Manute was rather shy or at least it seemed to me one night at Confetti's Club when he was playing pool pretty much by himself. His teammates (Philly) were at the bar, on the dance floor, or a couple of them on another pool table. I said hello to him and watched how he seemed more out of place than most. Maybe it was his just learning English, his unbelievable height and strikingly skinny frame, that pitch black dark skin or just relative newness to the NBA and this country. A lot of people made fun of him in various ways all related to the list I named or his sometimes unskilled basketball play. Charles Barkley was one who dissed him in my presence on that night actually commenting something off the wall about "dat really dark dude." Manute did not drink but Chuck has a Vodka Collins in his hand. None of the picking on him by anyone was funny nor fair. Manute Bol was truely a gentleman in every sense of the word. RIP Sudanese warrior, humanitarian and peacemaker.

I was so saddened and shocked to hear of Manute Bol's death at 47. My heart goes out first to his family and loved ones. Words are feeble comfort, but know that many all over the world are saddened by his loss.
While there will be many who will mourn his death, what grief there must be in his homeland. They have just lost a man whose love of his country and people was far bigger than his physical stature. They have lost an incredible humanitarian, a champion for Sudan around the world, a great hero forever.
Rest in peace, Manute. In your shortened lifetime, you did lifetimes of good for the home and people you loved above all else.

PTI on ESPN mentioned that Bol is credited with first using the now common expression, "my bad."
Apparently, sometime during his gradual learning English he said it innocently a few times around some NBA players and/or sport writers who picked it up and started using it too.
Also, on same program it was mentioned how as a teenager in Sudan he's said to have killed a lion with a spear
