It's a fact that the Kings have been bad for a long time. Why wouldn't he posture to go to a more established and successful team? Why would he want to go to an unproven small market team in the western conference if he wants to win right now?

Right now, there is really no reason. However, taking a chance and forcing him to come could give him reasons (Kings could offer him the most money; Kings could significantly improve). It's of course a big risk but unfortunately necessary when you are a bad small market team.

We all remember the fiery young point guard who ran the show when the Celtics won the championship in 2008. THAT guy is not coming to Sacramento. If he were still the player he was, there's no way his coming to the small-market team in Sacramento would even be under consideration. He's no longer young and there are big questions about his health and durability. It's clear from his attitude that he THINKS he's still that player, and looks down his nose at the Kings. IF the Kings do the one-year rental and IF he stays healthy, it could result in a few more wins. I don't think that makes it worth doing.

I think your conveniently skippiing the part where Rondo walks at the end of the season. Huge difference between giving up players with a lot of potential for a star that agree's to resign with you, and giving them up for a player that says he doesn't want to resign with you. For better or worse, those young players are the future of the team, and you don't trade them unless you have some sort of guarantee. The Gay trade is not comparable, because we traded players that essentially, were not part of the Kings future, or, were never going to be difference makers. In other words, very little hand wringing took place at their departure.

BTW, those players you are trying to protect (McLemore and/or Stauskas or who ever they are) aren't impact players. They are not as if they are at the same level of DeMarcus Cousins or Tyreke Evan's potential. You can collect all those kind of players forever and your team will still be a mediocre team. And worse, you wait for those players to develop, Cousins becomes impatient, and you end up losing your franchise player too.

Is that how you want things to happen in Sacramento?

While I do think players like McLemore, McCallum, and Stauskas are necessary ingredients to completing a trade for a major player, like a Rondo or a Smith. I don't think you make that deal without some guarantee that the player will resign with you. Nothing worse than having that player walk at the end of the season, and then the player you traded away become a star. And while you may think that the Kings have enough talent to lure Rondo to stay, and I may even agree with that, it really only matters what Rondo thinks. And right now, he doesn't agree with you or me. He's also not the only fish in the pond.

Very defeatist mentality.

When you get Rondo, there is that big chance the Triumvirate of Cousins, Gay, and Rondo makes the playoffs. And who knows, we may even be a contending team depending on how inspired our other players might play with Rondo around. That is what you want to show other star players in the pond - that we have something special going on in Sacramento. It will make the FIRST BIG DIFFERENCE in luring some more big name fish in the pond.

Well, I agree with jdbraver. I'm thinking that our FO will go after Rondo, and they did take a stab at Love. If we could land Rondo, we can release him after the year. Rondo and Gay unsigned could give us 31 million dollars. Yes, 31 million can give us money to acquire us some free agents that would love to play with Cuz and will stay in Sac long term. Let's take a look here, before a rondo trade.

It is not as if we definitely need to save those $$$ or cap space now for a CERTAIN STAR PLAYER who definitely wants to play for the Kings next year. If Rondo and Gay bolts out next year, NO PROBLEMO. Like you said, worse case scenario is we have $31 million dollars to spend next year which is easily discounted by nay sayers. And that is a lot of money we can use to gamble on again for some other star players.

Also, if we cannot show that we can win NOW with another star teamed with Cousins and Gay, we will never get the chance to show other stars that we can win. It will be the same problem of attracting Star players all over again next year.

This is why a one year rental of a star player like Rondo will make a big difference even if it turns out to be indeed a one year rental. It will mean one year of GOOD/WINNING BASKETBALL for us here in Sacramento. A BIG CHANGE in culture. A thousand times better than suffering another losing season as a result of waiting for the unlikely rise to stardom of McLemore, Stauskas (or who ever Bajaden is trying to save this season for that so-called uncertain good future of the Kings).

Never mind that Rondo does not want to play in Sacramento. If he gets traded to us, he would want to play good and he needs to play good. It is the year before another significant contract for him. If he wants to still be a relevant piece in a Championship team, he needs to prove himself worthy. He needs to show he can still play top level basketball.

This is a win-win situation for the Kings.

