State-of-the-Kings: one fans view

I think we should sign atleast 1 more big man. I mean Kenny is good but only 6'7" we need 3 big men. We have Miller and SAR. Jamal Sampson dosen't look too good if you look at his stats. But we will have to wait and see if he improves.

Actually, Jamal Sampson was good for the Bobcats till he got hurt, take a look at some of his boxscores that are tagged here, bottom post:

I'm intrigued to see what the guy can do for us.

Agreed on needing to sign another big, Skinner/Sampson behind Brad isn't too strong, okay depth at best. Though both can play PF too.

I don't think there's a Kings fan around who wouldn't like to see them sign another big. It's a matter of FINDING the right guy to sign - that's a lot more difficult.

I know three guys who aren't signed anywhere and are decent/solid big men: Vladimir Stepania, Michael Stewart, Zendon Hamilton.

But obviously now with training camp, it's doubtful one would be brought in, or that the Kings would focus on players outside of training camp, aside from probably Barnes. I don't really know the specifics after training camp is over for players.

I think from what has been gathered, Lonnie Jones/Ferguson both are pretty decent big/tall players ;).

I'm not convinced of the "decent/solid big men" description.

Decent, solid big men aren't usually left floating around ...

Having said that, I'm not going to derail the thread into a discussion of who's still available, etc. We have enough other threads for that.

;)

EDIT: To clarify, my response was actually directed at kingsfan916, who said he thought the Kings should sign another big guy.

Well going by what I've seen (not a lot, but still, it's not like they'd be big minute players, but insurance/depth, which is needed) and read on all three, I think they fit that description.

The disappointing thing is that we have had almost all summer to sign a REAL backup big man, at a time when many were still avaialble. This behavior by Geoff has been odd. At this point we seem resigned to just selecting amongst a trio of bigs with little or no NBA pedigree. I am glad to see they are the right type of bigs -- shotblockers. But its kind of an illusion. They will rarely if ever have any opportunities to help us while we are healthy, and hence we STILL are soft in the middle. You can't block a shot from the bench. And they all lack the experience to be depended on if one of our bigs goes down. In fact would not be terribly surprised to see the horror of Corliss at center return before we leaned on one of these guys. And so, it seems increasingly likely that we are going to actually enter the season with one established player over 6'9" on the roster, with one true center who only a few months ago we were talking about possibly moving to PF, with a 6'9" undersized 4/5 as a backup, and with both of those guys very injury prone.

Backup PG looks solid, SG looks deep at least, we're awash in PFs, SF is a bit questionable but there are various people who can play the position a little at least. But to seemingly intentionally leave such an obvious achilles' heel at C is just strange to me.

^^Which almost begs the question: Could Petrie have something up his sleeve?

At first I thought petrie had something up his sleeve, but as time went by I started to realize that he probably tried working out trades that never happened.

Whatever happened with the possibility of trading a newly signed songaila to the wizards for Etan Thomas? I thought that trade was pretty reasonable for both sides.

I just hope we can stay healthy and with a pretty desent backup C(whoever it is), we should be pretty fine.

TDOS is almost over. And even though the season is not til november, I'm happy with at least the training camp starting.

too bad we couldnt get curry.... resigned darius and skinner for curry and a 1st or 2nd rounder would have been sweet......

I think Corliss should go and study Charles Barkley's game.

Corliss is 32 -- bit old for him to be learning new tricks. Had a solid career, but will be slowing down here sooner rather than later. Fact is he was just never cut out to be a great player in the NBA. Super undersized college center who had to try to completely transform his game when he came to the pros and was running into 7 footers all over the place. Already done well just to have carved out a 10+ year career with some nice acheivements along the way. Not at all worried about him suddenly trying to channel a HOFer (and phsyical freak) like Barkley as Nasty heads into his twilight years.

Its really nothing against Corliss, or his game, but I almost think I would prefer to have Matt Barnes on the team instead of him. I like what Barnes brings in that he rebounds well for a SF and he plays good perimeter defense. If he has improved his jumpshot as has been advertised, it would be a near no-brainer. I guess the problem is what to do with Corliss, I know it won't be easy to trade him, and Rick probably likes having him there because he is so dependable. I know he's not great, but you know what you're going to get from him every night. But Barnes seems like more of what we would want as a back-up to Peja.

But Matt Barnes has disappeared off the Kings radar. Why? Hmmm! I agree that it seems better to have Barnes rather than Corliss but Corliss is the wily veteran who isn't called "The Big Nasty" for nothing. But he is not the SF scorer we need.

I think if Barnes is coming, Corliss would still be on the team, or dealt in the season. I wouldn't mind either.

As I understand it the Kings are only planning to keep 13 players on the roster. That would mean they would either have to give up one of the big guys from camp (I don't want to see that happen) or not carry a third PG. I think its been discussed already that Price has a guaranteed contract so it can't be him. So it appears that if Barnes does come Corliss is the odd man out or it really is back to Hobbit Ball.

It probably is anyway, but if one of those big guys makes it then if/when someone goes down I can at least watch a tall guy run out there.

Yeah, so then we shouldn't really be talking about Barnes coming. :P

I like Corliss, not against him being on the team, and he brings good things. But I'd put a few guys ahead of him, in this case, Barnes.

Well, we do have Sampson. Pretty sure he's guranteed as well.

Here's info on them, just to follow-up:

Zendon Hamilton (He's going to Cavs camp for center/big depth comp. now, (along with Obinna Ekezie, who I also like, but is more of a PF at 6'9" 240) but here anyways)
