Some 'Under the Radar' FA's this offseason we wont have to break the bank for..

I really like Birdman...he's definitely bench mob material. But, he's been a key piece off the bench for Denver, so we'll probably have to "break the bank" for him.

I'd also take a look at Brandon Bass, who's undersized, but has been effective off the bench for Dallas.

Not liking much else, either they don't solve any of our problems (Frye, Wilcox, Villanueva), they'll ask for too much $ (Varejao), or they simply suck (McRoberts). Also, backcourt players are in short supply this offseason, which really requires us to draft one or two PG's (since we know what Beno's upside is).

Looking at this year's FA crop, it's clear that - to be a better team - we're going to have to make some trades in addition to drafting well. Otherwise, it'll be the same squad, 2-3 rooks, and the usual Summer League Scrubs that Petrie signs in August.
If your guys going forward are Hawes and Thompson or Griffin, your first big off the bench has to be a tall, defender/rebounder/shot blocker, so Bass would be a very wrong move for us.

We need players that complement each other and cover each others weaknesses. Hawes is not a great rebounder of a shot blocker. JT is not a great shot blocker so your big off the bench has to be a good to great shot blocker and a good to great rebounder and defender.

Someone like Birdman fits the bill beautifully and someone like Bass shouldn't even come into considerations. No disrespect to Bass who is an effective player but he is not a good fit for this team.

We won't look at Birdman mainly due to his issues in the past but that sort of player is exactly what we need if our starting frontcourt is Hawes/Thompson.

Fesenko for 3 mil for 3 years Back up center
i wouldnt mind giving a 2 million 1 year contract on Cedric Simmons i believe he didnt get a fair shot ANYWHERE on showcasing what he has.. he is big and young
then give diogu 4 mil 2 years
you have a rotation of bigs already

Simmons isn't all that big (6' 8.25" in bare feet). His major problem is that he isn't anywhere near any good. I was at a game this year where Simmons was practicing post moves on Jason Hamm during the warm-ups, and despite the fact that Hamm was doing nothing but acting as a 6'4" pylon, Simmons couldn't hit a thing. He was hopeless. From 5 feet away from the basket and less.

$2M on Simmons? No, thank you. Minimum contract? No, thank you. Bus driver? Only if we really need one.

Hamm sounds pretty good. Do you think we could sign him for the league minimum? :)

i think farmar is a restricted free agent. chris brown took all of his minutes after he was done beating up rihanna he was signed by the lakers on a 10 day contract.

farmar would be cool... the worst he could become as a player would be beno....

Yea not really sure what happened there. Unless Farmar decided to not show up to practices how he went to Phil's dog house is anybody's guess. And I'm still trying to figure out how Walton keeps getting playing time.

should i be concerned that the lakers are wasting talent for the future with walton and brown?

Why are we talking about the Lakers? Isn't that the team that shares an arena with the Clippers or something?

or they simply suck (McRoberts).

Quoting this old post for truth...

I can't believe some of the stuff I am reading here. McRoberts is freaking TERRIBLE. I wouldn't even take him in the 2nd round. Just awful. Have you actually seen the guy play? He sees the court pretty well. But he is slow. He has an awful post up game. He can't finish. He is the homeless man's Tyler Hansbrough. If Tyler played for Duke, Duke would be a Top 5 team. Instead, they are not ranked and have lost 5 of 6. Oh my god. I am getting angry even thinking of the Kings drafting McRoberts. Please. Stop reading retarded websites and watch the guy play. If you watch him and think he has a future in the NBA, I have a real nice bridge I could sell you.

There's always two sides of every coin--don't let potential fool you in that fashion. I understand how Farmar may tantalize--he's only 22, he put up decent sixth man numbers last year, he has surprising athleticism for a player his size, but on the other side, he seems to be moody/cocky, has limited passing ability, and can't guard the chair in front of me. I think he's worth the risk--the strengths I listed are too hard to pass up, and I think a new system would help him stay more consistent. But he's probably not as good as you think. Personally, I think his upside is in being a scorer in the mold of Lou Williams, but I don't think he'll quite reach that.

Um..yeah. But assuming all of that I could dissasemble the '95 Bulls in 30 seconds or less too. Suffice it to say all of the above will not be allowed to happen, and the Lakers are hardly going to stand pat and not make any moves in the next 4 years.

My best friends are Lakers fans, so I can explain this one pretty easily.

Farmar plays some of the worst defence in the league. He gambles for steals, gets beated off the dribble and for whatever reason does not hustle to get back into the play. When I was tracking defensive stats this year, it showed, that he was the worst defender on the Lakers. Because of this, you'll see his +/- was only positive when his offence was on. So if he was hitting everything and penetrating well, he could still be effective. However, after he injured his leg, his shooting went downhill.

Along comes Brown who plays better D, makes less dumb decisions on O and actually hit 3s and Farmar lost his time. Next year after a summer of getting his stroke back, Farmar could regain his foothold.

Well, yeah, but could you do that to the 2002 Kings. Oh, wait.....