Rondo plays to prove he still got what it takes to get that max contract next year/play for a Championship team --> Rondo plays good basketball --> Sacramento makes the playoffs with Cousins/Gay/Rondo --> Fans happy even for one year only --> Playoff experience for Cousins and makes Kings players hungry for more.

Boom!

Suddenly we look like a significant, attractive, and truly upcoming and promising team that other star players want to be play for.

It might be 50+ million in space if Cousins rages at the lack of good players on the team + the fact we gave away all our young assets for basically nothing if Rondo bails on us as well. I really don't see anything good coming out of a Rondo deal where we give away picks + all our young assets for a guy who clearly want's to go somewhere to make a superteam like those cowards in Miami did.

Good point and I somehow agree. With Collison and the very promising Ray McCallum, we are set at PGs. What we need is a real shot blocker to anchor the defense and that will balance this team some more.

This is the only logical reason why you would think twice about acquiring Rondo or Bledsoe imo.

Hmmm! You obviously don't know me very well. Those that do, would never call me cautious. Truth is, I would love to have Rondo, but I do think its prudent to weigh the circumstances. I'm not against gambling, and its not a matter of whether the players I mentioned turn out to impact players or not. We don't know at this poiint. The fact is, until something better comes along, they are a few of the building blocks of the team. If Rondo was at least open to the idea of resigning with the Kings, I might be on board depending on the price. But he's stated that he won't resign with the Kings. That has to be a red flag to any GM with half a brain. So we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Actually, I think I only made around three posts, maybe four in this thread, and I have no idea who you are, nor do I care. This isn't a contest, and It's not a personal thing for me. I respect your opinion and I expect you to respect mine. However, I detect a little bit of aggression and condescension your part. I don't know why because I have nothing personal against you. But just so you know, no, I'm not still waiting for JT to blossom. I think the blossoming part is long since done. I agree, but for PDA to get either players in a trade the other team needs to be more motivated for a trade. Celtics are hoping to find a team that Rondo will re-sign with so they can get substantial assets in return, but they prob can wait til feb to find that deal.
SVG as I have said before will only trade Josh for our spare parts If he can convince Monroe to sign long term, and trading Josh is part of the Monroe deal. Since Monroe has til Oct 1 to sign QO , we will know by then if a Josh deal might happen

I agree I think Detroit is in the last stages of denial with reality being they made a huge mistake with signing J. Smith to that huge deal and now having to sell so low that it hurts. Boston on the other hand has all but showed their hand when they picked M. Smart but they have a little more flexibility but not much. I can see then targeting J. Randle and really trying to win this draft.

I don't think Rondo said he wouldn't want to play in Sacramento -- I think he said if you trade me there, I'm not signing an extension deal before the deadline. In other words, he wants to become a free agent. I think there are very few (if any) teams that he would immediately sign an extension with. Those are probably teams that don't need a PG right now. There may be a reason to trade for him anyway, but you're doing so with the knowledge that getting him to come back is probably a long shot in any circumstance. He's going to have other more attractive suitors. So you'd better not give up any players that might be a part of the long-term plan. Probably this means McLemore is off the table, but if we were willing to trade for Love without a guaranteed extension, who knows.

My thinking here though is along the same lines of what bajaden said. I like Rondo, but he's not the only option out there at PG. We haven't seen yet how Ray and Darren will handle the job. You want to go after him next year with cap space and try to sell him on a blossoming franchise with his buddy Rudy on the wing, the best center in the league, and a new arena with sell out crowds to play in front of I think we've got a puncher's chance. It doesn't cost you anything to take a shot at that point. We don't need to go all-in right now though and risk losing a talented young player for nothing.

If a trade were to happen for Rondo getting Smith to Sac would be very important. Cousins, Gay, Rondo, Smith would be a nice team. Forget about maybe Ben becomes a legit starter or Stauskus becomes a good starter, STARS are hard to get. If I was a betting man my money would be on Ben and Nikki never making an All Star team. Both are good players but hard pressed to see either become a star. Rondo is a guaranteed star

I think some of us are looking long term and others are trying to build a team like it's NBA 2k15 and you can hit the reset button if it doesn't work out. If we trade for Rondo and he doesn't stay, we've set the franchise back significantly.

One year of getting the 7th or 8th seed followed by another 5 years of rebuilding is not appealing.
