Wallace mentioned again as coming in for an interview in the next couple of days, so have to assume that's a real interest there too. Apparently already interviewed the Golden State underling, but he's a known quantity.
Might have to take a closer look at Wallace's career. The thing is of course that 4 years ago he was considered a joke, laughed at a David Kahn!!!! level. The Big Three featured flubs that got him that rep were trading away Pau Gasol for what were thought to be peanuts; drafting Love and trading him for Mayo (too a while for that to be seen as dumb), and drafting Thabeet (over Evans btw). That's not even mentioning 10 undistinguished years as GM in Boston, which he kicked off by trading Joe Johnson for Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers (a move BTW which I oopsed on myself, not thinking Johnson had much potential -- remember having the discussion with JSin).
Here's the thing though: as it turns out Pau for peanuts turned out to be Pau for Marc Gasol. And Marc Gasol is part of a WCF frontline and the DPOY. The question of course is whether Wallace could really have predicted that or not, but longterm, that deal is no longer unbalanced. Thabeet (who I also missed on) was notoriously the result of some Maloofian interference from owner Michael Heisley. The basketball staff wasn't sold on him. Love for Mayo was no excuses, although as mentioned after their rookie years people were laughing at Minny for that one saying that Memphis actually got the better of it. Dumb people. But still, people.
Meanwhile Wallace put together a rough tough big man oriented defensive crew. Brought in Tony Allen, who I think he had drafted in Boston. Brought in Zach Randolph, which of course could make him a natural fit for making it work with Boogie. The Rudy Gay for Battier steal was done the year before he arrived in Memphis, so that wasn't him. And its not entirely clear if he was the main mover behind drafting Mike Conley -- he took over as GM a few days before that draft. So it was his call, but he may have relied on staff, who knows. There are things that have worked. But its hard to trust one of the few GMs I can think of who has actually traded away three perennial All Star/franchise level players in Johnson, Pau and Love.
