Miller + KT + Douby to Denver for KenMart + Hunter + Atkins + 1st round pick

This would be a size up move for Denver, to compete with the likes of the Lakers and other teams with big frontcourts. Miller gives them a good outside presence to balance their inside frontcourt players.

AI
Smith
Melo
Camby
Miller

With a bench of Kleiza, Nene, Douby. Not bad.

We replace Miller and KT's contracts with one servicable PF with a smaller contract 1 year longer. Plus we land an aging prospect in Hunter and a draft pick.

Beno/Atkins
Martin/Salmons
Artest/Garcia
Martin/Moore
Hawes/Hunter

Plus a couple draft picks. Asking Hawes to start might be a bit much this early in his career. But I don't see what we need to wait for. You can still limit his minutes.

Hmmm... You've actually inticed me with this one. The only value were losing is Miller. I would have to know that K. Martin is healthy. My biggest worry is throwing Hawes to the wolves too soon.

I don't think we could use another K-Mart. Jerry Reynolds would go nuts.

EDIT: And 100x 0 is still zero.

replacing what we percieved was a bad contract for one that was smaller but longer is what got us stuck in this KT mess in the first place.

I think we need to give up on the KT trades. He's probly the worst contract in the league for what he brings to the table. One thing we should also consider... if we do keep him sitting on the bench instead of buying him out he will have some trade value as a rather large expiring at some point. Look what Theo Ratliff helped the Celtics get

I'm pretty sure the prospect of bringing Kenyon Martin to the Kings was exahusted two years ago when the proposal was along the lines of Bonzi (s/t), K9 and filler for K-Mart.

It made some sense at the time to add a quasar PF with a bad contract and worse knees while we still had illusions of competing. But now Kenyon is two years older, his contract and knees are still bad and we should be starting from scratch.

Plus from Denver's perspective, everything I've read has J.R. Smith protrayed as an outcast and problem child in Colorado. I'm not sure they'd want to move him into the starting line-up AND bring on K9's lousy contract and matching attitude, just to replace K-Mart with Miller.

Oh and VF, I believe the plan was to call Kevin "Mini-Mart" once the Big K-Mart arrived :D

Denver could continue to start Carter instead of Smith. Also, Moore could start at center while gradually working Hawes into the lineup.

While I like the other K-Mart, unless he's a piece you want to build the franchise around, this just delays the rebuilding process for another year. Not sure if it's worth it. He would be the best PF on the Kings by far, though.

You bring up a quality point. I think it is about weighing the difference between having an extra prospect or two, or trading for a veteran star.

Personally, I would rather have an extra prospect, but I certainly don't disagree with making a big trade. However, when making a big trade, usually that nice expiring is coupled with some young talent and/or picks. At this point, I think the Kings should be about bringing in as much youth and talent as possible because we just don't have enough to go around. Once we have enough depth, we can make a trade like that and land a key veteran to make a push for the title.

There was a point when I was posting this thread that this thought was just hammering my brain. But being as stubborn as I am, I pushed forward.

I think the key is that on one hand you have Miller/KT/Douby and on the other you have Kenyon/Expirings/1st rounder and the expiring includes Hunter, who is young and talented enough to potentially stick.

Sure you take on an extra year, but you turn (Miller + KT) at ~$19M into one contract ~$14M. Kenyon will actually give you something over those years whereas KT would not. You clear one extra space in the frontcourt and you aren't wasting one.

There is no doubt that if you make this move, that you have to draft a center with one of the two first rounders. But I thought we should do that anyway. For a while now I have been really sold on the idea of Hawes moving to PF. It doesn't have to stick, but at least it would be a good idea while he is still so skinny. I watched him play defense versus PF's and C's and he seems to have much more success with PF's. It isn't hard to imagine.

Ultimately I would like to see us re-sign Beno. If we do that, we don't neccessarily have to draft a PG in this draft (especially if we sign someone like AJ to a 1 year deal too). We can wait until next year to grab a PG and we can focus both (providing we pick up another one) first rounders on our frontcourt. My thought is for us to grab one PF and one C with the two first rounders. For example, Thabeet and Thompson. You get two athletic bigs to seriously change the prospective future of our frontcourt.

Then, over the course of one trade and the draft, you have changed our frontcourt (SF's excluded) from:

Miller, Moore, Hawes, Williams, Thomas, SAR, Thabeet*

to

Martin, Moore, Hawes, Williams, Hunter, SAR, Thabeet*, Thompson*

*for example

In the second example, I would probably release Williams and try real hard to move SAR.
