Send Greene to the D League

Kingster

Hall of Famer
What's the point of having him on the roster? He's going to be getting a whole lot of DNPs for the rest of the year, and the minutes he does get will be in garbage time. It makes a lot more sense to have him play major minutes in the D league and get coached on the fundamentals of the game.

What for? The team is already a D-League team and he's getting a solid 14 minutes a game. he''ll probabably stay in his 9-10th man role. I don't think he's going to be behind Sheldon or Kenny in the rotation anytime soon.

I don't know how strong the Kings relationship is with their D-Lg team. Based on the Reno Big Horns roster, it doesn't look like the Kings put much value in D-League experience.

If they had a coach down there who could help Donte continue to improve defensively and keep teaching him how to find quality shots, it would be a great idea to send him there for a few weeks just as a break in the season so he doesn't get bogged down in the monotony of the slow winter months.

Better yet, liquidate veterans until there is ample playing time for Greene on the big club.

If you call not playing 2-3 games at a stretch a solid 14 minutes. We've had a lot of garbage time lately.

Yeah, this is what is bothering me right now. Greene should be getting SOME time every game regardless of how Green he is. I can understand not playing him 25+ minutes. We have a lot of young players and having them play with and learn from veterans makes sense. However, I can't believe that in the middle of a punted season we can't find 10-15 minutes a game for a promising rookie.

It these minutes continue, we should just hire Bajaden and Piksi to coach for the rest of the year. Baja could handle all the minutes and game planning and Piksi to do all of the media interviews and press.

Donte should stay, and get aclimated to the NBA as much as possible, it is where he will be for a decade. He may not play in the big show, but he gets enough shots up at home and in practice to make up for it. Next year, he should be able to defeat Garcia for the 6th man spot.

If that happens I will be quite satisfied with our pick up ...

I just think we need to be patient right now and see what deveolps. If nothing changes by the trade deadline, then sending him to the D league might be a good idea. I like what the Spurs are doing with the D league. They pick players that they think fit the system, sign them to a series of 10 day contracts and send them to the D league. If they don't work out, they cut them and sign another player.

I think it's different with the Spurs because they actually own their D-League team.

LOL totally correct. Even if he were getting 14 minutes EVERY game, that's still not that much time, and a lot of it comes in garbage minutes. Think about 14 minutes in a 38 minute game. That's 7 a half, and a over 3 per quarter. That's not enough to develop, let alone make an impact.

Well, another game, another DNP for Greene. Another reason to send him to the D league. He can improve his game a lot more than sitting on the bench.

The problem I have with sending Greene to the D-League is that he probably won't improve much. Specifically, Greene tries to score the way he knows how - jumpshots. And he doesn't do much else - this was the knock on him during draft day, and he fell to the bottom because of his perceived attitude that he was great and didn't need to improve.

All I can see Greene doing in the D-League is standing out on the perimeter and shooting the ball when he gets it...and while doing that he may score 40 pts a game, it will be in an inefficient manner that would be detrimental to any NBA offense.

He really needs to learn how to penetrate & dribble through traffic, move without the ball, and improve his passing skills & defense. I can't see him making those improvements in the D-League, because he'll be the team's best player/scorer and won't be yanked for poor play.

So add that, plus the fact Geoff prefers that rookies get used to the travel/schedule of an NBA season...Greene may be better off in limited minutes this season. After all, he's a project.

If you say so; I'll take the top-ranked D-League team over the top-ranked college team right now, and give you the points.

Agreed. People need to remember that a good portion of the D-League players have played or will plan in the NBA. Only a very small percentage of college players make it to the NBA.

I think that typically I'm in favor of sending a player to the D-League if they just aren't getting a shot at playing in the NBA games.
For instance, last season when we were severely under-utilizing Spencer, I wouldn't of minded seeing him get sent to the D-League for a bit to help with his game conditioning, work on settling down in the post, and getting used to a pace and physicality greater than what he was used to facing in college.

With that said, I'm not in favor of Donte going to the D-League this season. Primarily, this is for one reason: Chemistry.

I watch how Donte interacts with JT during the games while on the bench, and it looks as if they are developing a good chemistry together. I'm hoping that Donte, JT, and Spencer will be our 3, 4, & 5 of the future, and as such, I want them to spend as much time together as possible. Traveling together, practicing together, winning together, and losing together.

I don't want Donte to leave the team and begin to feel disconnected from our team and the rest of the young guys.

I'm expecting either a trade to free up some room for Donte, or a directive to play him more after the trade-deadline if no trade goes down. With the kind of season we're having, I can't imagine him not getting any minutes for the 2nd half of the season.
