Shelden's recent performance

I think Shelden's recent gains in minutes played are of pretty good returns. If Petrie successfully moves Brad and Mikki before trade deadline, he'll be a good enough option from the bench behind Hawes and Thompson. He can actually play well enough with Hawes and Thompson (see Summer League and recent games). And at 4M and just a qualifying offer after a team option(if we pick it up), his contract is still pretty safe.

So I say, his still worth keeping for at least another season.

Shout out to Reef as big man coach. I think his doing some of those little good things on Jason and Shelden.

I am hoping the recent performances might give Petrie a little more confidence in moving our veteran bigs but we already declined to pick up the option year (you have to do it before training camp ends per league rules). He will be a free agent as of June 1. Its extremely unlikely he will be back given our quest for caproom and a major FA, and I suspect his own quest for a situation where he's valued.

Thanks Brick. I forgot to remember we already declined to pick up the option. But I think he'll be staying in the NBA next season if he continues to get increased minutes.

I am pretty sure that at the time the options were declined that Petrie said both Shelden and Douby would be restricted FA in the summer and we can match any offers they get if we want to.

Having said that, I agree with Brick that its highly unlikely that we do bring either of those 2 back.

GP was quoted as saying that we would retain their Bird Rights.

This is somewhat different than restricted free agency (mentioned above). If they were restricted free agents (RFA), we would have the right to match any offered contract, and we would get to keep them. With their Bird Rights we can exceed the salary cap to sign them (up to whatever their max contract is), but they can choose to take an equal or smaller contract elsewhere.

My understanding is that because we did not pick up the 4th year option, neither player will be RFA.

That said, I don't see us offering Douby a contract, and circumstances (trades/draft/Mikki option) will dictate whether we offer one to Shelden. Even if we did, I wouldn't be surprised to see him go elsewhere.

Since we do retain his Bird Rights, I believe there is a cap hold in excess of $4M. So, we'll probably give up his Bird Rights anyways, so as not to limit our cap space.

Even though he is currently our best reserve center, the likelyhood that we resign him is small. Assuming Miller gets traded, we're going to draft another Big in the 1st round, and probably go after another big in the FA market. Now, if we move Miller, Moore, & K9, I can see making Shelden an offer. Then it's depends on what other offers he gets.

Correct his salary is slotted against the cap. But there is no point renouncing it until you actually need it if signing another player. He can still be part of a multi player trade and fill in the salary as needed.

Hopefully the fact that some of us want him at all is enough value for him. I think if we give him minutes he can be a solid back-up, and unless he goes paul milsap on us I think thats the best situation he is going to find...being a young backup on a young rebuilding team. When we are in our prime hopefully he can put up more decent numbers with more decent minutes, i say we give him an extra year. I think his hustle has deserved that at least.

he can backup for the rest of this season. I don't care for him (as a player) enough to worry about getting him back.
